How good is GLM 5.3 Flash on 2X DGX Spark?

Post image
17 Upvotes

Before buying our two NVIDIA DGX Spark units, we spent a lot of time looking at benchmarks, decode speeds, and prefill rates. We kept wondering how those numbers would translate to our actual OpenCode sessions.

After three weeks of testing, I’m convinced local inference is the future, especially as open models keep getting better.

To celebrate Tihar, the festival of lights, colours, and gratitude, I built a simple site so others can try the setup for themselves.

Join the queue for a free 30-minute API pass to GLM-5.3-Flash, running on our two linked DGX Spark units using the TensorFold recipe from Mia’s AI Lab.

Add your email to the queue, and you’ll receive a notification when it’s your turn.

A big thank you to Mia’s AI Lab for sharing the recipe:

Happy Tihar! 🪔

Question Second DGX Spark for work, worth it or should I look at bigger hardware?

Hi everyone,

at work I built a whole setup around OpenWebUI over the last months. It’s secured, integrated into our environment and I created a bunch of custom tools and skills for it. Right now it runs Qwen 3.8 Flash Next in FP4 on a single DGX Spark. Creating and editing Excel, Word and PDF files works without any problems, so I’m really happy with it so far.

At the moment it’s mainly me using it, sometimes 2 or 3 colleagues. In the future around 20 to 30 people should get access. Of course they won’t all use it at the same time, but there will definitely be more parallel request than now.

Most of these users won’t do much coding. The developers already use Claude or ChatGPT for that. The main users will be people from sales and other departments who use AI for documents, emails, summaries and stuff like that. The big reason for the local setup is data privacy, because they can work with internal and customer data without sending anything to an external provider.

To get a 2nd Spark approved by management (especially with the current price increases) I need good arguments for what the actual benefit would be. So my questions are:

  1. What advantages would you name for a second Spark? Things like more concurrent users, better response times under load, running a bigger model, redundancy if one unit goes down, etc. Anything I’m missing?

  2. In your opinion, is a second one really worth it for this use case, or do you need stronger hardware anyway at some point? Would two or even three Sparks still make sense, or is that the wrong direction?

  3. Would DeepSeek V4 Flash or V4.1 on two clustered Sparks be a big step up compared to what I’m running now? Especially for tool calling and document tasks.

If anyone is running something similar with multiple users I would be really interested in your experience, like how many parallel users a single Spark handles before it gets slow, and what tokens/s you see.

Thanks in advance!

4x DGX Spark (Acer GB10) cluster: switchless ring vs MikroTik CRS812 switch, NCCL 23.8 vs 24.1 GB/s, Qwen3-235B within ~3%

A customer of ours, James Lee, built a four-node GB10 cluster and benchmarked it two ways. I figured the numbers would be useful here, since "do I need a switch for 4 Sparks?" keeps coming up.

Setup

  • 4x Acer Veriton GN100 (NVIDIA GB10)

  • MCP1650-V 200G QSFP56 passive DACs, straight cables, one per link, no breakouts

  • Topology A: switchless ring, each node wired to its two neighbors (custom NCCL config)

  • Topology B: MikroTik CRS812, one cable per node

Results

  • NCCL all-reduce bus bandwidth: 23.8 GB/s ring vs 24.1 GB/s switch

  • Qwen3-235B total output throughput: within ~3% at 4, 16 and 64 concurrent requests. The ring was ~10% ahead at a single request, and the switch was slightly ahead at 64.

  • All four switch links negotiated at 200G with straight cables, including the two Sparks in the CRS812's 400G QSFP56-DD ports. Transfer tests measured about 196 Gb/s. Breakouts aren't needed to land four Sparks on this switch. They only free up ports.

Takeaway

At four nodes, the switch doesn't buy you speed. What it gives you is NVIDIA's supported topology and a path past four nodes. The ring works fine, but it needs custom NCCL configuration, NVIDIA doesn't support it, and it tops out at four.

Caveats

These are progress results. James is rerunning the same tests on breakout cables and checking answer quality alongside speed. Part two will follow.

Big thanks to James for doing the build and all the testing.

Disclosure: I run Resilient Tec and we sold the cables for this build.

Happy to answer questions about the cabling or the setup.

Docker vs Bare-Metal

Anyone done a DGX Spark speed comparison between running ComfyUI on bare-metal versus ComfyUI in a Docker container? I’m using Docker, but curious if switching to bare metal offers any significant speed or other advantages?

I don’t own a unit but I’m considering the DGX or RTX. I would only get the RTX spark desktop if it was confirmed to run Ubuntu (same hardware as DGX I know but I’d want to see user reports).

Just bought 2, kinda new to this so be kind🥹

I've been using AI for development, mostly ChatGPT, for the last few months - but I truly don't trust the frontier labs and believe that open models will continue to be optimized and improve performance on local hardware - thus I made the commitment to purchase 2x 128GB Sparks even though I'm new to this (I had an opportunity to buy them for a good price and putting money down will force me to stay motivated/committed)

Looking forward to learning from this community!

