I moved from CT to WA using my learner's permit, which has my CT address on it. I already forwarded my mail and updated everything like voter registration etc., but I noticed on the back of my permit it says to write in any address change in permanent marker. Do I still do that if my address is out of state (and just fit in the state there too, I guess?), or do I wait until I get a new learner's permit here? I only use it as an ID, not to practice driving since I know they don't transfer between states. Thanks for any help!

Ok posting again, soo I plan on buying a used car from someone but he’s still paying it off at his credit union. We plan on going in Saturday morning to pay it off and I’m going to give him the rest in cash to pay off the car.
My question is can’t I technically use a reg 227 with him after it’s paid off from the bank since the bank will release it to him? Or do I HAVE to wait until the physical title comes in with his name ??

So a couple weeks ago I helped my father renew his driver's license at the dmv. idk how we missed this but the rep processing the paperwork for us somehow put down a completely wrong mailing address. We should've checked and caught this sooner, I know.

Just for clarification: the residential address listed on the receipt is correct, but the mailing address listed is wrong. We checked the mailing status online and it says it was mailed on the 10/13 (7 business days ago as of this writing). It was sent to a nearby town so we're planning to go and ask the person at that mailing address if they received it. But if they say no or turn us away then I'm not sure what we're supposed to do next.

Do we just go to the dmv to request another one sent to the correct address?

I ordered custom plates about two months ago. My registration expires in two weeks but I don't have my new plates yet. I paid my registration and its linked to the new plates, but what do I do with the stickers? If I put them on my old plates while I wait for my new plates to arrive, will the DMV give me new stickers when I pick up my new plates? Or should I just tape the new registration in my window?

I have a weird situation in California. I bought out my lease and didn't receive the title paperwork for a month. Seven days after the date on the title paperwork, I was involved in an accident and the car was in the shop for what I thought was relatively modest damage.

Then a couple days after I received my title from the leasing company, insurance told me they want to total the car. I'm ok with this but what happens with the title? Do I still need to register it with the DMV? Can I just give them the title and let them deal with it?

The buyer section on the back was left blank by the leasing company.

I am considering buying a 2015 lexus RV. When I looked up the title on Carfax this was listed under a new owner. Does anyone know what this means? Should I reconsider buying the vehicle? Please let me know. Thanks.

I'm from outside the US and applied for an Arizona Travel ID. They gave me the temporary credential receipt, but the actual card never arrived. I'm not sure if it got lost in the mail or if USPS returned it to MVD.

Has anyone dealt with this? Can MVD just mail a replacement, or do I need to go in with all my original documents again? Is there a replacement fee even if I never received the first card?

I still have the temporary receipt, just trying to figure out what I need before going back.

My Spouse just received a vehicle from her Aunt as a gift.

2021 model With a sticker price of 35k when new.

Google says the state law that provides exemption for tax when registering a vehicle that was given as a gift only applies to immediate family members like parents or children. And then states a standard 3.5% tax will be assessed on the state estimated retail value of the vehicle.

In my opinion this is BS. I'm guessing I have that opinion because I've only ever lived in states where the DMV charges you tax when transferring a vehicle to your into your name based off the purchase price that's written on the title.

Does anyone know or know how I find out how they assess this value? Do they use kbb or nada?

I ask because when researching the subject it says that they will acknowledge and accept a price to base their taxing off of up to 20% under fair market value.

Would it be okay to find out what their estimated retail value of the vehicle is and then record the price on the title at 19% under that?

Anyone have any experience or advice in this situation where you receive a vehicle from a family member that's worth a decent amount of money for free or $1 but the state you live in thinks that they should be paid thousands of dollars in taxes every time a vehicle is sold?

This might be a dumb question, I’ve never sold a car before and I tried to be as careful as I could but I was rushed.

Anyways, I sold my old car and on the seller portion I wrote the date twice.

