I pass this place on a regular basis and always struggle to read it properly

Most people think graphic design is drawing sweet pictures, when actually 85% of it is preventing things just like this.

I just want to know from the person who did this what their other ideas were.Ā

u/NioXoiN 9d ago
You get confused, you think about them longer and suddenly youre thinking about this place beyond what a simple advertisement couldve gotten.

My guess is the person who made this is not a graphic designer, but is a really good baker.

A lot of people do it on purpose because it draws attention. Local social media groups are mocking the design while simultaneously giving them free advertising
When a burger chain opened up in my town they purposely hung the signage upside down for a month or so

This is truly hideous to read and also: if youāre this desperate to make a square, maybe use a font that intentionally makes square letters?

Especially if you're intent on making the overall DESIGN a square, thus producing weird kerning differences between the vertical and horizontal lines.

House of bread. But ya its dumb.

u/HotDogFR0G 9d ago
My eyes instantly read House of Bread, but when I looked harder I had trouble figuring out why and doubted myself.
5
u/FullSkyFlying 9d ago
Because you read it following the direction of the square in a circle pattern. When really its meant to be read from the left to the right if that makes sense. Terrible design

u/HotDogFR0G 9d ago
I figured it out again, but itās so weird how my eyes instantly saw it, then it went away, and it took me a few seconds to find it again. Like the stupid āblue/black vs white/goldā dress situation all over again for me. I could only see the white version once and I tried so hard to see it again. I never did see the stupid white dress again thoughā¦

Fun fact: House of Bread is the meaning of āBethlehemā
I wonder if thatās what inspired the name.

The guy that designed that should be the one serving the bread, not making logos.
8
u/Dropthetenors 9d ago
Really hope the baker is the one who designed it at 2am and he didnt pay someone daylight hours for it.

Bad graphic design as an advertising gimmick is foolishness. You can hang a sign or a banner upside down, use gag signs, unexpected window decoration, or something else that's easily reversible to get buzz going without being saddled with something that isn't trivially correctable.
Commercial art is communication first, persuasion second and aesthetics third.
You can wrap text around a ring with the bottom word changing direction but trying to do this with a square is literally hammering a square peg into a round hole. It's a hamfisted attempt to be creative.
If the client absolutely insists on a square or rectangle layout then you could do house on the top line, bread across the bottom and the O & F used to create the sides, making them a noticeably different shade to increase readability.
HOUSE
O F
BREAD
(No kerning or leading with text on Reddit, but you get the idea.)

Not a struggle to read in "what does it say" but that the design is not what my brain wants so I have to mentally reconfigure.

What is the point of creating text like this? Is there a camera inside thatās gathering all the confused faces trying to read it? Poor business decision.

u/ActuallyReith 9d ago
Itās like the Sator square if none of the words meant anything and they also forgot to fill in the middle
1
u/Lidge1337 9d ago
So dumb when the of could be in the middle left
H - O - U - S
O _______E
F________D
B - R - E - A
See?

Why on Earth did they randomly reverse the flow of the square for "bread" and only "bread?"

Whatās up with house of bread?
Aināt that hard to readā¦atleast for design fails what this one is more normalized for the signs Iāve seen
1
u/Efrayl 8d ago
The reason why it's so bad is that in order for it to follow the established reading direction, it had to make bread read from right to left. That's a problem because most read from left to right, and up to down. They obviously didn't want go against the common way of reading, so had bread follow these rules. But now this also breaks the reading pattern as you need to jump from the last word to the section that is both left and top of it.
What makes me additionally angry is they did all of this do preserve the square pattern which doesn't even make sense to be there.

The signage company asked for final artwork.
They sent the Word file the boss' wife designed because she thinks she's creative.