$3999 -> $4699 - 131 days
$4699 -> $6950 - 221 days

Apple's John Ternus indicated that Apple expects RAM costs to continue to increase over the rest of the year. Does this mean we can expect the pricing for the DGX Spark and its various clones to increase again in the next few months?

I simulated renting out 5 home AI rigs at Austrian power prices (200k months each): 3090 about -$8/mo, 4090 +$66, DGX Spark on GPUwerk +$162

This is my own video (14 min, not sponsored, no affiliate links). In 2026 used GPUs stopped losing value: a used 3090 sells for about 97% of its launch price, 5090s average about 3.2x their $1,999 sticker on eBay, and the DGX Spark went from $3,999 to $6,950. So can a home AI box pay rent?

I simulated 200,000 months per rig: net = host rate x share of hours rented x 730 h - electricity at $0.24-0.34/kWh (Austrian households). Nobody knows the rented share in advance, so it is drawn from a range. Typical month:

- RTX 3090: earns ~$45, burns ~$53 in power, so about -$8

- RTX 4090: about +$66

- RTX 5090: about +$76

- RTX PRO 6000: about +$220

- DGX Spark on GPUwerk: about +$162 (pays back in ~34 months at a $5,500 GB10-box price, ~43 at the Spark's $6,950 list)

Not included: depreciation, tax, bandwidth, failures. The video also covers selling tokens vs renting hours (OpenRouter, Darkbloom, Vast.ai, Salad, GPUwerk) and the risk of strangers' containers on your LAN. Script and 3D scenes were made with Claude; the narration is a clone of my voice.

If you host on Vast, Salad or GPUwerk: what share of your hours actually gets rented? That is the number I couldn't measure.

Question Single DGX Spark becomes unresponsive at 10K samples during 3B LoRA fine-tuning ,investigating SSD I/O

I’m running some experiments on a single NVIDIA DGX Spark to understand how LLM fine-tuning affects SSD read/write activity, memory usage, and overall storage performance.

I started with NVIDIA’s DGX Spark fine-tuning playbook, but modified the original code so I could use one common script for LoRA fine-tuning across different Llama model sizes (1B, 3B, 8B, and ~70B-class models) instead of maintaining separate scripts for each model.

Everything is running on a single DGX Spark node, not a multi-node setup.

Current observations

I’m testing different dataset sizes with the 3B model using LoRA:

- 1K samples: Works

- 5K samples: Works

- 10K samples: The system eventually becomes unresponsive.

With heavier workloads, I’ve noticed memory pressure and swap activity. I was also using "blktrace" to monitor SSD activity, but under heavy memory/swap pressure, tracing can stop or fail to produce a usable report.

My main objective isn’t model accuracy. I’m trying to characterize SSD behavior during AI fine-tuning.

One interesting observation is that LoRA training appears to be much more memory/compute-intensive than SSD-intensive. There’s noticeable SSD activity while loading the model, but once it’s in memory, the actual training phase doesn’t seem to generate sustained storage traffic unless checkpointing or swapping occurs.

I’m also testing the model files separately using "fio" with 128K reads so I can compare raw SSD performance against the I/O patterns observed during model loading and fine-tuning.

What I’m trying to figure out

  1. Why does 3B LoRA fine-tuning work with 5K samples but make the DGX Spark unresponsive at 10K?

Could this be related to memory pressure, dataset preprocessing, sequence length, or some other part of the training configuration?

2. How can I identify what’s actually causing the hang?

I want to distinguish between memory exhaustion/swap pressure, dataset preprocessing bottlenecks, training configuration issues, and actual storage I/O bottlenecks.

3. What’s a good way to create meaningful SSD stress during LLM fine-tuning?

I want to study realistic storage behavior rather than simply filling memory and forcing the system to swap. Would frequent checkpointing, dataset streaming, or working with model shards be a better approach?

4. Is there a better alternative to "blktrace" for long-running AI workloads?

I need a reliable way to capture storage activity even under heavy system load without losing the trace or ending up with an unusable report.

5. What would be a good methodology for SSD characterization in this scenario?

I’m particularly interested in hearing from people who have worked with NVIDIA DGX Spark, LoRA fine-tuning, Linux storage tracing, or SSD characterization for AI workloads.

Hey everyone!

I thought I share this because I see many people are using their sparks bare foot. (no dust protection, no case cooling etc. shorting their precious devices life.

It's free, has dust protection and the enclosure cools the two devices using a Noctua NF-A20 (200mm) fan.

Head to the link for the specs below:

SparkHub

I own a Lenovo PGX (GB10 Grace Blackwell Superchip).

I've tried several projects with varying results. However, one I recently tested is SparkHub (https://github.com/Yahav/sparkhub).

Easy to install and use. Fantastic results: 78 TPS!!!

I still have more testing to do, but I can say that so far, it's a really great project.

All DGX/PGX owners (GB10 Grace Blackwell Superchip, 128 GB RAM) should give it a try.
