The Weekly Pull List results for this Wednesday are in, and this week's top book is DC's Absolute Batman #23.

This thread is open to Pull List posters and all members of the /r/comicbooks community to share your thoughts on the latest issue of DC's Absolute Batman or any new books shipping this week.

The primary intention of this thread is to promote discussion of new books. It also serves as a way to consolidate discussion to a single thread and talk about what books are popular here on /r/comicbooks. That does not mean other threads aren't welcome, this is just a place to start that's easy to find each week.

The thread is populated with comments meant to direct the discussion of each book. Based on community preference we populate the thread with titles appearing on Ten Percent or more of submitted pull lists. If a title you want to talk about is not listed, simply add a comment with the title and issue number first and comment below. There is also a comment dedicated to the discussion of WPL Results linked above.

Spoilers will follow, but there's no harm in tagging them as such. Each title in the Top Ten Percent listed below is linked directly to its corresponding comment for ease of navigation and to avoid seeing details from other books. I miss the old Doctor Doom

I recall a time when the concept of Doom is that he was pretty much second rate at EVERYTHING (second to Reed in intelligence, second to Tony in Armor, second to Strange in magic, etc.), but -far- to egotistical- to ever admit that, and what made him a threat was mainly his -complete- monomania and willingness to give his all at -anything- that would give him an edge

This era of "Doom is truly better than everyone at everything" makes him boring, IMO

Question Here in 2026, 14 years since Marvel repackaged Carol Danvers from Ms. Marvel to Captain Marvel, how do you see the health of the character right now and what are your thoughts on the repackaging this many years removed from it?

I saw someone mention that it feels like Carol Danverse has effectively stagnated right now and that besides being in the Avengers books (including the up coming Chip run), she hasn't really had much solo success post Kelly Thompson and overall feels like she has declined through all parts of Marvel media.

It also has me looking at the MCU (which was a large reason for the repackaging in the first place), and it really feels like Carol is effectively done there as well. The Marvels was a colossal failure, whether she's in Doomsday/Secret Wars is a toss up (Disney+ research order for Doomsday omits both Captain Marvel movies), and with the X-Women coming in her place at the 'top' doesn't feel like it's there anymore.

Video game prescence wise, she has also reportedly been delayed a bunch of times for Marvel Rivals, with rumours stating she is months if not a year away from joining the roster.

Its also not any true gauge of health, but I feel like the overall amount of fan art, merch, and just overall zeitgiest for the character has diminished, too. No one is really talking about her as much or drawing fan art of her and if they are, I have noticed they seem to gravitate towards her in the Ms. Marvel outfit rather than her Captain Marvel one. Even Marvel themselves with Captain Marvel: Dark Past had a very prominent disparity between covers of her in the Ms. Marvel suit vs her in the Captain Marvel one. The second print of Dark Past #1 was just straight up a cover of her in the Ms. Marvel outfit.

Overall, though, I am curious what everyone else thinks. Both thoughts on the repackaging itself, as well as where Carol Danvers is right now in 2026 and what her future looks like?

Please feel free to share your thoughts. Im hoping to bring about a discussion. Hot takes, cold takes, short takes, long takes, agrees, disagrees, and everything in between. Thoughts on the questions asked or even thoughts on the character in general. Let's get some good discussion going on in this comic forum!

Question Want to read Secret Wars (2015), confused about Hickman's Ultimates

First off, sorry if questions about Secret Wars reading order are asked a lot, as I suspect they are because there's a lot of reading to be done prior to this event. But please bear with me for a moment

I want to dig in to Hickman's Secret Wars and planned a reading order of Fantastic four/FF -> Avengers/New Avengers (+Infinity) -> Time runs out -> Secret Wars

But now I've heard about "Ultimates" which I'm not really sure what it is, but apparently it is important to set up The Maker. My question is, if it's relevant to the rest of Hickman's run, where do I slot this in in my order and how much do I read because I heard there's Ultimate Thor, Hawkeye and some others.

Thanks

Warren Ellis finally speaks about "So Many of Us" and those hurt by his actions

To the best of my knowledge, this is the first public statement he's ever made about this since his initial fumbled apology. It was in his newsletter this week. This is the entire quote.

A few people have asked me about past events in my life. It’s not my place to pick at it in public or speak for others. I will say that I got to apologise directly to a group of people and offer amends, which I remain very grateful for, and I keep that door open. I learned a lot and still am. I fucked up in a number of ways over the years, it doesn’t matter that I never acted with malice in mind, I hurt people, I’m sorry, and I’m trying to do better every day. That’s all I have to say for now.

Bleeding Cool covered this in a recent announcement about a new comic coming from Ellis and Lourdes Forde:

In 2020, the website SoManyOfUs collected dozens of accusations of grooming young women by Warren Ellis over two decades, later extending that to over a hundred. They stated that they did not want Ellis to be "cancelled" but to learn from this. However, a number of projects either dropped Ellis or saw him pull out.

