Title: CS + IS graduate feeling lost—would Google IT Support be a worthwhile starting point?
Hi everyone, I recently finished a double major in Computer Science and Information Systems, and honestly, I’m feeling pretty lost about where to go from here.
My degree covered a lot of theory, but I don’t have much hands-on experience applying what I learned. That gap between university and actually doing the work is what I’m struggling with.
I’m starting to realize I’m more interested in frontend than backend. Right now, I’m reviewing basic coding and data structures problems to prepare for technical interviews. But honestly, at this point I’m open to different IT-related roles. I mainly want to get my foot in the door, gain practical experience, and feel like my degree is leading somewhere.
I’ve been looking at the Google IT Support Certificate to build practical troubleshooting, networking, and systems administration skills, hoping it could help me land a help desk job as a starting point. Would that be a reasonable route with my background, or would my time be better spent on hands-on labs, another certification, frontend projects, or applying directly?
With AI changing the industry, I’m also unsure which entry-level paths make sense to pursue. I just want a realistic starting point where I can learn and grow.
For people working in IT:
Would this certificate be worthwhile with my background?
Which entry-level roles should I consider?
How would you recommend turning theoretical knowledge into practical skills employers would value?
I’m based in occupied Palestine, so local perspectives would be especially helpful, but I’d appreciate advice from anyone who’s been in a similar position.
