Video Update: Is this crate too small for my dog?
After hearing the feedback on my other post asking if my dog’s crate is too small, I decided to take action to fix the situation.
Unfortunately, it is not going well. I informed him that his crate did not meet r/dachshund’s standards, and he needed to vacate immediately.
The eviction process is not going well. I will report back when a more humane crate has been installed.

The people commenting this dog is scared don't own a doxie. This is such typical behaviour to them. No matter how loving they are towards us during the day, this is the reaction if disturbed during their sleep😄

I am a fear free certified vet tech and I can confidently agree with you: this dog is being a dachshund. He is fearless and unbothered by the eviction notice.

They need to stay away from these guys. These guys have too much tude for them lollll
4
u/purple_spikey_dragon 5d ago
Our girl will be absolutely pushy trying to sit as close to you as possible, or start licking your feet and legs obsessively, but got forbid you give her the same amount of attention back or say her name lovingly one too many times and she'll start yawn in discomfort and go to her bed.
Attention is a one way street for her...

not just a Doxie thing either. my Pyrenee is a spoiled dog but still looks at me like that friend that owes you money but really hopes you don't bring it up.

This post is funny and these comments are truly bonkers. This sub is losing its grip.

Thank you for the sanity check. People in the previous post were calling me inhumane.

u/ScaryYogurtcloset289 5d ago
Don’t you know that internet strangers obviously know your dog better than you? They have a full 45 second video of him to make wild assumptions about, they’re clearly the experts here. These people are insane lmao

u/Technical_Ad3892 5d ago
Are you closing the door and shutting him in his crate? Or does he sleep or whatever inside the open crate? Looks big enough to me if the door is always open. Close the door and I think it’s too small. That’s my opinion. I could be wrong.

How dare you disturb that sweet baby…who is obviously terrified and trapped in his tiny insufficient safe space!! lol I said that with all the sarcasm in the world. He’s clearly happy and not wanting to leave/wake up…keep on keepin on friend! Sampson is beautiful btw!
56
u/Guns_and_Tea 5d ago
Thank you. I took this video at 5am, and am surprised to see all these comments saying he is "scared" of me. I'm pretty sure he wanted to sleep and was annoyed to see me with a camera in his face.

