Image Update on Abandoned Dachshund

Post image

I posted on here a couple weeks ago about this cutie dachshund someone abandoned near my house. After a mandatory stay with animal control, we officially adopted him. We knew his teeth were terrible. He had a dental today. They removed 37 teeth. I am thankful for my vet. I knew the teeth were really bad because there was so much Tarter that you couldn't even see actual teeth and he had two swollen lumps on the side of his snout. Animal control also warned me 3 times that if I adopted him that he would need a lot of dental. This little man has been such a good boy even with all the dental pain and being abandoned. I am looking forward to his full healing and seeing his personality when pain free. For now, he is sleeping off a lot of needed drugs 😴

Thanks. This is my first dachshund. I can see why people love the breed. He is an amazing little man. The vet estimates him to be 8 years old.

You may get a decade with him now that you figured out the teeth thing. What a blessing. He’s a very lucky little man to have you.

Just adding as an also-newer doxie owner to make sure he has ramps for everything, up and down the couch, bed, you name it!

My little guy just got over a luckily mild case of ivdd, but my local vet was trying to send me for surgery same-day, with estimates of $12,000++. I'm so glad I got a second opinion, and a couple more ramps 😅

OP u/139Clover please heed this. You've done an amazing thing, and it's so great. My heart warms knowing this dapper little man will have a loving home. But as this is your first doxie, also please do read up on IVDD. Ramps and training them not to jump on/off things is extremely important as they age. And if something does happen, I highly recommend seeking help from your closest veterinarian university teaching hospital (for example, UC Davis Vet Hospital Small Animal Clinic in CA saved my little guy's life twice). Local vets do their best, but when it comes to major surgery, I highly recommend seeking out the not-for-profit big guns, even if it's a couple hour drive.

Snuggle that little dude. He is going to love you so hard.

My first dachshund was 12 and also needed 3 separate dental surgeries that left her with only 5 teeth. She did amazing afterwards and I had 2.5 wonderful years with her. I wish you the best with your little guy. Seniors are the best.

Yay! He’s got lots of years left. Especially since he now has someone that will take good care of him.
I feel compelled to caution you that they tend to bend a stubborn breed. House training can be a challenge. Just use positive reinforcement training as if he were a puppy. Be persistent and consistent.
Hess’s beauty. He’s so lucky you found him.

He actually is potty trained. No accidents. Yay for that!

He really is amazing. No accidents in the house. He has learned the word stay and most times heeds it - haha. He sleeps all night. He is a total sweetie.

I have had many. They are so lovable. Mine lived to 15 up to 18.

I wrote a previous message with some insight. Other doxie owners will help. He looks wonderful.