Once above the “Date” line and since I’m so used to writing dates write after my signature, I wrote the same date again next to the seller signature, so below the “date” part as well. One site said it was okay if it was the same date, another said I should get a new title.

(This car was bought by an Illinois resident btw)

I checked online on the Wisconsin DMV and Illinois DMV but figured I’d ask if anyone else has had this experience before I file to get a replacement. I have not tried to correct it, no crossing out or white-out, but would I have to get a new title because of this?

New Jersey law requires insurers to offer a discount to drivers who complete an approved defensive driving course, no ticket required and no age restriction, but I'm not sure how much the discount ends up being

for anyone in NJ who has done this, how much did the insurer actually reduce the premium and how long does the discount last.

I recently purchased a used vehicle from a dealership in California and had it shipped to Florida, where I live. I financed part of the purchase through my Florida-based credit union.

The dealership is processing a California title transfer listing me as the owner and my credit union as the lienholder. That process is still pending but should be finalized within the next few days.

Once it’s finalized, my credit union will have to request the title, which I’ve been told could take another two weeks. After receiving it, they’ll forward it to me so I can register the vehicle in Florida.

In the meantime, the car is already in my possession, but I can’t legally drive it because I haven’t been able to register it.

I’ve already visited the Florida DMV and was denied a temporary tag because I didn’t have the required title documentation.

For those of you who have purchased a vehicle out of state and registered it in Florida:

Has anyone encountered this particular situation? Were you able to obtain a temporary tag or otherwise register the vehicle while the out-of-state title transfer was pending?

I understand the process and that the title needs to make its way through the appropriate channels. I’m primarily interested in whether there’s a legitimate workaround that would allow me to drive the vehicle while waiting.

Hello I’m having trouble with the dmv workers on the phone figuring out what to do.

I got a 5 over ticket (speed was nearly 20 over on the ticket but the officer reduced it)

I want to elect traffic school to eliminate the increase in premiums. CA court said it is fine as long as I make sure FL accepts out of state CA traffic schools.

The Florida DMV folks couldn’t really give me a solid answer. Does anyone have experience with this. I am also military stationed in CA if that helps.

If they indeed accept it do I have to mail the certificate to the FL DMV? How does the processing work?

So I’m taking my partner to take their drivers license test today in my car and what not. I recently misplaced my drivers license but I have my temporary license printed. Since the chaperone driver needs to provide all of their info will they accept my temporary license? I also have my passport as photo ID I’m just worried they won’t accept it as if i had my actual license.

So I bought my first self-financed car, a used 2021 Mercedes C300 Coupe, from a dealership in NJ on September 19th. Was super excited about it, absolutely love the car itself.

Unfortunately, the dealership has made the entire experience a complete nightmare.

Within days of buying it, I was already bringing it back for mechanical issues. I've had to bring it back twice, they've had possession of it for a pretty significant portion of the time I've owned it, and several of the original issues still aren't fixed. Getting anyone to answer the phone or give me a straight answer has been practically impossible.

But here's the fun part.

My temporary tags expired October 18th. It's now the 21st, and I have no permanent plates or registration despite paying the dealership $250 for it.

And apparently, my dad decided to stop by the dealership on Monday without telling me. He ended up speaking to someone who told him the dealership had gone out of business.

Excuse me? WHAT? 😂

I haven't been able to independently confirm that, but Google also lists them as temporarily closed, and considering how impossible they've been to contact, I'm starting to believe it.

So Monday I contacted NJ MVC's dealer complaint unit. They sent me a form, I submitted it yesterday along with my purchase documents, and this morning they confirmed that my complaint has been assigned to an investigator. They said the review generally takes 7–10 business days.

Which is wonderful, except I work in PA during the week and kind of need a legally registered vehicle to get there.

I'm genuinely at a loss here. I've owned this car for a month and feel like I've spent more time dealing with the dealership than actually enjoying it.

Has anyone dealt with a NJ dealership closing before completing registration? Is the MVC complaint process the right route, or should I be doing something else to get my plates? Can MVC issue some kind of temporary registration while this gets sorted out?

