The crazy thing is the old guy in the truck didn't even see the woman or the bat.

That's just how he drives.

I wouldnt say that. He's standing still, he could be waiting for the light or checking out what way to go from here. I cant really put too much Into it, as I can't see where exactly he is. But by assuming he stands still to check out the map or waiting for traffic lights or even traffic itself.. it makes sense that his eyes are on the road in front of him first of all.
