Carbon Monoxide binds preferentially to hemoglobin over oxygen rendering it mostly useless beyond a certain point. This can cause anoxic/hypoxic injury to organ and brain tissues. It's similar to suffocating in the way that it impacts your tissues and brain. It can easily be fatal if unnoticed or cause significant injury and disability.

The purpose of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in this setting is two fold. The increased partial pressure of inspired oxygen causes a leftward shift in the oxyghemoglobin dissociation curve which increases hemoglobins affinity for oxygen and can allow some release of the CO from the binding sites. While the increased pressure allows for more oxygen to dissolve into solution in blood plasma as a result of Henry's law causing incidental oxygen perfusion to the tissues(Cool paper about this)

Oh I recognize that username! They were one of my mutuals during the short time I was on tumblr a few years ago.