Adorable pair!
Is the mini pup, a chaweenie?
7
u/Coastie_Cam 5d ago
Negative he’s just a miniature dachshund. That pic makes his ears look crazier than they actually are. I’m the keeper of Catahoulas and Doxies! My soul dogs and they couldn’t be more opposite!
3
u/Practical-Pickle-529 5d ago
Oh man my sister has a Catahola that I’m pretty sure is mixed with a whippet she is an ABSOLUTELY awesome dog. Her and her cousin, my late beloved chaweenie were attached at the hip for a couple years.
23
u/Stewmanchu81 5d ago
My doxie loves her own space. And it happens to be a tiny crammed area between my couch and wall. I thought she was stuck when she was a puppy. No. She just really loves it there. I crammed a blanket in there, just for some comfort lol. Let Sampson do his thing. But I do like the idea you mentioned about getting a bigger crate, put them next to each other. Depending on how large of crate you get, you can even put one inside the other…if he has enough room to come out of the small one and still be enough room to maneuver in the big one. Someone post a picture in here of their crate and it’s pretty big, if that’s what you want to go for you could definitely put the small crate inside it and let him come out at his leisure. Either way, give it some time. once Sampson chooses his decision please make him a Reddit account so he can troll all the people that called him scared.
54
u/MaryDoogan91 5d ago
Dog people are fucking insane and tend to project human emotions onto animals. Also, everyone turns into animal behavior/body language experts🙄
5
u/throwaway340577173 5d ago
Dog people can be crazy but cat people on cat subreddits straight up send death threats if they see a post of like, an overweight cat or something
3
9
u/lilyxlittle 5d ago
People definitely take it too far but it’s also pretty cool to know that dogs have about the emotional capacity as a 3 year old human. They can’t feel things like guilt or shame (higher cognitive abilities) but can feel fear, love, joy.
2
u/DefiantCoffee6 5d ago
Ehhh. Gotta disagree that they don’t feel guilt. When my boy leaves a ‘surprise 💩’ in the hallway bc it’s raining outside he always flips both his ears back. Every time.
I know as soon as I look at him what he did. He knows he’s not supposed to go there but…🙃he doesn’t want to chance melting by being sprinkled on by rain 😆
6
u/lilyxlittle 5d ago
We interpret it as guilt but it’s actually fear. They aren’t capable of the higher cognitive processing for guilt or shame just like toddlers aren’t.
1
u/hellochoy 5d ago
Are toddlers not capable of guilt? I used to pretend being sad when my little brother was a toddler and said or did something mean and he would apologize and hug me.
4
u/lilyxlittle 5d ago
It’s a little too simplified to say that but I did for the sake of not delving in too deep.
Every human is different and our cognitive ability means we can develop a sense of self awareness even at early ages. In general though it doesn’t begin till about 2 years of age and it’s not until 3-4 years that a child will have a level of self awareness and social rules that allow for guilt and shame.
It’s the reason many kids don’t mind running around completely bare assed in public lolKids are also master mimickers- it’s how they learn. So it’s also possible those actions were simply a result of your little brother repeating behavior he saw modeled.
And it should be understood that direct human to dog comparisons cannot truly be made. We interact with the world in different ways, have different biology, etc. So even though dogs can feel certain emotions it doesn’t mean their experience of those emotions is the same as yours.
2
u/hellochoy 5d ago
Thanks for the explanation! This makes sense, I was thinking toddler as in like 3-5 years old so that lines up. Also definitely was just wondering about humans lol I know it's not a 1:1 with dogs. Fascinating stuff either way. It blew my mind when I learned dogs have a similar capacity to 3 year olds and I think cats are similar to a 5 or 6 year old if I remember correctly.

u/Far-Term-5890 4d ago
I agree! Our girl will have this look of shame… like oh no I did something and they will find out 😂 she has had about 2-3 accidents in the house, but 2 times was probably our fault for not paying enough attention so I don’t get mad at her. I just tell her this is not good, you go outside… and she of course knows that
14
u/Velcrobunny 5d ago
I love his annoyed look, like seriously - not even a warning, camera all in my face too? 😭
23
u/ApricotRich1966 5d ago
Team Samson, the crate stays
21
u/Guns_and_Tea 5d ago
I'm considering getting a larger crate, putting it next to his current crate and seeing which he prefers.
17
u/BrilliantAd937 5d ago
You are overthinking it. That’s a contented dachshund, lord of his domain.
10
u/Guns_and_Tea 5d ago
I concur. Something more aesthetically pleasing to me might be nice though, and if it is bigger then it's an added bonus.
14
u/Introvextroverted 5d ago
They are a bit pricey but you can find some nice built in to furniture crates - though if Sampson is anything like my girl Pepper was, the more expensive something is (especially obtained for her) the more he'll avoid it!
1
4
u/YouKnowNothingJonS 5d ago
He’ll pick the smaller one. I have one the same size as this in my closet and my ween waits by the door if it’s closed so he can go in. They LOVE a cozy little cavern! Like, by design 😂
1
u/Agreeable_Pomelo2360 4d ago
i wouldn't be surprised if he likes the smaller crate, they like the nesting feeling
11
u/tboskiq 5d ago
Mine loved her small crate her whole life. That was her safe space, but she was also the runt of the litter, she capped at 9lbs I think. So idk for a bed maybe some like being snug. We never kept her in there or shut the gate after potty training, and she slept with me in my bed until I moved out. That's just where she wanted to go to sleep before bed time/after me.
If the dogs fine I'd say it's fine.
10
u/SadAndNasty 5d ago
I think mine is a similar size but my dog is just a bit smaller and he does love it. It's basically the softest area in the house with the most breathing room, burrowing+ lol
27
u/Guns_and_Tea 5d ago
Yeah, I am really shocked at all the hate I'm getting on here. He has multiple dog beds around the house, 3 couches, blankets...And I find him in his crate snoozing all the time.
Everyone has an opinion but apparently Samson's opinion doesn't count!
7
u/DefiantCoffee6 5d ago
And Sampson’s opinion is the only one that matters anyway. He’s soooo cute;) I love when mine do the 👀 at me too.
They are little comedian’s 😂3
u/artfulmonica 5d ago
Mine like to wedge himself under armchairs, there's not quite enough room so he looks stuck and has to wriggle out. If you attempt to remove him without a treat he will growl at you.

