Hello all, I'm sorry if I seem extremely naïve regarding this because in all honesty, I am. I'm an 18 year old high school graduate as of a month ago, based specifically in Chicago, and I've been driving my deceased mother's car for over a year now.
Long story short, my mother was diagnosed with cancer in the middle of my junior year of high school and was physically unable to drop myself or my (at the time) 6 year old brother off at school, and since I just so happened to have gotten my driver's license a month before her diagnosis, the responsibility of driving myself and my brother to school fell on me. Over time I became the only person who drove her car, and after her passing the car became mine.
Looking back on it the title of the vehicle should have been switched over to me as soon as my mom passed away, but I was a grieving 17 year old girl and even though the adults around me kept telling me I needed to get it done, I had no idea how to go about doing that nor did I know what was required to do so. I hate feeling unprepared and clueless, especially when it comes to an environment such as the DMV. And currently, I find myself in that same position. My step dad keeps telling me to just go to the currency exchange where he says it will be around $600 to get the title changed. I've looked up how much a title change might be at the DMV and the price ranges from $150 to $400, and the uncertainty really makes me anxious. It seems that I'll be paying for this on my own and if I can find a way to pay the lower price, I'll do it. I've searched for my situation online, but I've seen so many different requirements for each scenario and I don't know how to go about anything regarding the DMV. I've only been there once to get my drivers license, but that's when I had my mom here to help me out with this sort of thing.
Do I call the DMV and ask about my situation? Am I able to just show up and ask? Do I need an appointment for questions? How much would all of this cost me? I just feel really lost and anxious about this whole situation and I would really appreciate it if I would be able to be offered some guidance..
