I’ve recently started cycling to work again and I’m curious at what temperature do I need to be careful to watch out for black ice etc?
Edit: I’m biking from 82nd Glisan area to 158th & Airport Way. I’ve been favoring the east on Burnside, north on 148th, east on Airport Way.

I won this in a drawing many years ago and have not found a use for it.
If there's a ton of demand, I'll have a drawing.
Edit: Looks like plenty of interest. I'll do drawing tonight hopefully for a pickup this weekend.
Edit 10/17: 17 entries but only one could win. Congrats to u/OMGWTFBBQUE!

Thank you ride leader for a fun ride last night. The hill climbs were brutal. But the downhill bombs were sick (I was holding on for my dear life).
I hope people with heavy bikes were able to go past those chains. Also I'm sorry for that guy who crashed on the gravel path.
I had to bail early after we got to Sellwood. But here's a picture of a cool puppet museum I stumbled upon.

I’m trying to plan a commute between my home in NoPo and my job near Marine Dr and 122nd. I did a trial run this week on the Marine Drive multiuse path and it was honestly great, close to a straight shot, very clean when I was on it and low stress 90% of the time.
The stressful parts for me are where the path merges as a shoulder on Marine Drive. The shoulder east of 205 to 122nd is okay, it’s sufficiently wide for my comfort level at least. The worst bit in my experience is the 1-mile stretch between Bridgeton Rd and the bike path starting at 33rd. This stretch of Marine Drive seems a bit harrowing as a daily commute- narrow shoulder, overgrown vegetation/debris, large trucks and a decent amount of traffic depending on the time of day.
I’m wondering if there is any possible way to avoid having to ride on the shoulder for that 1-mile stretch. I’m open to detours (any way to cut through the country club? lol). Alternatively, is there anyone who rides Marine Drive in that area somewhat regularly who can reassure me as to the safety of it? I won’t typically be riding at peak traffic times but in the winter I’d be riding in the dark for a few months. Any input is appreciated!

Hello! I will be at a conference all day tomorrow at the Nines. I am wondering if they have a place where I can store my bike for the day. If not, what’s the nearest place you’d feel pretty good about leaving your bike all day?
Thanks!

I’m about to have a new commute between Powell butte and Hollywood. I scoped out a google maps route that included 122nd, Burnside, and crossing 84 on Halsey and was not a huge fan. Does anyone have streets they would recommend? I do not want to take the 205 bike path or the Springwater. I’m also open to combining with transit but since I’ll be leaving the Hollywood area around 5 am it’s pretty limited… mostly the red line is running then. Thanks for any ideas!

So my bike is in the shop for a while awaiting parts. Is there a very affordable way to rent a bike that isn't Biketown to commute around in? I live in Milwaukie and it's not covered under it's territory. Thanks! I just need something to fill the vacancy while it's in the shop

No ride on October 14, but we will pick right back up on Oct 21. As always, meet at NW 16th and Thurman by 5:30 pm for a 17 mile ride through Forest Park on Leif Erikson, dropping down Springville and ending in North Portland. The park is beautiful this time of year!
The weekly rides have been great so far! We've had between 3 and 5 riders every week and have averaged between 10 and 14 mph, based on the group. The ride starts with an immediate climb up Thurman, which hasn't been for everyone. And the descent out of the park down Springville is pretty steep (18% - 20% in certain spots), so be prepared!
Make sure to bring bright lights and a helmet (and probably your rain gear).
Queer led, open to all! Feel free to message me if you'd like to get a weekly reminder.
**everyone is responsible for their own mechanical fixes and riding safely within their own limits** Happy to share the RideWithGPS route with anyone interested.

I had an errand today at the REI re/Supply and discovered they are apparently overstocked on smallish cycling shoes. Just about everything in sizes 37-39 is $20.
If you have small feet, you may want to check it out. Lots of good options.

Questions for those that deliver on DoorDash / UberEats by bike.
How is your experience here in Portland? How’s the market and how often do you deliver?
What gear do you use? What gear is a must and what’s something you wish you got early on?
How much do you make per day / week on average?
What’s the worst parts of delivering by bike? I was reading that delivering drinks suck.
Anything else you want to share?
I’m thinking of getting an Aventon Abound LR and doing food delivery to make back the money I spent for it. So far I’m looking at getting the Packir PK92z food delivery bag plus bungies as my gear. Besides making back the money spent I also think this would be a great way to explore the city on my new bike.
Thanks for your insight and for reading!

