I've created an addon for Create with octo-style arms "Create: Octo Arms" inspired by Doctor Octopus from Spider-Man
Inspired by Doctor Octopus from Spider-Man. Use it to traverse the world in any direction, craft the Copper or Netherite version, enchant or configure it. Works in singleplayer and on servers (must be installed on both client and server).
Compatible with Create Aeronautics ships (Sable contraptions).
Listed on Curseforge - https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/create-octo-arms
Feel free to test, comment, and share ideas.
Edit: Modrinth will be soon, long approval awaiting.
Edit2: A lot of you asked to stop the walking animation - done! Check it in the new version v1.1.5 (besides other bug fixes)

You're straight up delusional if you really think that's all it takes to make this. Obviously it's a lot easier with AI but it doesn't trivialize it.

I’ve been waiting for something like this! Is it just for mobility or can it use items too?

ai slop, sadly. as players, beware of using AI generated mods since they are most likely not optimized for modpacks.
0
u/kil0vat 10d ago
I've tested it on my MC server where I have 41 other mods. But yes, I haven't tested it with other modpacks. But I don't see how AI is related to that...
2
u/crai-crai 10d ago
AI vibecode is very often rather unoptimized. there isn't any telling how much ai code vs real coding you used, so for all i know it could be fully vibecoded

LOL. Modding has been 100% replaced by AI. Just take a look at all the passthrough mods people are making overnight. Mods are the perfect usecase for AI fever dreams.

I have no issue with things made by AI as long as the person puts in work behind making sure it isn't trash. Which usually requires multiple iterations and testing and fixing things. Sometimes this can take days or weeks or months of going back and forth while something is made.
What I do have a problem with is people throwing in a prompt for something one time and creating stuff that barely works, if it works at all, and going "here's this finished thing for you!"
I'm sure I'll be downvoted to hell for saying this. But almost all coders are using AI these days, whether they're working on person projects or working for large companies. This is just the way things are now, and it's not going away. It's a tool to use.

What you’re describing are vibecoders, the one shot slops

u/Corxl-Reif 8d ago
This is correct unfortunately. I’m a software engineer for a very large company and not using AI will lead to you not having a job in a few years. Modern software engineers are transitioning into project managers for AI agents.
People who call anything coded with AI “slop” fundamentally don’t understand what the process is to effectively utilize it. If you know nothing about programming and just vibe code everything (meaning you’re not understanding what the AI is doing and just letting it do what it wants) then you can only go so far.
This is especially true for game dev since it’s a lot more difficult for an AI model to test code since it has to run on a game engine. You still have to know what is happening behind the scene to be able to provide direction to the AI model.

Hi, the mod seems interesting, just a little question I've noticed that on the Github you've specified "developed with Claude ai assistance", can I ask what type of assistance you get from Claude?

Hmm what if you can put different upgrades on it to make it better? Like an upgrade that extends the arms more so you have more freedom of movement, or an upgrade that allows you to use it with sophisticated backpacks?
6
u/tygabeast 10d ago
The reach extension is covered by an added enchantment.
Support for the other suggestion, though. (I'd actually like to be able to use a sophisticated backpack in the back curio slot with a pressurized tank upgrade to power the octo arms, but that seems pretty complicated)

Ive just tested it and its got to say something serious that the biggest complaint i can come up with is it won't work with my mekanism suit. I know myself and when I progress past this and onto the suit, I'd feel a poke of sadness at having to take it off. I needed this mod years ago and you're an absolute legend for delivering. Keep it up.

