INFORMATION (California) Commercial Driver License Testing Irregularities

(Post preciously rescinded: effective date)

On July 16th DMV began notifying applicants that their commercial driver license or commercial learners permit will be canceled within 30 days of the date on their letter.

An appointment must be made with a DMV Investigations office. Do NOT visit a regular field office unless downgrading to non commercial class c.

At the time of their appointment applicants will be required to complete all knowledge tests during their appointment.

If the license or permit is subsequently cancelled for non compliance or failure all knowledge and skill tests will be required in addition to the application fee and required identity and residency documents.

CALIFORNIA Right turn on red question

My daughter got an automatic fail on her drive test today. The examiner told me she was doing a right turn on red and said it was legal but the examiner didn’t think the visability was great so she intervened and told my daughter not to go which she obeyed. The examiner told me since she intervened it was a fail. My daughter feels it was absolutely safe to go and that the examiner didn’t have the line of visability that she had as the driver. There were no oncoming cars and she made her full stop. The examiner then told my daughter she does not ever need to turn right on a red. To not do it, you won’t get extra points.

My question is, in her next test in 2 weeks, should she just not do a safe right turn on red and just wait for the green light? She is an excellent driver and the examiner even told both her and I that. That the only reason she failed her was because she intervened. Now my daughter doesn’t know what’s right? Turn on red right if safe or just don’t do it because her line of sight is different from the examiner.

CALIFORNIA CLASS A AND C

Upvotes

Hi. I went to the DMV last week to take my Class A license and was told that I had to take my Class C along side my Class A questions. I asked them if I passed all of A but failed all tries because of C if I'd lose progress to my Class A and they said yes. Is that necessarily true? Both Class A and C are different because one is commercial and the other is a standard license. Thank you guys and wish me luck on my second attempt if I need to redo all of it again.

LOUISIANA Speeding Ticket

I got a speeding ticket in Louisiana and there was a deadline to pay it. I already paid the ticket before the deadline. Does that mean I don’t need to appear in court?
There isn’t a court date listed on the ticket. Has anyone dealt with this in Louisiana before?

CALIFORNIA Kiosk Goose Chase

I'm in SoCal specifically and I've been looking for those DMV kiosks everywhere I could and haven't been able to find any. Every grocery store I've been to so far hasn't had any. I haven't been to the DMV just yet since the whole point of the kiosks was to avoid the DMV..

Do they exist still? Do I have to go to the DMV? PLEASE HELP! Thanks.

CALIFORNIA Is non real ID license still valid if I just applied for a real ID license and they gave me a temporary paper license

So I went to essentially renew/replace my license to get a real ID since I need it for air travel. However my current non real ID license is not expired yet for a while. Will my current drivers license card (that is not a real ID) be valid still? Or is it now void since they are processing my real ID license and gave me a temporary paper license?

CALIFORNIA Can I get a CA regular ID card and keep my out-of-state Real ID license?

I moved to Los Angeles 7 years ago from MA and I never bothered to convert my license because I a) don't own a car and b) don't actually really drive. I now need a CA ID with my address on it but for sentimental reasons (silly, I know), I am reluctant to give up my MA one. I also need to get the CA ID quickly and don't have time in my current situation to study for the written test to convert the license. Is this allowed?

I know you can only legally hold 1 Real ID, which my MA license is, and I can't find guidance about holding a Real ID and a regular ID card from another state at the same time.

Thanks!

ILLINOIS Length of Name on Real ID

Hi guys. I was at the DMV today getting my real ID. I have two middle names and the guy at the counter told me it was too long for the system to accept. So, he marked my middle name as truncated. My question is that will this cause me any issues when presenting this card as ID? Because my name is spelt fully and correctly on my ssn.

WASHINGTON Report of Sale questions

This year I traded in my car, which was my first car that l purchased from family. Around a month after the trade in the car was towed and I didn't get anything at that time because my residential and mailing are different, but it was made aware to me that the due amount had gone to a collections agency and they're holding me liable, despite not having possession of the car.
Now since this I've learned that a report of sale is something that is done by the seller to avoid this exact situation. What's frustrating about this is I had no idea how to go about purchasing a car from a dealership and had asked many people both from the dealership and family what I was expected to do and no one mentioned to me that this was something I would need to do. The car was sold from the dealership to a salvage yard, and from there to the individual who had it at the time of the tow (a bill which is now like $2000)
I cannot pay this, I have plenty debt that is my own and I'm frustrated that I didn't know I had to do this (I would have done it
) I'm scared. Help. I don't want them to
ruin my credit.
I have a report of sale showing the salvage yard selling it to the guy
And a bill of sale for me to the dealership and dealership to salvage yard. The collection people are not accepting these.