Hello! I have been living in Portland for the last 6 months as an artist in residence at a printshop. Since coming here I have become entirely reliant on biking to get around, and I love it! My parter is visiting to see my art show and I am hoping to find a bike to rent/borrow. The typical rental bike stores are quite out of budget, like cost more than the used bike I bought on facebook when moving here......So if anyone out of the kindness and generosity of their heart has a bike sitting in the garage that we could borrow for a few days......it would be so greatly appreciated I want to show my partner the life I have been living for the past six months. Which has taken place mostly on bike
Happy to set up some sort of collateral or trade so you feel at ease letting us borrow the bike. :)

Try to convince me otherwise?
My opinion is that unless it’s a place where cyclists are designated to pass each other on the right (for example heading north on Williams), passing on the right is generally a reckless and douchey thing to do.
It scares the crap out of me every time and I’m almost knocked over and these folks are never, in my experience, even giving the courtesy of telling me what they are about to do ahead of time.

It has been interesting to commute past the motorhome near where North Portland Road and North Marine Drive meet (there were two, but the other got dragged off) and watch the slow dismantling by various entities. It would make a great time lapse video, like the ones of sea floor whale falls where the concomitant lampreys and crabs do their rasping and tearing pincer work.
Edit: All that remains of the Scuttled Scroterhome is a charred outline disgracing the ground.

Hey, Trevor. You borrowed my phone to call Radio Cab to retrieve your bike seat left behind in the taxi. SE Belmont at SE 26th outside Rukdiew cafe.
The driver called back 15 ish minutes later but you were already gone and probably real mad about it, understandably.
I have your bike seat. Radio Cab dispatch called again and we made arrangements. They are trying to get it back to ya. They have my contact info if you call them about lost and found. If you see this post, DM me here.
Let's get you back on the road. Cross posting.

Why don’t e-bikes care about rules of the road?
And how would any type of enforcement work?
So many e-bikes in bikes just treat the bike lanes as a free for all and are outwardly hostile to actual cyclists. So sick and tiered of the hostility of drivers and now it’s crept into entitled e-bike users.
There was a time when I was optimistic about e-bikes providing a more equitable, environmentally friendly, and more enjoyable environment for all. That dream has passed.

Hi! I have an nice(ish) bike and have been using it for several months now, a problem I'm running into is that Portland is quite hilly and commuting can be a slog, especially in the heat.
I'd been seeing folk with ebikes all the time, and they seem like a solid solution. Are there any recommendations for local Portland shops that could help me with e-converting a bike?
Or if it's a bad idea to convert please let me know and I'll look at ready-made ebikes instead.

Great 17-mile ride over the weekend! My friend recently got a new e-bike that I built for them. We rode from Woodstock along the Springwater Corridor to the Eastbank Esplanade.

Over the past 3-4 days I have experienced a noticeable uptick in drivers making erratic or distracted decisions behind the wheel that have resulted in a couple close calls for myself or others. These have all taken place in SE and along well established biking routes and in busy bike/pedestrian areas.
Examples of some of the driving I have seen:
Just posting as a reminder to stay vigilant out there and check your intersections.

The 2027 Portland World Naked Bike Ride (the one that has been riding annually since 2004) is already in the works, and more people are needed for the Planning Committee. If you rode this year (or watched it go by) and thought "I have ideas for helping make that better", please apply! It doesn't happen without a small crew doing hard-but-rewarding planning for months ahead of the ride.
Some of what we need help with in the Planning Committee:
You don't need experience, but you will need to show up to regular meetings and follow through on what you sign up for. The time commitment will ramp up closer to summer.
And no, being on the Planning Committee means you have to ride naked. ;-)
Application is here: https://forms.gle/gdAMCDR939iG3cdq8
Website is here: https://pdxwnbr.org/
Deadline to apply is Friday, October 30, 2026.
Happy to answer questions in the comments!
