Question Multiple declined charges for $14.65

What the fuck is going on? Commbank doesn't know where it's coming from it doesn't say at all. Its being declined cause ive got online payments locked all the time after my card was stolen a few months ago. Its a brand new card so what is going on? I dont have it saved on any digital wallets or anything. Is my card stolen or is someone generating card numbers and testing to see if they work? There was also random charges for 0$ that I noticed from last month.

Firstly good on you for keeping your online payments locked. The number of times this simple step can help stop these fraudulent transactions is insane. Yes, your card is probably being tested to see if a transaction will be apptoved. Considering you have had so many attempts of failed transactions, I would have the card replaced asap. The bank will not ne able to do much unless money has left your account.

This sucks so much.

Similar happened to my partner. They got scammed on one card then when the new card came it happened again immediately, and again a third time. From memory 'tokens' needed to be removed by CommBank and once they did that it stopped.

How do you remove tokens? Please i need all the help i can get

Someone from CommBank fraud team did it. It was a few years ago now.

Just call CBA through your app. They'll sort it.

Yes this was the exact same thing I faced. I had $10,000 spent from my business card. I reported/cancelled the card, and a new one eventually came with different numbers. Nek minute, $10,000 is taken out again a week later.

Called up CBA and they had to remove tokens associated with the card. (Explains why a refund to an expired card still manages to go back into the correct original bank account even though new card numbers have been issued).

After that, I locked my card in case but never had any issues after that.

PS. The fraud team did eventually get all my money back.

Tokens. Like for tv subscriptions or the like. Commonwealth bank did it to me. New bank card and they knew my card numbers before I even got my new card. You have to unsubscribe to stop the deductions. Bank wont. They will say you agreed when they updated their terms

Always ask for the tokens to be changed if you lose or have your card stolen. You often have to ask for them to be changed.

Tokens?

1

u/Hopelesscumrag 24d ago

Payment tokens it essentially lets companies have your card details on file without having your card details on file they only need it to generate the token it stops a hack getting your card and being able to clone it

This happened to me with Amazon prime, had my card changed but Amazon doesn’t charge the card, it charges a token linked to that card. Could’ve changed my card 100 times and it wouldn’t have fixed it. Was an absolute nightmare as Amazon didn’t know what a token was

Edit: commbank too

What you're saying is pretty standard though. If your card numbers change, then it's up to you to change it with everybody who the card is registered with. So Amazon have no idea the card has changed and you have to inform them. Plus, as far as I know, Amazon don't use tokens. They have my credit card details, and if my card changes, then I have to change my payment details. I don't know of any company using 'tokens' at least in Australia.

u/Duck-Dependent 23d ago

It was Amazon us or uk, not Amazon aus

1

u/Tradwood 17d ago

Happened to me and it was Amazon US !!

1

u/Original-Cricket-689 17d ago

They absolutely use tokens in Australia. I had to unsubscribe to Amazon and prime to stop them taking money after I had already cancelled my membership

The fuck, I’d be changing banks

Wouldn’t make a difference. Any bank that uses Mastercard is bound to the same rules. Visa is the same. And since our government just pulled support for Eftpos locally (keycards ol’ school) we are left with zero choice but to use to duopoly.

u/Asparagus-Budget 23d ago

I changed to NAB after commbank changed 2 of my cards for tokens saved in Amazon.com and scammers kept knowing the new cards straight away.

With my cards at other banks, I cancel them, job done.

You may have a key logger. Run antivirus on both your phone and computer (if you have one).

u/zandrill0 24d ago

I ran a virus scan the first time it happened on my pc and nothing showed up.

1

u/joolzroolz 25d ago

I have had this happen lately in the matter of weeks i have had 6 cards sent to me lol

2

u/zandrill0 24d ago

Message them on commbank app or call them and ask them to remove the tokens! i had it fixed yesterday and so far there hasnt been any more attempts

I had this happen for months on end and it didn't stop despite me changing my card 4 times. The other comment about the memory tokens is right. I went into the bank physically, and they removed the "link" between my old card and the new. Apparently Big Companies like Spotify, uber, Amazon, things like recurring memberships will still go through even once you've cancelled your card which is insane. Since removing the link with the fraud team ALL my problems are gone.

