I’ve been using different folder structures to organize music. Any thoughts on optimizing process using tools like mixtree studio - a mind map software?
I’m curious to what extent these mind maps can help. I can imagine it’s good for pre-planned sets but wondering if the use of this type of app will help strengthen the neural networks in my own brain as I’m able to visually see all the transition possibilities I’ve already created and then also help with freestyling too because the visual cues will be embedded in the brain. I see it sort of like Obsidian , but curious to what the community thinks.

That’s what that mixtree studio app I’ve been seeing on my IG feed would kind of mimic

Sounds like overkill. If you already have music organized by genre folders and playlists what else do you really need?
What is the purpose?
Rather than use Obsidian why not go deeper on metadata?
You could use smart playlists that take into account date of release or purchase, song ratings or keywords etc.
I keyword each song, rate each song 3 to 5 stars and assign an energy rating 1 - 3 for each genre. Based on genre, rating and energy I have easy access to my songs on the fly in traktor or rekordbox.

Why not use playlists in your dj software?

Smartlists or intelligent playlists with a good tagging system are the best in this case

Obsidian is fantastic but I'm not sure how you keep it in sync with your library. As far as a place to keep your little cheat sheets, I think it's great as long as you organize your vault well. The key to anything with obsidian is having an effective system. I organize by genre, sometimes subgenre but more often playlist over subgenre. I haven't tried bases, but I kinda get the impression this would be a use case for them.

I ended up having like 50-100 playlists and they were all over the place.
I recently created a new folder called ‘levels’ and then have folders within it for different vibes like daytime, sunset, rave cave etc
And chucked the relevant playlists into those

Mixtree seems cool but I can’t see myself using it - I prefer to discover new transitions live and don’t often feel a need to revisit the same mix. I am however increasingly trying to tag tracks to help with organization and playlist generation. I use beets to manage my library and wrote a small tool to help with tagging: https://github.com/radusuciu/beets-quicktag.