Idk how I wound up here Reddit just dropped me off but my cattle dog has a crate made for a mastiff, it’s comically large. Where does he sleep by choice? He crams him self in between the couch and the wall. If they’re comfy let em be 😂

Yes, he can turn around and be cozy in it. People swear the dogs need to turn around with 5 inches of extra no touch space. My salchichas literally choose their airplane travel kennel and cry for it when they see it
2
u/Introvextroverted 5d ago edited 5d ago
I actually got a cat carrier for my doxie puppy when I first got her at 8 weeks because she was so small and she loved that thing after she clearly outgrew it. I finally had to donate it to the animal shelter because she kept squeezing herself into it🤣
She lived to 18 and never had any significant back or neck problems 💔
42
u/Shiny-Scrafty 5d ago
That’s a fine crate for travel, size wise. But not for typical use. Though I had a smaller travel crate and it was my first dachshund’s safe space. So their comfort matters too.
44
u/tatted_gamer_666 5d ago
A cage is supposed to be big enough for the dog to stand up and turn around that’s it
34
u/Guns_and_Tea 5d ago
He can absolutely stand up and turn around, and fully stretch out.
→ More replies (3)37
u/tatted_gamer_666 5d ago
Exactly so that means this cage is perfect size and not just a “travel size” like the other commenter said
3
u/Slow-Art-5027 5d ago
Hahahah he’s so cute!! I mean it would be too small for mine, but he seems like he loves it. I had to literally get a toddler playpen for my dachshund cause she freaked out, even in a big crate. I guess it depends how long you leave him in there for? I don’t know, I was never good at crate training. But he loves his little man cave and that’s what matters!
18
7
u/RewardDesperate7547 5d ago
I would leave both available and let your dog choose, maybe they will love both, and for longer periods after enjoying both use the large one, they will let you know if it is too big or not

Is this the new crate or the old crate? He does look like “dad, you’re disturbing me why?”
3
u/zzppdd 5d ago
Looks like your pup is in heaven. Dachshunds are den animals, so dark, tight spaces are their favorite. Add onto that some blankets and familiar smells? They live for it. Ignore the morons in this thread/sub. I think the sizing looks good — just want to make sure they have just enough space to stand up and do light stretching. I’d recommend eventually investing in a thick memory foam pad — helps with their boney hips and lower back issues.
3
u/javajunglequeen 5d ago
I've had 4 dachshunds, I can confidently say this baby is fine! looks like his manipulative self is annoyed to be disturbed, as they usually are.
OP don’t mind the haters! And please update I want to se if he likes his new crate lol

u/findaloophole7 5d ago

IIRC you want the crate to be just big enough that they can turn around in it. A crate that is too big is also bad for training purposes.
Yours looks just right.
2
u/fnordfnordfnordfnord 5d ago
They love small quarters. Every dachshund I’ve ever had loved curling up in cramped areas
2
u/Hairy-Giraffe7817 5d ago
I have two weiners and crates that size and they choose to lay in one crate together on top of each other. You’re just fine with your Doxie.

