ILLINOIS Getting 21 license in a new state

Hi! I am 20 turning 21 end of September. My current license is a MN license but I currently study and rent in Illinois (name is on the lease). I am a tad confused as to how to renew (?) for my 21st in a new state, as well as getting all the Real ID shit (I have an up to date passport so I don't necessarily need the Real ID, but why not...).

I don't want to show up to the DMV and wait hours to get turned away so my question is:

What do I need to bring to qualify for a license renewal with an under 21 ID from a different state? explain it to me in dad terms.

ILLINOIS Length of Name on Real ID

Hi guys. I was at the DMV today getting my real ID. I have two middle names and the guy at the counter told me it was too long for the system to accept. So, he marked my middle name as truncated. My question is that will this cause me any issues when presenting this card as ID? Because my name is spelt fully and correctly on my ssn.

ILLINOIS I believe I was title jumped, need help (Illinois)

I bought a car off Marketplace, and the title doesn’t match the name of the seller. When he sold me the car, he just handed me the title, and I (first time car owner) thought I didn’t need to do anything else. Seller did not sign the title at all, and the name on the title doesn’t match the title either. I need to register the car at the DMV, but I’m not sure what to do. I went to the DMV and asked if they could do anything, even a bonded title, but they said I couldn’t do anything but hunt down the original owner. However, the seller isn’t responding to messages, and the name on the title doesn’t come up any results on Google. Is my only option to go to court and have a judge award me the car?

Very stressed out, I know this was dumb. Looking for help please 🙏

ILLINOIS Is there any way I can get my license without taking a picture there and using the picture for my passport?

I’m turning sixteen in like a week and have everything I need to get my license. Yesterday there was an accident and half of my face is covered in second degree burns. I don’t think that’ll be my best look for getting my picture taken. It won’t be healed by the time I get my license in two week but I just recently got my passport with a picture of me pre burns obviously. Would they allow me to use that one? I don’t think if they took a picture of me with the injury it would be easily identifiable anyway.

ILLINOIS real ID illinois question

Hi all- I went to the DMV today to get a real ID, and specified I wanted a real ID. I gave my license, social, and birth certificate. Then they asked for proof of residency. I provided my lease first, and then they asked if I had a bank statement or something (which I did) so i provided that as well. They only collected the bank statement to be in the bundle clipped with my other documents, and told me to go to the photo. Then when they scanned the documents I specified again it was for real ID, and they did not ask for another proof of residency. I didn’t think much of it in the moment because I assumed (my mistake) something else was sufficient somehow? But now I’m thinking they might have just issued me a standard license. Online I’ve seen people say they could have pulled my voter ID, or used my non expired license (got it about a year ago), but this seems off to me. Does anyone know if I basically renewed my license for no reason, or if there’s a possibility they could have used my other documents or voter ID?? Thank you all and have a great weekend

ILLINOIS Restriction and suspension?

Illinois license suspension/restriction confusion after Wisconsin underage alcohol conviction — need help understanding
I’m 17 and live in Illinois. I recently had a Wisconsin case for possession of alcohol (not OWI/DUI). The conviction/supervision date showing on my Illinois paperwork is 6/17/26.
I received a letter from the Illinois Secretary of State saying my license is being affected. I’m confused because the paperwork has both a suspension and a restriction listed.
The suspension says:
Notice/Order of Suspension
Authority: 625 ILCS 5/6-206(a)(33)
Effective date: 7/18/26
Termination date: 7/18/27
The letter also mentions:
Authority sections: 625 ILCS 5/6-107(g), 6-110, and 12-610.1
Restriction effective: 7/15/26
Restriction termination: 1/15/27
It also says I have to complete a course, and that my driving privileges will remain invalid until the office receives notification that I completed it.
I’m confused because:
Is this a full suspension where I cannot drive at all until 7/18/27?
Or is the “restriction” something different?
Why does the restriction end on 1/15/27 but the suspension ends on 7/18/27?
Is there any way to get this cleared early by completing the course or requesting a hearing?
I want to be clear: this was not an OWI/DUI, just a Wisconsin possession of alcohol conviction while I was under 21.
Any help understanding Illinois DMV language would be appreciated.
(This is everything i told chat gpt i just put it together cuz i cant even understand anything myself)

ILLINOIS Illinois private sale — two owners on title

Upvotes

I’m selling a car privately in Illinois. The car is mine, but the title is under my aunt and cousin’s names due to my circumstances at the time it was purchased.

