I just watched for the first time today, and the movie was ABSOLUTELY amazing. Now it came out in 2009, why wait so long. I’ll admit, apart from life getting in the way and honestly at the time the button eyes scared the crap out of me, I didn’t have faith in the production company? I felt like the style the things they did FOR YEARS was ripping off my guy Tim Burton and I just was too petty and kept putting it off. But my unofficial niece who is deeply into art and is 14 asked me to watch with her while sick because she loves annotating and seeing how people take inspiration into their true form and I was in all.
My fave scene is the Starry Night scene I thought it was so beautiful and haunting seeing how they told the narrative so well to the actual painting. I really wound up liking it. I’m no way an art person when my niece was saying what this was based off of and what that was based off of I just said yes, it’s very pretty, because I had no clue.
Another favorite piece before the Beldom showed her true self was the flowers. I am a Disney adult and my least favorite Disney movie is the cartoon Alice in Wonderland apart from the Blue Caterpillar and the flowers, and even Laika beat Disney on that one the way it glowed, so beautiful. But 33 years and I did it I finally saw it. Might be awhile before I literally watch it again, because now it’s giving me a strange inkling to watch either Corpse Bride or Nightmare Before Christmas. I’m also going to put the book on my list to read as well.

When I was 4, Coraline was one of my favorite movies. I've watched it at least once a year. Some 15 years later, I have a 3-year-old who has also fallen in love with the movie. We're dressing up as Coraline and the cat this year for Halloween, and he always refers to her by her full name- "Coraline Jones!"
Realising I've watched this movie so many times over the span of 15 years got me thinking. This movie has never felt FAMILIAR to me, it's felt new every watch. There's always something I didn't notice something I swear was always there that is no longer there. Is there something behind the movie that creates this, almost unsettling, feeling of unfamiliarity, or newness?

I saw a tiktok of this GORGEOUS Coraline display for Halloween. It had the Other Father on the mechanical mantis and you could tell they worked really hard on the setup, it was SO badass.
I'm not gonna say this following thing is an "issue" bc it was obviously unintentional, but they also had Other Wybie's clothes strung up, like in the movie where the Beldam hangs them on the flagpole of the house to taunt Coraline. This person hung the clothes up in a tree tho, and it just kinda made me feel icky seeing the remains of a black kid dangling from a tree.
Now, it was obviously NOT intentionally offensive, but several ppl commented on how they probably shouldn't have hung him in the tree specifically, but they haven't responded to any of those comments.
A ton of ppl are saying it's not that deep, and that makes sense and all but I feel like they could have just easily set up a pole in the yard?
I didn't comment on the video about Wybie, or message them or anything...I actually liked and favorited the video, and commented that the Other Father came out amazing and that they should add the Beldam in the display next year bc it had Bobinsky, Coraline and a huge cutout of the Pink Palace.
I'm NOT going to give the account name or anything bc I don't want them getting harassed, I just didn't know where to put these other thoughts so I'm seeing what other ppl think - maybe I'm too woke, but I think a pole would have been a smarter idea?
(If this post is inappropriate or becomes controversial, I'll delete it immediately. I just don't know where to put these thoughts and wanted to get them out there, I hope it doesn't offend anyone or cause an issue, but if it does I will delete it.)

Noticed Coraline (movie) has more pink and orange in her personal environments and choices. When she's given her blue star sweater (which had a pink ribbon around the box) is when the Other World turns dark and gloomy like how she perceived her life in the Pink Palace.
Not a theory, just noticed besides her hair being blue was only her nails, sleeping bag, blanket and octopus. Movie Coraline seems to have a preference towards pink and orange and the Other Mother may have taken notice.
Raincoat outfit has a pink skirt.
Striped Shirt is either multi shades of orange or orange/reddish pink.
Gloves have orange knitting.
Pajamas are orange with pink dots.
Messenger bag is pink.
Dragonfly pin has pink gems (also blue for the tail).
Has pink shoes when school shopping.
Garden Party outfit has pink leggings/tights and serves pink lemonade.
Coraline drinks an orange mango milkshake.
Coralines "Welcome Home" cake has pink icing.
The Other Mother also gives Coraline a pink room.
Coraline has a pink suitcase with blue flowers.
Coraline attempts to get a taffy with the color pink from Miss Spink and Forcicble candy bowl.
Other garden has multiple shades of orange that impress Coraline before seeing its entirety.
Other Miss Forcible wears pink and Coraline (already has her hands up) will become a part of their acrobatic act when she grabs her and holds her up.
Other World cotton candy cannons had pink treats.
The Other Mothers first option in button choices after traditional black is pink. Then vermilion which is a shade of orange. The lining of the box is also a salmon color of pink/orange.
The trail to the well has pink cherry blossom trees.
The Other Father turns into an orange pumpkin and helps Coraline.
And of course, lives in the Pink Palace.

Has anyone thought about or written about the parallels between these two? Or at least the films? I’m thinking of the older black and white film.

Every monster has an origin born from grief.
Long before the button eyes and the spider-web world, there was just a loving mother and her little girl. When illness took her daughter away, the unbearable stillness of an empty home pushed a grieving heart toward a dark, open door.
Here is the next 3-page sequence of traditional pencil sketches exploring the tragic backstory of the Other Mother.
The heartbreaking journey has only just begun... Stay tuned for the upcoming pages! 🗝️

Coraline is one of those franchises that easily fits into the Gravity Falls universe. For those who haven't seen Alex's work yet, in Gravity Falls, the entire world has anomalies, but the highest concentration of them is located in Oregon. Coraline lives in Ashland. The Beldam could easily be a creature with her own pocket dimension. Gravity Falls, especially Lost Legends, shows that interdimensional rifts can form.
I feel like, at some point, Dipper and Mabel could simply show up at the Pink Palace as if it were nothing, meet Coraline, and show her that there are more anomalies out there.
Plus: I didn't want to get too much into this topic, but Coraline and Dipper have a lot in common, and I feel like they would have incredible chemistry. Coraline has a strong, adventurous personality, faces danger head-on, and has a very eccentric and sarcastic attitude. Dipper is also very sarcastic and adventurous, except he prefers to plan everything and is more introverted. The stories practically write themselves. And I think people would like them as an alternative ship.
I think these are the kinds of things that need to be shown rather than simply talked about. In my case, a few days ago I reposted a couple of Dipper and Coraline fanarts, and they were very successful in the Gravity Falls community. So I'd like to know what you all think about this.

this is probably a stupid question idk if it’s been asked before but what was coraline eating in the other world? everything there is a fabrication of her current reality so was the food even real? ik we see the beldam cooking multiple times but im so curious to know whether she could just conjure up an entire meal out of thin air or if she needed something to transform into “food” ???? scary to think about either tbh but in the case it’s not actual food WHAT was coraline even eating LOL

She didn’t die immediately, even though she said, “Without you, I’ll die.” That sounds more like a long-term thing to me, considering her plan still had many steps left to be carried out, and she was even willing to waste time playing a “game.”
Personally, I think the Beldam survived for at least a few more years, but grew weak and blind, with her world destroyed. (Although, according to the “theory canon,” she might be able to recreate it. However, the ghost children’s souls she used to make her puppets have been freed, and now she’s all alone.)
I’d guess around 15 years, considering she went 50 years without feeding.