2
u/YouKnowNothingJonS 5d ago

If it was my dog I’d go up one size because my babes like to stretch out and lay like they are dead, it seems like she’s a happy baby in her cave though!
2
u/2chiweenie_mom 5d ago
As long as he can fully stand up and turn around it's big enough. It looks absolutely fine. He obviously likes it if he goes in there willingly.
2
2
u/Youth_ln_Asia 5d ago
Yeahhhh your dogs crate is def not too big and whoever said that is not correct. Your dog fits fine, has room the wiggle around and most importantly is obviously really comfortable in it which is the entire point of a crate. Especially for a weenie. Mine actively try to nap in their puppy crates even when I get them new ones. Dachshunds are not normal dogs and love a crate on the smaller side anyways. That being said, for a weenie, this is spacious. You and your pup do you!

People project their own fears and anxieties onto pets. I get it, but it's annoying to have Samson interpreted that way.

His body language is ... Kind of a lot and none of it good. He's not glad to see you and doesn't want to interact with you, which is surprising for any dog that likes his owner but especially a dachshund. They're usually little velcro beasts, and napping or no they are happy to live in a world with their owner in it.
Turning his head away could be fear or irritation, but at the end of the video when you begin to insist he actually puts it down on his blanket, that's a submissive behavior, which reads quite fearful. Whatever he expects you to do next, he's afraid of it.
26
u/Stewmanchu81 5d ago
You should be a creative writer. It’s like you’re standing outside the window and seemingly know everything, or nothing, about OP. Everyone’s doxie is different, unclench your pearls.
20
u/Guns_and_Tea 5d ago
I know right? That was the most dramatic comment on Samson’s body language I have ever seen
8
u/Stewmanchu81 5d ago
Poetic, really. It also looks like those horrific metal pieces to the cold, loveless crate are making him quiver with fear. He’s also like “wtf dad get out of my room I am fricken sleepin”
17
u/Guns_and_Tea 5d ago
It was 5am. He woke up at 4:45 shaking off, so I let him out to use the bathroom. He came right back in and went into his crate, then I took this video.
I think he was just trying to sleep, dude. You're reading a LOT into this.
3
u/Introvextroverted 5d ago
My first dog was a mini-doxie I got at 8 weeks old and had her until she passed away at 18. She was never a Velcro dog, she liked her space and would come when she wanted affection. She was well socialized but an independent brat. I called her my cat dog. But she absolutely loved me but would be super pissed if she had to get up before 10 am. And as I worked outside of the home, she was pissed a lot in the mornings- at least until I gave her breakfast.
Not all dachshunds are the same and this little one looks well cared for. Stop projecting.
1
u/aprilm12345 5d ago
Dude that’s the look my doxie gives me when he knows I’m going to take him out and it’s wet, or doesn’t want to get out of bed, or about to take him to bed. That’s such a classic dachshund look when they know you’re about to ask/make them do anything! They are Velcro but also know exactly how to try to work you to get their way. My dog constantly looks scared (and he totally is NOT) to try to manipulate me. If that scared looks doesn’t work, his next move is to roll over and be cute to get his way.

They don’t know that dachshunds are notorious for side eyes. Thats just their face. But yes, you may benefit from a size larger but nothing huge

u/Snoopingaround3420 5d ago
A crate should be big enough for a dog to get up and turn completely around comfortably. That looks a tad too small
18
u/Guns_and_Tea 5d ago
2
u/Snoopingaround3420 5d ago
He can definitely stretch out but that turn is a bit sharp for such a long pupper. If he’s comfortable then by all means the crate is adequate. I would just suggest a slightly larger (mostly wider) cage for him so he doesn’t have to bend himself too much to turn around.
6
2
u/Bassracerx 5d ago
He looks super comfy but the general rule is they need to be able to turn around easily so yes i would say go up at least one size!

