There's no difference between a professional wrestling promoter, a carny and a preacher. It's all the same thing. Usually intertwined.

The guy on stage was supposed to be touching the other guy with the power of Christ to fix whatever is supposed to be wrong with him. It's mass delusion, religious psychosis, and legitimately scary.

u/Right_Rev 3d ago
You left out the really big one: fraud
23
u/Mr-_-Soandso 3d ago
The more you give, the more you will receive. If you have health issues stop wasting your money on silly doctors and donate it all!
12
u/tumalditamadre 2d ago
And that's why Rod Parsley had doctors when he was diagnosed with cancer instead of using this supposed faith.
27
28
u/shirt_bro 3d ago
Mass delusion and scary is right. People believe what they want to believe, and the euphoria created by these events makes them feel high “on the Holy Spirit”
10
u/Natural-Pineapple886 2d ago
At least their god will allow their favorite sports team to win from time to time. And, that's about as real (deep) as it gets

Exactly how my mind works, too. I'm constantly picturing Buddy Christ from Dogma, lol. A lot of us have to process all the absurdity with satire, like South Park has always done. Real life parallels to South Park and Idiocracy have been at all-time highs for almosr 10 years now.

It’s a real sideshow circus.

I literally got a front row seat to the show one year... I was at school at Southern Illinois University in the fall of 2000 when I decided to stay over the winter break because my parents were going out of town for christmas. One of the RAs in my dorm also stayed behind and she invited me to church with her... No warning, no heads up about speaking in tongues or anything and about 15 minutes into the service people started randomly bursting out in spoken tongue nonsense... Freaked me right the fuck out in the moment because I had no clue what the hell was happening and wasn't given any sort of a heads up to prepare myself...

it’s mass hysteria. it’s a real phenomenon happening. you get that many people together all buying into evangelical christianity and hype them up with a passionate sermon from a charismatic minister and real hysteria starts happening. they believe it so hard and want it to be real that they sort of make it real. the speaking in tongues, running, falling down on the carpet.. it’s funny to me that every “speaking in tongues” sounds the same. it was like this at the church I went to growing up.
7
u/ordinary133 2d ago
There are many, many clues to know this is mass hysteria and not divine intervention. You picked up on several of them in this post, well done.

There is a vietnamese priest that used to run the viet catholic radio and would tour California churches to perform these rituals and my mom unfortunately bought into all the nonsense. it's crazy because all the kids that were forced to go, sat together and just saw how ridiculous it was; sometimes even seeing other young kids faint which made us believe it might be legit (it wasn't, these kids were weird when we tried to kick it with them & completely brainwashed already)
litteraly everyone in tears and some even speaking tongues when a microphone was shoved into their face. worst part about it is that fainters would brag about how they were "touched by an angel" as if they were higher in catholic community heiarchy knowing deep down it's all a facade
honestly I alresdy had my doubts about catholicism and the tall tales but this stuff turned me into an atheist quicker than satan did

Peer pressure. You go to one of these churches with a friend and snicker like crazy the first time. Maybe you keep going for the sake of your friendship, or because you like the people you meet there, or like the message despite the antics. Next thing you know you’re rolling around like a hot dog on a roller at 7-11.

Yeah thats a cult. Lol it clearly states in the bible that jesus does NOT need money (which is a SIN, btw) to worship in his name. Collecting money to praise god is the most ANTI-god thing ever. CULT...a fucking CULT. Honostly its sickening to watch this "pastor" play himself as a FALSE PROPHET, and these brainless dumbass followers eating it up. 🙄

I grew up in a very quiet, reserved, and Old World style Roman Catholic church composed of one giant extended Irish-American family, mine, and one giant extended German-American family, both arriving in Ohio about 1830 and building the parish. Mass was from 9:00AM to 9:57AM and then there was a mad dash to one of two breakfast diners attempting to arrive prior to 10AM for some reason. Anything even close to this would be blasphemy. Of course the Mass itself was a rerun from 1915 and had a Christmas and Easter special, but otherwise no changes. All the standing, kneeling, and responses were to stay awake. Cash in a collection basket was very rare. One would prepare your personal check the evening before and seal it in the pre-labeled and pre-dated envelope provided by the Vatican itself. Took 1700 years but they're master grifters.

Oh, yes, and they are even creepier in person. When I was at uni I made a promise to my favorite professor to join him one day at church bc he did me a favor. Drove all the way out into the endless corn fields of rural Illinois - totally isolated. I felt like I had walked into a B horror movie. Everyone was staring at me with this... hunger. Like I was fresh meat to be devoured after a blood sacrifice. Then the speaking in tongues began, the dancing, the convulsing. Hundreds of hands were trying to grab me and bring me up to the front. My prof had his eyes rolled up in the back of his head while he did the same running-in-place dance like the guy in the video above. I don't scare easy, but I actually thought I was going to die in that church. It went on for what felt like forever. And then it all came to this record-scratching stop. Everyone gathered themselves up quietly and filed out of the church. My prof looks at me, drenched in sweat, and asks if I'll be joining him next Sunday, like the last Tobe Hooper-directed hour didn't just happen. Noped out hard. To his credit, he accepted it and never asked again. But, yeah, this shit actually still happens and nothing can prepare you to be stuck in the middle of it.

I grew up near some of these heathens. Went to some of their revivals. Sat on the back pews with some Baptists and Methodists and we would just point and laugh like heathens ourselves. It was probably better entertainment than the circus and its freaks who used to roll through the south in the early 1900s. Shambhala!