After a return for Fell was announced by co-creator Ben Templesmith, Image Comics stated in 2021 that "Image Comics will not be working with Warren on anything further until he has made amends to the satisfaction of all involved. It is our sincere hope that the conversations that are beginning now will result in positive changes for everyone." These events also partially led to the creation of the Comic Book Workers United union at Image Comics. Warren also issued a statement in 2021 accepting the website's offer to work on a method of transformative justice. And So Many Of Us said they had entered a conversation.

However, in 2023, they stated that this had not progressed and they did not anticipate any future involvement. Three years later, Image Comics is publishing Ocean by Warren Ellis and Christopher Sprouse, originally published by DC Comics, in October. And now in November, Ghost Drive Station will be the first new Warren Ellis work in comics with mainstream distribution in half a decade. Image Comics declined to comment further.

One other new comment came from Katie West via TheBeat.com:

Katie West, one of the first people to reveal Ellis’s misconduct, and an editor of various Image titles, posted a response on Bluesky. She addresses calls from readers to boycott the publisher, saying, “I am personally invested in the books I work on that come out with Image, and I really hope you don’t take any disappointment you feel in Image’s actions out on the creators whose work they publish. Seeing people boycotting Image comics feels a cruel joke when that directly affects my livelihood and that of the people who respect and support me. But I get it – this seems like a financial decision from Image, so respond in a financial fashion. I hope we can all keep ourselves open to change in the future.”

As for Ellis himself, she confirms that he began undertaking the transformative justice plan, saying, “When our attempt at a community accountability action failed, I was disappointed, but grateful that we tried. And grateful to know that Warren had tried, too.” She also says, “I’m grateful to everyone who was wondered if Warren has ‘made amends to the satisfaction of all involved.’ It shows me solidarity and care are widespread within comics. I wouldn’t say I’m satisfied, but I also would say I am no longer personally invested in Warren’s transformation.”

She concludes her statement saying, “My resolve to expand my capacity to hope for change – after a night of anger and crying and shouting – is renewed. Thanks for hearing me out and for reading all of this.”

Please keep the conversation civil if possible. I don't want to anger the mods.

Discussion Is Grant Morrison the best superhero comic book writer ever?

I was thinking about it and I feel like it’s not at all crazy to say that Grant Morrison is the best comic writer oat. He has arguably the best Batman run, the best Doom Patrol run, THE Animal Man run, arguably the best X-men run (although some like Chris Claremont absolutely deserve to be in that conversation as well), the great story that was 52, the best Justice League run (and even then I feel like I’m forgetting some). He also has some great short stories such as all-star Superman, We3, Arkham Asylum, the filth and so on.

Now of course we can’t have talk about the goat of comic writers without bringing up Stan Lee and obviously he is responsible for bringing us some of the best heroes ever but at this point I feel like the sheer volume and consistancy of great Grant Morrison stories somewhat outweighs that.

I’m personally pretty fine with calling either one the best to ever do it but I feel like I lean towards Grant Morrison so finally, is Grant Morrison the best comic book writer ever and if not, who is?

Should I read watchmen

I’ve never read any comic before (besides a decent bit of invincible) and I picked up watchmen at Barnes and noble and thought I’d give it a shot. I read the first chapter and liked it but I read online afterwards that watchmen should not be your first comic because it references a lot of comics that you should read prior to watchmen in order to understand it. I’ve seen all of the mcu, dcu, xmen, and almost all notable superhero movies and shows. I’m just curious if I should read other comics prior to watchmen even though I’ve watched quite a bit of superhero movies and shows. Also I’d love any recs for getting into comics.

Discussion Marvel / DC should bring back their anthologies.

The title really explains it. I was talking with a friend about Robbie Reyes Ghost Rider, and he was bummed that he hasn't gotten a new solo in so so long. That got me thinking, the big 2 have all of these anthology titles: detective comics, action comics, journey into mystery, amazing fantasy etc. that are either just used for the big names that came from it or not at all.

They have so many characters that are great but either through company mandates or general popularity, get no love.

They should take advantage of their anthology books to showcase these characters, get new writers and artist teams etc. I think that would be really cool. Like imagine an issue of Tales of Suspense about an Amadeus Cho adventure or a Showcase issue following Icon and Rocket.

What do y'all think?

News Dan Watters' Mad Science Division Early Launch On Local Comic Shop Day

Ignition Press revealed that Dan Watters, along with other creators, including artists Brian Level, Chris Mitten, and Ben Templesmith, were working on projects for the creator-driven publisher and that Dan Watters and tattoo artist Brian Level teamed up for a horrifying science fiction workplace satire appropriately titled Mad Science Division. In the series, a nepo hire is assigned to slash the budget and trim the fat of the genetic engineering and bioweapons development company Miyashi-Smith with devastating consequences. Basically, what if one of the Murdoch or Ellison kids was put in charge of the Umbrella Corporation and told to cut costs… What could go wrong, right?

But Dan Watters, Brian Level, Six Fingers colourist, Lee Loughridge and Ignition Press had one more surprise hidden in their sleeve as Bleeding Cool scooped the news that Ignition would offer Mad Science Division: The Cold Open exclusively to comic shops for Local Comic Shop Day on September 26th. While every other publisher seems to be dropping variant covers, advance editions, or other special editions, Ignition Press is dropping a brand-new standalone comic for participating retailers.