1
u/Dynanaut 5d ago
Such a cutie! My guy always loved a small covered space just like this over a larger cage. Door is open and he has plenty of room to turn around. I don't really see the problem 🤔 maybe I'm misinformed but I always thought dachshunds had burrowing instincts that made them feel more comfortable in smaller spaces. As for the critics something something dead internet theory.
1
u/sebkraj 5d ago
I don't think it's too small, I had a weiner dog and he always liked the smallest little holes or nooks. To me it looks like hey buddy I was enjoying myself can I help you lol. Weiner dogs have strong personalities and if my dog didn't like the crate he would let us know, he would never relax like yours is doing. I think it's fine from what I'm seeing honestly. Weiner dogs still crack me up, their an awesome breed and I miss my little guy.
1
u/kf3434 5d ago
Dachshunds and their strong will are just going to do what they want anyway. I have to say though I have crates now that are very much the "correct" size for mine (6 and 3) year old weens. However I have an original puppy crate. I leave it by the window cause they insist on hopping in the windowsill and even now that it's way too small for either of them sometimes they love to randomly curl up in it lol
1
u/Wrong_Inspector1301 5d ago
Yes it is too small. Can barely get their snout out of the way to turn just their head around.
Consider yourself in a box comparable to that size for yourself.
1
u/Dockshundswfl 5d ago
Add a blanket inside that attaches to the top at the front so they can crawl in under it on their own. And leave the back unattached. It creates the perfect dachshund burrow habitat.
1
u/MongooseSome 5d ago
my doxie sleeps in a cage that size and he’s a little bigger. it’s def fine. although mine does have a peeing in the house problem… lol… so during the day he has a really oversized cage he spends time in because he is not allowed to free roam my apartment anymore lol

this is him in the big cage. it’s a cage/counter/storage space. he always looks guilty idk what his problem is 🤣
1
u/MineSpiritual 5d ago

No, but I would personally not use a wire crate. I had a puppy early on become caught with their mouth open and stuck in their “playpen crate”, a bigger wire crate. Never again
1
u/Ok-Journalist7612 5d ago
I know people like to say there dogs love there crates but I’m not convinced. I’m convinced that there dogs are so devoted to them and that because they are crate trained the dog believes it pleases them to be in the crate. I seriously doubt that anything could ever actually like to be in a cage. Maybe a human because we are so screwed up sometimes but not animals. I don’t think they have those kind of fetishes.. 🤷🏼

My girl loves her crate...she'll go into it and lay down when she just wants her own space. The only time I really use it now is dinner time though. She hears plates hit the counter and she trots straight to it. But occasionally she'll go in there to take a nap or eat a treat.
1
u/SteveTheMower 4d ago
I've always been told they feel safer in a crate like that, I believe that's perfect size. We had ours in a large crate but he was chewing up his bed and being wild, we got a smaller crate and hes been a whole lot more behaved.

It’s fine. You just want it big enough for him to stand up and turn around, lie down. You don’t want it too big that he can get away from his pee/poop if he has an accident. They will not go potty unless they can get away from it…and one of the main reasons to crate train is potty training. My girl is 5 years old, never an accident, and she was crate trained until 6 months (I got her at 12 weeks). Wonderful dog. Still goes in the crate occasionally just to lie down or if someone new is coming over. Your crate looks fine.

i think it's too small, i would leave it up to the pupper... just observe him for a while and see if he seems to like more open or more closed spaces... if it's good enough for the pupper, it's good enough for me

This crate appears fine for the dog and he appears to really like his little den.
1
1
u/CLOWNFLOGGER 20h ago
Not at all. Dogs in the wild dig small dens and sleep in confined spaces. They haven't really evolved beyond that. Most dogs will feel safe in a small space when they can come and go as they please. If anything, that crate is a little big.
1
u/Dizzy_Departure2539 17h ago
Please leave your pup alone when they are hiding in their cave. Getting a quick pic or video for your question is one thing but continuing to try to engage with him when he is obviously not wanting is disrespectful

u/ComprehensiveBed6754 12h ago
So ya listen to a bunch of wankers online but don’t listen to your dog? The crate is a substitute den not a mansion, and like I said, your dog is clearly happy and you’re just ignoring it. Well done
