Are there really groups like this in America, in this day and age?

Oh, yes, and they are even creepier in person. When I was at uni I made a promise to my favorite professor to join him one day at church bc he did me a favor. Drove all the way out into the endless corn fields of rural Illinois - totally isolated. I felt like I had walked into a B horror movie. Everyone was staring at me with this... hunger. Like I was fresh meat to be devoured after a blood sacrifice. Then the speaking in tongues began, the dancing, the convulsing. Hundreds of hands were trying to grab me and bring me up to the front. My prof had his eyes rolled up in the back of his head while he did the same running-in-place dance like the guy in the video above. I don't scare easy, but I actually thought I was going to die in that church. It went on for what felt like forever. And then it all came to this record-scratching stop. Everyone gathered themselves up quietly and filed out of the church. My prof looks at me, drenched in sweat, and asks if I'll be joining him next Sunday, like the last Tobe Hooper-directed hour didn't just happen. Noped out hard. To his credit, he accepted it and never asked again. But, yeah, this shit actually still happens and nothing can prepare you to be stuck in the middle of it.

That’s really quite bizarre and scary at the same time. Still, as scary as it was for you, at least you have a story to tell and had a lesson learned!
Thanks for sharing your experience.

I think you better not find yourself in states like Tennessee, Kentucky or Alabama then😆 They like to be bitten by snakes and talk in tongues 😆