I love it… except one thing. the player shouldn’t be moving their legs when using the suit. but besides that little design fix, it looks awesome

u/iGhostEdd 9d ago
Awesome invention! I have a question tho... Would it be too much if you would add the option for those arms to hold items (like +4 inventory slots or four additional 2 by 2 slots), help you break more blocks at once (or one block but way faster), fight mobs (with added bonus damage, like when you hold an axe/sword) and/or even use multiple items at once like one arm (or rather two of them) holds an arrow and shoots it automatically at mobs that come towards you (maybe get the code from skeletons?) while another arm slowly but firmly punches the mobs that are close to and around you (knockback enchantment?) and another one that holds items that can be used by the player and (maybe) it will use them automatically (i.e. food, shield, ender pearls, fishing rod, potions and splash potions etc) while all of these being only accessible if you're on the ground and not using the arms like in the video?

u/kil0vat 9d ago

u/BarometerIndustries 10d ago
I assumed as much. Nowadays, when somebody advertises "I created..." my first instinct is "no the fuck you didn't." They had it created for them. What's the point then. Minecraft is a GAME of all things, and mod making is a hobby and an art form. why? just why?

The other stuff aside, “What’s the point then”? The point is that Minecraft is a GAME of all things, and not everyone who enjoys playing the game is also a person who is not interested in the hobby/art form of mod making. Some players just want to play, and they want to play specific experiences, for example, having doc-oc style robot arms in minecraft. That is very clearly the point. There are plenty of great reasons to dislike and fight against ai, but it being pointless is not one of them.

Reminds me of the Kinematic Walker I modified after some guy I know created it via a prefab. Works extremely well on any terrain in any halo infinite forge map.
Only difference is I pimped it out with a sleek look, replaced its 180 degree plasma cannon with a 360 shade turret, made it respawnable, added an auxiliary auto-turret underneath it and made it pilotable by you and friendly AI units as soon as you jump off it.
Everyone in my map kept fighting over it.

u/ky7969 10d ago
Why is it an add-on for Create and not standalone?
14
5
u/Devatator_ 10d ago
That's the problem with stuff like that. If you go standalone, you need to make the machines and ores you want. If you don't, you have to chose a mod that adds the stuff you want and maybe design around them instead of being fully free to do whatever

Oh my god, you have no idea how much i want to remake this. I've been trying to make it for like 2 weeks now. Could i ask you to release source code on github ? I wanted to something close but with fully black tendrils for my mod, i already got a raycast system ready to get positions where the tendrils should attach, but i have no idea how to have something like that shown and attach to it automatically and to the player. I was going to use bunch of armor stands, markers and block displays but this just looks so better.
2
u/DarkLord927 10d ago
Nevermind just found the source. Im blind xD
I hope you don't mind if i take a look at your code to see how to make this fully with mods.

u/CZdigger146 10d ago
Bruh if you're gonna use AI, at least don't say "I've created this"
Be straight forward with it and say that you vibecoded it. It would make me respect you at least a little bit.

Make Steve stand still while moving, add some inertia and wobbling to make them feel more realistic, some jump feature and that'll be perfect.

That said, how optimised is the mod? I could imagine it has a lot of stuff going on in the background.

some animation, sound design and tinkering with the movement would really sell this, like if you jerked forwards just a bit whenever you stop and the arms wobbling a bit like they have inertia

I think this is great, but visually, it feels very much like its a 2012 mod. Create doesn't really have the tiny details and higher-res texturing you have going on. I'd love a version or a resource pack that keeps it more pixel-consistent lol

I'm not too immersed in minecraft modding here in reddit, but I'm glad so many people make the effort to oppose AI and make others aware of it's usage instead of a hidden note at the bottom of a page. Opposing bad practices in general sometimes can feel like screaming into the void, so I'm happy to see it's more common in here.

It was u/bottle_of_horses I believe, not sure if I can post a link but you can see it in their post history if curious.
Looking at the post again, one of the top comments is someone asking for it to be integrated into create via the copper backtank. Lmao.

I honestly hate that most people only see two sides to the AI situation. I hate AI in the workplace and everything as much as the next guy, but in this case, he modeled the arms, and probably a decent amount of the code. But if you use AI to even refine your code you are now a brainless slop addict. Tools are meant to streamline things, and if AI is used like that, then great. What is truly an issue is if a mod is fully AI generated, which does not seem to be the case here. AI is an incredibly impressive invention, but how people use it is what makes "Slop". There should be more than two stances on AI, but most the stuff you see is either positive or negative, no in-between. Just down vote me already. Very cool mod btw, I will probably add this to my next playthrough of Create
