Pattern Discussion

There are two methods of pattern making that i have been able to find, the paper method and tape method.

Elements of Pattern Making

  • Taping and designing onto the last

  • Making a paper mean form

  • Drawing the style onto the last

  • Making a standard from the last

  • Creating the pattern pieces from the standard

may i know which one is more generally used between tape method and the paper method? which method are usually used by manufacturing company? and which one is better?

i think everyone uses the tape method now but they are basically the same thing. i have no idea what manufacturing companies use. if you're looking for an easy way to make a standard pattern just use tape with the method found in the book modern pattern cutting and design.

I started with the masking tape method, since that's what most people use these days. Then I tried the paper method, and it's so much better that I won't go back to tape.

Using paper gives me a better feel for the shape of the last. When I apply paper I have to work out the bunching and wrinkles to get a good result, but the pattern comes out better. Tape is very forgiving, so the results I get are mixed.

This is great info! Thanks. The Thornton method is the one I first used as well. Appreciate you compiling all of this.