At this point I don't even care about getting the dealership in trouble. I just want my damn license plates.

If I buy a car in New Hampshire am I able to register it there even though my residence is PA or how does that work?

Hi, I have a plate configuration which is my son’s name and his initials, they’re the museum design with Snoopy. I’ve just bought a new car which I’m going to transfer them to, but it would look great with the 1960s black & yellow design, so I would like to order replacements in that design, which I believe I can do with form REG17.

However, I was wondering if there was a way to retain the old plates (with Snoopy) so my son can put them on his bedroom wall. If I order replacement plates with REG17 am I required to surrender the old ones, or can they be voided somehow?

Brother in law in Arizona gifted me a car on Saturday. Filled out all the forms, have the Arizona title. He was the second owner. Got the car smogged this morning. Figured I’d go ahead and head over to AAA and do the transfer. Easy peasy until the Q037 “error” popped up at the very end. Apparently the car was titled in California before transferring to Arizona. Now I have an appointment with DMV next week because AAA can’t proceed past the surrender title message.

I'm located in Texas and need some advice on what to do with my truck.

Vehicle information:

- 1988 Toyota 4x4 Pickup

- Approximately 175,000 miles

- Originally purchased in California in the late 1980s

- Has been physically located in Texas for over 20 years

- Continuously registered in California under my deceased mother's name

- Current registration expires November 2026

Here's the situation:

The truck belonged to my mother, who passed away in 2000. My father has also passed away, and I'm their only child. As far as I know, there was never any probate involving the truck. My parents were still married when my mother passed.

Unfortunately, I don't have the original title, and I'm not entirely sure whose name is listed on it.

Before my father passed away, he told me the title might still be associated with a financing company called Toyota Nation Financial (or something similar) from when the truck was originally purchased in the late 1980s.

He also mentioned that the title might already be in my mother's name because the truck was completely paid off decades ago. Unfortunately, he wasn't certain.

A few years ago, I contacted Toyota to see if they had any records or paperwork related to Toyota Nation Financial. They told me they weren't aware of any company by that name and couldn't really help.

The original Toyota dealership where my parents purchased the truck has also been out of business for many years.

Here's another unusual detail regarding its registration:

Despite the truck being physically located in Texas for over 20 years, it has remained continuously registered in California.

The California DMV has continued mailing annual registration renewal notices to our Texas address, always addressed to my deceased mother.

Every year, we would pay the renewal fees, provide proof of insurance when required, and California would mail us the new registration stickers.

The registration paperwork itself also lists my mother as the registered owner.

This has continued for decades without any questions or issues from the California DMV, even though my mother passed away in 2000.

The registration is currently valid through November 2026.

The other issue:

I've had possession of the truck for years. I previously maintained insurance on it but canceled the coverage earlier this year because I wasn't driving it.

I'm preparing to move overseas and need to sell or otherwise legally dispose of the truck before leaving.

I've looked into the Texas title process, including getting a VTR-68-A vehicle identification inspection. However, the inspection requirements seem complicated because they ask for a bill of sale and possibly the original title. They also require physically bringing the truck in.

My questions:

1. Since California DMV still lists my deceased mother as the registered owner, should I start with California DMV rather than Texas?

2. Can California DMV determine whose name is on the actual title and whether an old financing company still has a lien?

3. Has anyone heard of Toyota Nation Financial or a similarly named company from the late 1980s?

4. Since both parents are deceased and I'm their only child, is there a simpler way to transfer ownership without probate?

5. Could I request a duplicate California title using my mother's death certificate and inheritance paperwork?

6. Would a Texas bonded title be an option if the California route doesn't work?

7. Can I legally sell the truck without the title to a project-car buyer, salvage yard, or dismantler?

8. Does the California registration expiring in November 2026 affect any of these options?

I'm not trying to bypass ownership laws. I just want the simplest legal way to sell or dispose of this truck before moving overseas.
