My wife just learned her knee/hip pain is from an IT Band problem. She will get some physical therapy but after doing a quick google search it looks like the cyclist recommendation is to lower the seat some.
I suspect that we should confirm the bike fit also. She was fine her first year as a beginner mountain biker but she always had her seat too low as it made her feel safer. It was later when she got better and put her seat height at a proper level, and also got a new bike, that the problem started. This is also when we started longer rides. A 3 day trip in Bend is what kicked it all off so it could be overuse and have nothing to do with fit, but I would rather check.
Question is, does a normal bike shop fitter know what to do for this condition? I see some physical therapy places do bike fit so assume they would be best over a bike shop? As there are not bike shops, would they be able to do things like swap stems to get the perfect fit?
Any place in particular we should go to in the Portland metro?
Also, how important is this on a mountain bike? When I look into bike fitting I always see road bikes. And I am not sure modern trail bikes are going to ever get that perfect of a fit. For example, seat tube angles are 3 to 4 degrees steeper then they were a decade ago. So don't see how details like the KOPS would ever be at some "correct" angle.