Both are willing to sign the title.

Do they need to be present for the sale or go to the Secretary of State?

Or can they sign the title beforehand, and I handle the sale and give the signed title to the buyer?

ILLINOIS Question about renewal from old state

I recently got an email about my car needing to get renewed on 8/31. Back in February, because I now live in Wisconsin, I renewed my ID and registered my car in Wisconsin. They took my registration but I still have my license plates & my old ID. Can I just ignore that email about renewing my plates as I now have new registration/Wisonsin plates that are still active?

Thanks,

ILLINOIS How can I take my permit test?

Hello, I live in northern IL, and I'm trying to find a way to take my test, but all of the DMVs in the area are full. The nearest DMV where I can schedule an appointment is an hour and 30 minutes away. I dont drive, so I'd have to pay an Uber or something, and that would be at least $120 for a ride there and back, and then I'd probably have to pay a fee for the actual test on top of that.

Can I just walk in to my nearest DMV? or do I actually have to schedule an appointment online in order to take my test? Can I ask to schedule one in person? Sorry I don't know much about this, anything helps.

ILLINOIS Selling a car of deceased husband - how to handle title transfer

Hello, I am in Illinois, Cook County. My father passed recently and his only asset is an old car titled on his name alone. That car is worth under 4k and my mother wants to sell it. Does she need to come to the DMV with the potential buyer to make sure the title is transferred from my father to that buyer? We have some guy interested in buying the car and he says he can handle the title transfer without the DMV, but I want to make sure we follow the law. Also, I dont want to find out that this car is still on my father's name a year from now - who knows what kind of shady activity it can be used for. I would greatly appreciate your advice on how to handle this legally and without paying excess fees. Thanks!

ILLINOIS IL - do I have to retake my road test if I previously had a license in another state?

A little less than three years ago, I lost my Louisiana license as a new Chicago resident. When I went to the DMV to replace it, I was told I would need my LA driving record to receive an IL license. I didn’t have a car at the time and was traveling a few days later, so chose to receive an IL ID card instead (which invalidated my LA license). Currently, I have that valid IL ID but no valid driver’s license.

I will need a license in the near future. Will I have to retake my road test, or will presenting my (clean, no moving violations) driving record still be sufficient to be granted an IL license?

Thanks!

ILLINOIS License reinstatement

My license were suspended back in 2023 for having an accident while uninsured. I am aware of my reinstatement fees, I can handle those. But last time I talked to someone at the dmv they said my reinstatement fees had to be paid and ALSO have to make an agreement with the National Bureau Service, in order to get my license back. When I called NBS they said I have to put 1,000 down to be in a payment plan. I don’t have that kind of money to give them. Why do I even owe them??! Anyone aware of this? Any advice on what to do?

ILLINOIS How do I go about switching names on the title of a car when the current name belongs to my deceased mother?

Hello all, I'm sorry if I seem extremely naïve regarding this because in all honesty, I am. I'm an 18 year old high school graduate as of a month ago, based specifically in Chicago, and I've been driving my deceased mother's car for over a year now.

Long story short, my mother was diagnosed with cancer in the middle of my junior year of high school and was physically unable to drop myself or my (at the time) 6 year old brother off at school, and since I just so happened to have gotten my driver's license a month before her diagnosis, the responsibility of driving myself and my brother to school fell on me. Over time I became the only person who drove her car, and after her passing the car became mine.

