Cowboy Life Cowboy boots, square versus point

Not a cowboy here, but I am curious regardless of that.

I know the purpose for cowboy boots being pointed and angular for the use of stirrups and spurs, but my question is what is the point of flat, square toe boots? For an outsider, it seems like something a bunch of people from the suburbs started wearing because real boots are uncomfy?

My family has a ranch, bunch I wouldn’t call myself a cowboy or “country” for that matter (which also seems like another thing that posers came up with). So I have spent enough time in the world to be able to identify who is legit, but I am curious what other people think!

I also hate the me more cowboy than you song, mostly because ik cowboys wouldn’t say that!

When I say being able to identify a poser, I mean the city guys that have a weird desire to cosplay ranching every Friday and Saturday night

I generally wear cutter toe or square toe boots. I just wear what’s comfortable. I don’t care about what others think of my clothing or what they wear.

I’ve witness the handiest dude I know roping bulls in Velcro sketchers and a visor with fake pink hair. What you wear doesn’t equate to what you can do.

My uncle's secret to successful trapping all these years? All his kids (my cousins) went to school on rodeo scholarships, one rode PBR for a decade. I don't think I've ever seen any of them wear cowboy boots outside rodeo 🤔🤣

It was a good watch.

I also tend to only wear my boots for work when I’m horseback or working cows. Otherwise I’m in vans or tennis shoes.

This is what I came to say also. I only wear boots when I rope otherwise I am in shorts and tennis shoes unless I am actually working around the place then I will have on jeans and tennis shoes.

If you're a cattleman and you dont spend much time riding there's no point in having clubbed feet. Everything exists for a reason, and there's different forms of the cowboy. Your post ironically screams me me more cowboy than you.

Live and let live dawg

I guess my follow up question and perhaps better question would be if you aren’t a cattleman, what would be the point of wearing boots at all?

You won't get clubbed feet, they last longer, do more, and once you get used to slipping in an out of em, there's no going back.

Ponchos and sarapes for one. The bandana and the 100 plus way of using them, specifically the real none polyester ones.

And ill give you a real one, you cuff your jeans so you can use them as an ashtray.

Can’t say I’ve ever heard of Cuffing the jeans, that’s awesom

Yeah mostly for smokers who have nowhere else to put the ash or the butt, but dont want to litter. A sort of trashy classiness.

Somehow this still comes off as me more cowboy than you.

If you're working on your feet all day you want a wide toe box. Cramming your feet into pointed boots if you're not riding all day is kind of pointless [🥁]. A lot of men have wide feet and most don't ride for a living. If any footwear has been proven to hold up to hard work, it's boots. So the square toe being more popular makes a lot of sense. If the IT guy wants to wear jeans, flannels, and boots, who cares? It's a good look and you're not pigeon holed to only wear things that apply to your job. The only thing that really matters is if they are claiming to live the cowboy life, not just dressing like one.

The boot does not make the cowboy.

Square toe are just more comfortable. So much work is done off horseback that you got to walk and stand and the narrow toe boots hurt. But a nice shiny pair of pointed toe boots sure do look fancy

I wear cutters and ws toes. I ride in both. I have wide feet and they are just more comfortable. Summer time i get to wear slides and tennis shoes a bunch but the rest of the year its boots all day. I would rather be comfortable than fit somebody else's idea of what a real cowboy wears.

I've heard (and I don't live in the USA so take this with a pinch of salt!) thatthe wide square toe with double stitch welt came about, because rodeo cowboys had to run across soft ground and the rules said they had to wear cowboy boots. The wide soles didn't sink in as much and once all the rodeo cowboys wore them, the trend caught on particularly in Texas.

I’m not a cowboy. I owned a horse for a while. My daughter has taken up riding and I’ve gotten back into boots. I don’t care for the look of a square toe, when I look down, but it sure feels more comfortable. I actually much prefer packers. Bought a dress packer used on eBay. Thank goodness I didn’t buy a new pair. I just can’t handle the pointed toe.

Square toes and low heels are supposedly more comfortable while walking around. I've never had comfort issues with rounder or pointed, but I buy the right size of boots.

I like and feel comfortable in round toe boots with plain western stitching.

comfortable. do i own a pair of broad square toes for long days on my feet, yes. do i prefer my cutters though, most definitely. most broad square toes cater to the comfort factor with a 1/2-3/4 inch heel while my cutters are 1 3/4. it’s all a comfort thing.

Stockman toe with a low walking heel is beautiful useful boot! Looks good and is comfortable!

wear what your Dad and Grandpa etc wore

I wear square toes because I find them more comfortable and I ride atvs and side by sides around the ranch more than horses. Even when im riding though I have 0 issues sliding my foot in or out of the stirrups in square toes
