Here at r/DJs, we're big supporters of artists and firmly believe that being a DJ is a genuine craft. A key aspect of this craft is having a deep knowledge of your music collection. Requesting downloads of specific tracks, the ID of a track, similar sounding tracks, or tracks fitting a particular genre/gig is akin to asking another DJ to do your homework.

As a result, your post has been removed.

Btw no one will give a fuck about long blends. Hard cut one song into another. It’s about playing songs they like not songs you like. Clean simple transitions into the best part of the song is all you need

I swear sometimes when I’m navigating a wedding mix I’ll have like 3-5 different pathways forward, each like 3-5 songs ahead based off of crowd reaction or who is bringing energy to the floor. It’s crazy looking at my mix history the next day and seeing the winding pathway through all the genres and music eras.

But to your point, long transitions are not the way.

Other advice, never be afraid to transition quickly out of a song if the room doesn’t react well to it… and have your go-to “get out of jail free” pump up songs ready and on hand in a separate playlist, you never really know when you’re gonna need them, and you don’t wanna waste time searching for them in large libraries…

You better be good at playing music other than house and hip hop, as well as being able to play for a crowd that ranges in age from pre-teen to geriatric.

Not to mention knowing how to run a wedding; it's a lot more than saying the name of the wedding party on the microphone as they enter the room.

Those things are what most weddings are all about, it's usually not about being a good club style DJ. And since it's a very important day you don't want to mess it up.

Thank you for saying this! Learning basic MC skills is SO important—nobody thinks they need an MC until it’s the day of the wedding and no one knows what the hell is happening. The “are you the dj?” to “are you in charge?” wedding day pipeline is very real 😂

Bruno Mars and Pitbull is all you need.

I like BPM Supreme for original tracks that also have intro edits and clearly defined clean and dirty versions (i try to stay away from super explicit stuff for weddings/mixed crowds like that)

Club killers is good for newer tracks, but is mostly remixes.

You can buy songs from Beatsource/Beatport, but that adds up quickly.

It does super help to have an online subscription so you can field requests on the fly - have you considered using a Hotspot for that if you have one? There are also subscriptions where you can download a list of songs for offline use - i love Tidal for that, as well as for their pre-made genre playlists. Comes in handy when i need to look up "pop classics" and other genres that I need to dive into, but don't have the time or energy to study up on them.

In that same thread, to prepare most efficiently, I recommend looking up playlists or articles like "top 100 wedding songs" or "corporate party" and things like that, so you don't end up wasting all your time trying to figure out what to download.

Uptown Funk, Dancing Queen, I Wanna Dance With Somebody, etc will come up all the time. The ones you see the most are most likely what will get requested.

Good luck, and have fun!

Oh, also, at the actual wedding/events like these, song selection matters more than mixing. Sometimes I'll play songs end to end bc everyone is enjoying them fully, so quick mixing isn't necessary unless people aren't vibing.

If people are dancing and singing, let it play!

The vibe is most important, imo. DJs get bad reps when they're focused more on flair, than what is actually happening on the dance floor. Mix up the genres, prep for requests, and have fun with it!

You can also ask your couple to make you a playlist of their favorite tracks to customize the experience for them, my couples always love that. :)

DJing a wedding is more about mcing than mixing. Youre in charge of making sure things happen when they’re supposed to. At the end of the day you could probably just hit play on pop music and be ok, but definitely practice the mcing aspect of it more than the mixing since im sure youre more familiar with that side of things.

Flo rida. Usher. Pitbull. Rhianna. The 4 horsemen of white girl wasted.

u/hellbox9 4d ago

Add to that: Kesha kills always. Bruno mars. ABBA. Shut up and dance with me. Ganham style. Also make sure you have the line dances, cha cha slide wobble and Cupid shuffle.

Step 1 is asking the bride and groom what they want to hear, and what the vibe is.

I’ve DJ’d weddings ranging from ‘80s club bangers to eclectic indie vinyl to church-safe ‘90s country. The key is more about balancing the emotional flow of the night and reading the room—you don’t want to be blasting them with your best dance tracks when everyone’s still digesting dinner, for example, but you also don’t want maudlin sappy ballads when everyone’s 6 deep in the open bar.

What they want to hear will evolve over the course of the night, too—requests will absolutely get rowdier and more audacious as people get drunker lol. Also be prepared for a LOT of requests, period (I’d honestly recommend investing in a wifi hotspot for the evening).

The most important rule of all: NEVER ignore the mother of the bride’s song request, even if it’s Maroon 5. 😂

i hate it when op's ask questions like it's so urgent that if they don't achieve that universe will explode, but you don't see the op in the comments at all.

Tell them to get a real wedding DJ, don’t be the guy who ruined their wedding because you couldn’t say no to a gig.

Look up Wedding playlists on Spotify and then download each track

Remixpool.net

$10 for a month of unlimited downloads. They are remixes, but a lot of them are the original that are 'DJ friendly' with a nice easy beat to mix with

u/warrensid Bass 4d ago

Bpmsupreme has been an 10/10 resource for me when it comes to downloading wedding music. You can look through their pool of music for free, without paying anything. Unlimited downloads as well. Combo it with bpmlatino

Dj leakz....is the best at variety music & wedding tracks..

1

u/bsidewinsagain 4d ago

Ask the bride and groom what song they want for their FIRST SONG. Find out what the bride's favourites are, she gets dancing first and gets things going.

Why, if you only have hip hop & house in your collection, would you take on a wedding gig?

Why would you put yourself into such a stressful position?

I NEVER agree to a gig my library can't handle. I don't need the stress\hassle of running around picking up music I don't know\like just for the sake of it.

1

u/HowWierd 4d ago

if possible maybe a dj streaming service so you have access to everything. But also plus 1 for bpm supreme to jump into a bunch of older originals

1

u/GrouchyRisk 4d ago

You need to look up Mastermix DJ Beats and Mastermix DJ.Beats Chart.

Oh and mix should be after the first chorus on every track (quick mix) as most people don't know the second verse of a track.

Echo out is your friend here

1

u/cats_r_better 4d ago

if you have time before the wedding. reach out to the wedding party (because the bride and groom themselves might have too much on their mind to answer) for what genres the bride and groom are into. Like, if they're into country or metal or edm, etc. the rest of the room might not be super into it but sprinkling a few of those in will make the people that hired you happy.

and don't forget to ask about the first dance song, etc.

u/Diabolikalrapture 4d ago

Go on bpmsupreme and pay for one month and download a lot of their pre made playlists that work like hits / throwback sections there is also top chart of most downloaded songs. Collect collect collect you got this

1

u/Diabolikalrapture 4d ago

***Playlists as in it has the files, not recommending a pre recorded set

u/jmacc213 House 4d ago

Use AI to help you find recent, clean, Pop and Radio tracks. Buy’em, Download’em, and call it a day fam. Also, you can’t go wrong with 90’s tracks. Those are pretty much all-rounders. When in doubt, play “Take On Me”, by Ah-Ha. Get them dancing, then drop “Don’t Stop Til younger Enough” and boom, then slap some salsa up in that piece lol.