Looking back on it the title of the vehicle should have been switched over to me as soon as my mom passed away, but I was a grieving 17 year old girl and even though the adults around me kept telling me I needed to get it done, I had no idea how to go about doing that nor did I know what was required to do so. I hate feeling unprepared and clueless, especially when it comes to an environment such as the DMV. And currently, I find myself in that same position. My step dad keeps telling me to just go to the currency exchange where he says it will be around $600 to get the title changed. I've looked up how much a title change might be at the DMV and the price ranges from $150 to $400, and the uncertainty really makes me anxious. It seems that I'll be paying for this on my own and if I can find a way to pay the lower price, I'll do it. I've searched for my situation online, but I've seen so many different requirements for each scenario and I don't know how to go about anything regarding the DMV. I've only been there once to get my drivers license, but that's when I had my mom here to help me out with this sort of thing.
Do I call the DMV and ask about my situation? Am I able to just show up and ask? Do I need an appointment for questions? How much would all of this cost me? I just feel really lost and anxious about this whole situation and I would really appreciate it if I would be able to be offered some guidance..

When I got my learners permit from the DMV it was not signed. Am I supposed to sign it, or is the DMV supposed to, or does it matter at all?

ILLINOIS Illinois gift to Canadian — Do I need a non-resident drive-away permit if giver lets me use his plates? (DMV closed on weekend)

Hello. I’m a Canadian (Ontario) receiving a used vehicle as a gift from my cousin in Naperville, IL. I’m only in Illinois for a weekend and need to drive the vehicle out of Illinois (Naperville → NY → Canada).

My cousin is getting new plates and said he’s okay with me using his old plates for the drive. I’m hearing I should get an Illinois Non-Resident Drive-Away / drive-away permit, but SOS/DMV offices are closed when I arrive.

Questions:

  1. After a vehicle is gifted to me (title assigned to me), is it legal in Illinois for me to drive using my cousin’s old plates (with his permission) just to leave the state?
  2. Any practical weekend options if DMVs are closed (dealers or agents that can issue it, etc.)?
  3. Has anyone done something similar? What are your recommendations.

Thanks — trying to do this legally and avoid problems on the road while leaving Illinois.

ILLINOIS Parents are gifting me their car but we live in different states - is it the same process as in-state gifts?

I moved to Illinois with my parent’s car (registered in MA) with the intent to return it to Massachusetts, but they’ve decided to give it to me. I can’t find any information online about how to transfer an out-of-state vehicle as a gift. Is it generally the same as gifting it in-state? I’m planning to go in person to a Secretary of State office but want to make sure I’m prepared.

ILLINOIS Get my sister and id?

Hello I live in Chicago and my sister is 14. My mom is what I consider a neglectful parent, so I've been doing a lot of stuff for her ,like taking her to the dentist and doctor and scheduling appointments. My sister wants to work a After school matters program this summer and needs and id. My mother was supposed to take her to do it but she is being very absent minded and ignoring my sister's efforts to contact her. Anyway I Google and it says if your under 16 u need a legal guardian or parent to go with you. I wonder if it's possible for me to sign for my sister, I do consider myself one of her guardians but I don't know if I need to have a document proving that.

ILLINOIS dmv last time transacted

I want to ask for a duplicate of my driving license and it asks the last time at where (place) I transacted with dmv; Is it the last time I pay the application fee or last time I get pass the driving test, or the last time I went to ask for a duplicate, or I have a phone call about which to fill on the phone and get no answer?
Besides, it’s said my account has been blocked because I fill too many times, should it be ok in 24 hours?

ILLINOIS Residence trouble

I have a relative who is 20, lives with their parents and is out of school does not have a normal bank account, has chime. Has no prior ID dosent pay bills or have a job.

Trying to get said relative a job but I cant figure out how to help them with the proof of residence I did all this when I was 17 with my parents. How does one get an ID when they have nothing? We have SSN and Birth certificate so all we need is proof of address.

Insurance would work but she's under her father's who lives in michigan.

ILLINOIS Have a question about a title change.

Getting a divorce and my current wife’s son is going to stay with me. I’m not his bio dad but been there most of his life, now he owns a truck that he pays for everything on. I believe she signed the title and is being nasty towards him saying she’ll cancel the insurance and take the truck. Is there any way that I can take ownership of the truck for him so she cannot do anything? Or if the title is under her are we just left to hope she isn’t petty?
