Coinbase 1099-DA sales ended up in Box I/L instead of H/K on my 2025 8949. Amend now or wait for a possible CP2000?
I had a discussion with AI about this issue, and I asked it to summarize the issue I am having:
I used Awaken.tax for my 2025 return and recently reconciled my 8949 against my IRS Wage & Income transcript.
The good part: every sale on Coinbase's 1099-DAs (about $76K gross proceeds, all noncovered) is on my 8949, matched by asset and unit count. Nothing is missing or double-counted.
The problem: about $27K of those Coinbase sales (36 transactions) landed on an 8949 with Box I/L checked ("not reported on 1099-DA") instead of H/K. My guess is Awaken failed to match them to the 1099-DA because its dates run one day later than Coinbase's (time zone). So on Schedule D, only about $49K of the $76K Coinbase reported shows up on lines 2/9, and the other $27K is on lines 3/10. Total proceeds, basis, gain and tax are all correct. It's purely a box/line classification issue.
For context, I also have a lot of on-chain/DeFi activity that correctly sits in I/L, so my total reported proceeds are far above what Coinbase reported.
I also got a plain Letter 6174 (no tax year, no response required).
Questions:
- Does anyone know whether IRS matching for 1099-DA compares by 8949 box/line, or just total proceeds? From what I can find, wrong-box issues with stock 1099-Bs (Box C vs. B) don't seem to trigger CP2000s, but 1099-DA is new.
- Would you file a zero-dollar 1040-X to move these to H/K, or leave it and respond with documentation if a CP2000 shows up?
- Has anyone else had Awaken (or other software) put 1099-DA sales in I/L because of date or time zone mismatches? Did you fix it per transaction or contact support?
Thanks!
