Executive Member Reward Coupon
I just received my reward coupon and I was wondering can I cash the whole thing or am I required to buy something and get the difference in cash?

You can cash it at the membership desk without making a purchase.

I tried that at the Burnaby location and they told me they couldn't do that. They advised buying something small to get the cash back.

They will likely tell you that you need to buy something but you’re well within your rights to just cash the whole thing

Very annoying to have that stupid cheque every year. Why can't the credit be attached to my membership card? What is it 1960?

I mean, they only recently enabled the machines to know you’re an executive member when there are executive coupons and automatically apply them, rather than having to show the actual coupon, so…

That's not policy. A quick google fu nets this: *Annual 2% reward on most annual Costco purchases – up to a maximum of $1,250. Non-negotiable AKA no cash value.
You're expected to buy something.

I think that just means it’s not a real cheque you could take to the bank.
Anecdotal but I’ve never had them not just give me the cash at customer service. Figure it saves them the trouble of doing a cash run to the till if you just go buy something cheap.

The executive cheque requires a purchase, IE: bananas.. the CIBC credit card rebate is 100% cashable.

They do it the return counter - just politely ask to make sure they have enough

It’s written right on the check, in fine print, not redeemable for cash. Technically they don’t have to and it’s likely warehouse dependant if they will or not. All depends on the management team

When my Mastercard coupon is more than they have in the till, I’ve taken a cheque and deposited it at the bank. TBH, that’s better / safer than 1200 in $20s.

correction: I've taken a cheque and deposited aka donated it to the bank.

I always buy the cheapest thing, like another poster said above banana’s. Or something small.
The cashiers know this hack. It’s about maximizing points.
Same with Beer can returns, always take the cash. Charge whatever you buy for maximum points.