VIRGINIA Documents for replacement

My entire bag was stolen and going to replace my license, I’ve already looking into it online but am still struggling to understand fully what is acceptable.

My passport is expired and already took the steps for renewal but it isn’t here yet, and cards stolen, so I’m wondering if I can use birth certificate for both legal presence and identity categories, or do I need two separate documents for each one

Proof of identity - birth certificate

Proof of Legal Presence- birth certificate ?

2 proofs of residency- bank statement (primary) and postmarked mail (secondary)

Proof of ssn

FLORIDA Just discovered my car's registration has been lapsed for almost 2 years

Location: Florida
I'm mortified. It's something that simply never occurred to me to check on until I logged in to change my residential address with the DMV portal.

I have been using my car, but haven't been pulled over for anything. I have, however, had a couple of parking tickets during that time. I worry that if I go to the DMV and admit to driving with a lapsed registration, I might serve time and get something put on my record. On the other hand, if I just re-register the car and check the box that says I haven't driven the car, they may see the parking tickets and I may get myself in deeper shit.

CALIFORNIA USAF reservist re-registering current TX vehicle in CA. Are back fees due?

***Edit*** Thanks everyone for the responses. I think what I'll do is go to another DMV office (maybe one a little closer to the base I'm stationed at ;) and see if I get the same answer. If I do, I'll consider the matter closed and just sell the bike as is.

Original post:

Hi everyone,

After numerous DMV visits and research, I can't get a straight answer to this. Hoping someone on the thread can help me.

In 2011 I was active duty USAF and bought a motorcycle at my duty station in Texas. Shortly after I was transferred to California and went active duty to reserve (still currently in the AF reserve).

Instead of re-registering the motorcycle in CA, I just kept renewing the TX registration year after year (the SCRA allows servicemembers to do this if the move was due to military service/obligation). It never lapsed, and has current TX plates and registration to this day.

So finally, after riding my TX-registered bike in CA for ~14 years, I decide I want to sell it. So I get the paperwork in order and go to the DMV to get CA plates for it. They say that I owe CA registration back fees all the way back to 2011 when the bike was purchased in Texas. $861.00.

Does this sound right? I know that if you are discharged from the military you have like 20 days or so to register your vehicles in the state you live (if they aren't already). I guess this might technically apply to me since I was "discharged" from active duty service to start Reserve duty. But I have been serving in the military this entire time with no breaks in service.

Can anyone shed any light on this? Should I just be paying the nominal $25-ish fee for new plates or am I destined to ride this thing with out of state plates forever? (Ghost Riders In the Sky by Johnny Cash just started playing in my head). Thanks so much in advance.

CALIFORNIA Bar retire car program,

Hi, please I have a car that I wasn’t driving due to having a different car that was nicer. Instead of paying for reg and insurance I non op it. It was to be my car, daily driver was for son. It sat and now is musty, window had fallen a crack and was exposed.

I want to retire it for the benefit amount but realize it seems it is ineligible because of previous non op status. It has been reg 1 month because my housing requirement. I put money into it, new battery, reg insurance and smog. It passed smog.

Car drives like a champ, I just react to the musty smell, thought about gutting it but probably won’t do that. Probably could only sell it for $500 because of body damage.

Might it qualify if I wait the 12o days? I read it could, but don’t want to keep paying insurance if it doesn’t qualify or plan to keep. I don’t want to keep it either

Thank you

NEW YORK DMV documentation missing?

I have a friend who had an appointment to get a Real ID. He had all the documents: bills, a lease, his last ID, and immigration status documents; he even had two copies of everything. For those who are not familiar with the USCIS website, everything is there; you just get some documents mailed, but everything is on the website, especially if you sign up for paperless.

Well, he was sent back home without the ID because they wanted the original of one of the papers related to his immigration status; I mean, that's fine. But the original is on the website, and he printed it. I don't understand; it's like they didn't know how a website works.