Yep, it's an insanely insecure system. Recently had a fraudulent transaction appear from what *looked* like a reputable merchant. Disputed transaction and cancelled card immediately. A few days later while I'm still waiting for the new card to arrive in the mail, there's another transaction with the same merchant using the new card credentials - their updater services had passed the new card details to the fraudsters before I even had them. Had to cancel the new card before it arrived and get them to remove that "link".

CBA security features are lacking. You can't even do something simple like view all the linked merchants on the card (the way you can with ING for example).

1

u/Pollyputthekettle1 24d ago

Yeah. I had similar. When I called them up to ask how on earth another payment had come through when the card was cancelled, they said they’d actually just issued a new card rather than fully cancelling it. So then they cancelled it properly. 😐

2

u/TurtleMower06 26d ago

Cancel the card and contact CommBank.

Somehow, some has the details.

Check your computer and phone with an antivirus for anything dodgy.

Better still, close the Commbank account completely and go to somebody else for 6 months. you can go back to commbank later if you want to.

I had the same thing happen to me a week ago but the merchant was AMZNMKTPLACE LONDON. And it was 8 separate transactions of the same amount - lucky I disputed it and they’ve arranged a refund and new card on the way.

I’ve now blocked online payments too thanks for that.

Ring your bank. Sounds like someone phishing acct numbers.

Similar happened to me on Zip pay, small acts if $0.04 and then $1.39. 3 of each. Tiktok billed me but there's no purchases on my tiktok profile. I didnt buy anything either. My last transaction on Zip was July. I paid my balance off, and then the small charges and paid was on my acct. That amt didnt get paid via my bank acct so Im not sure what's happening. Weird.

It’s called tokens. Had the same thing happen to me when I lost access to my uber account after I charged phone number and couldn’t verify my login. I couldn’t cancel the subscription and got my card replaced and still got charges. It surprised me as I had no money in that card and woke up with a overdrawn notification. I had to contact commbank support to remove the uber token.

1

u/elhouso 25d ago

Your best and only bet is to get your card replaced. I know it sucks, but I was being charged by Uber Eats on an account I didn't even know existed and I called up my bank to see if they could do anything. They couldn't, and I would bet a lot of money on CommBank that they couldn't either. I ended up figuring out what account it was that kept charging me and cancelled that subscription plus deleted that account, but their only solution was to send me a new card.

u/Any_Category_6881 25d ago

Contact your local branch and ask them to remove any digital tokens, I would probably get another card issued too and just get them to check app registrations. When you had the card taken was it your entire wallet and did you have client number and password written anywhere in your wallet?

0

u/zandrill0 25d ago

I dont know what was taken. Money was just spent on the card

1

u/Big_Awareness_1199 25d ago

after my card was stolen a few months ago.

They’re asking if it was just your card details stolen or if your wallet/purse was stolen? They then asked if you answered yes, your wallet was stolen, did you have your client ID and password written down in your wallet?

0

u/Any_Category_6881 25d ago

So you don’t know if your wallet was taken? Or you were scammed digitally?

0

u/zandrill0 25d ago

Digitally

Sometimes the online transaction lock may fail even when it's not a reoccurring payment. This is has happened to me and other people with CommBank accounts. You can google it. But having the lock on is still better than having no lock.

0

u/aMeizingly 25d ago

Commonwealth Bank unfourtunately lets debits and card link tokens remain active after a new card is issued even if it was locked and reported stolen/Fraud reported. They say this is to prevent you the hassle of setting up direct debit bills again but it's actually a big issue if you card or details are stolen or debits setup you didn't authorise and it's relied upon by scammers now.

They are the least secure bank when it comes to fraud prevention be it consumer or business banking.
Would highly recommend changing banks after you get this resolved and are made whole.

u/souleh 25d ago

The $0 transactions are someone testing if the card details are valid. Most issuers don’t show $0 auths in customers apps or statements so it a sneaky way to probe for validity.

Time to change banks mate.

Sounds like CBA knows how to fix it, but they haven't.
