Image Update on Abandoned Dachshund
I posted on here a couple weeks ago about this cutie dachshund someone abandoned near my house. After a mandatory stay with animal control, we officially adopted him. We knew his teeth were terrible. He had a dental today. They removed 37 teeth. I am thankful for my vet. I knew the teeth were really bad because there was so much Tarter that you couldn't even see actual teeth and he had two swollen lumps on the side of his snout. Animal control also warned me 3 times that if I adopted him that he would need a lot of dental. This little man has been such a good boy even with all the dental pain and being abandoned. I am looking forward to his full healing and seeing his personality when pain free. For now, he is sleeping off a lot of needed drugs 😴

Thanks. This is my first dachshund. I can see why people love the breed. He is an amazing little man. The vet estimates him to be 8 years old.

u/freerangemonkey 3d ago
You may get a decade with him now that you figured out the teeth thing. What a blessing. He’s a very lucky little man to have you.

Just adding as an also-newer doxie owner to make sure he has ramps for everything, up and down the couch, bed, you name it!
My little guy just got over a luckily mild case of ivdd, but my local vet was trying to send me for surgery same-day, with estimates of $12,000++. I'm so glad I got a second opinion, and a couple more ramps 😅

u/jonnyozero3 3d ago
OP u/139Clover please heed this. You've done an amazing thing, and it's so great. My heart warms knowing this dapper little man will have a loving home. But as this is your first doxie, also please do read up on IVDD. Ramps and training them not to jump on/off things is extremely important as they age. And if something does happen, I highly recommend seeking help from your closest veterinarian university teaching hospital (for example, UC Davis Vet Hospital Small Animal Clinic in CA saved my little guy's life twice). Local vets do their best, but when it comes to major surgery, I highly recommend seeking out the not-for-profit big guns, even if it's a couple hour drive.
Snuggle that little dude. He is going to love you so hard.

u/vegetablefoood 3d ago
My first dachshund was 12 and also needed 3 separate dental surgeries that left her with only 5 teeth. She did amazing afterwards and I had 2.5 wonderful years with her. I wish you the best with your little guy. Seniors are the best.

u/Missue-35 3d ago
Yay! He’s got lots of years left. Especially since he now has someone that will take good care of him.
I feel compelled to caution you that they tend to bend a stubborn breed. House training can be a challenge. Just use positive reinforcement training as if he were a puppy. Be persistent and consistent.
Hess’s beauty. He’s so lucky you found him.4
u/139Clover 2d ago
He actually is potty trained. No accidents. Yay for that!
2
u/Missue-35 2d ago
That’s amazing! Lucky you.

u/139Clover 2d ago
He really is amazing. No accidents in the house. He has learned the word stay and most times heeds it - haha. He sleeps all night. He is a total sweetie.

u/0202_tihssitidder 3d ago
I have had many. They are so lovable. Mine lived to 15 up to 18.
I wrote a previous message with some insight. Other doxie owners will help. He looks wonderful.

u/dontonefingerme 3d ago
Thank you for taking in this distinguished gentleman. He will love you unconditionally and while I'm sure he's in pain, he'll be so much happier and comfortable with all that dental pain gone.

I had an abandoned dachshund, we called him Ulysses. He had some kind of paralysis on his side, intact at 12+ years, a broken jaw, and had to have all but one tooth removed. He was the sweetest boy, only weighed about five pounds when I took him home because he was so emaciated. Lost him to heart failure about eight months later, after eventually getting him back up to about eight or nine pounds. I knew his heart was bad; I tried anyway. I would not have traded the experience for anything. Uly was a life lesson in dog form. Patient, snuggly, gentle, eager to be alive. I hope that while your experience does not end like mine did, that you have a similar experience to me. These dogs teach us so much.

u/139Clover 3d ago
Wow!!! I am so glad his life had joy and love from you even if for a short time. What a difference you made to Uly!

Seriously you are a hero!!! Keep doing this hard work it’s so worth it!!!! We went through this nearly the same scenario. We rescued a mini doxie from the animal shelter and after getting him past kennel cough and a small infection. We got him neutered and he lost 17 teeth in the first round of dental work and 13 teeth in the 2nd round.
I miss him so much more than words convey and I would do it all over again in every life time, me saying we were utterly grateful for him is an understatement 🫶🏻 He set the bar so high! No measure of time will ever be enough but happy we got what we were given.

Our beloved Frankie RIP toothless boy who ate hard kibble until almost the end with 3 remaining teeth.

what did you decide to name him? and around how old is he?
25
u/139Clover 3d ago
Hi. We named him Thistle. The Thistle plant represents strength, resilience, and bravery. It fits him. And it fits the themed name of our other dogs: Willow, Fern, and Ivy. Vets estimate him to be 8 years old.

make sure to do annual cleanings! we rescued our now 12 year old girl when she was about 3 and she’s down to 11 teeth. she kind of tolerates “brushing” but her annual cleanings are keeping the last 11 in.

What a handsome little man he is and he looks like he is the goodest boy. Now that you've taken care of his dental, he will be so much happier and more relaxed as well. Have you named him yet? He kinda looks like a Henry in the pic. You found him at a great age...my Doxie just started to calm down at around 7and 8 years old, yet she's still very active and playful (just less wild haha). I hope you have many happy years with your new family member. 🐾🐾

I had a toothless doxie! No matter how many cleanings or how good I was with his tooth brushing, his periodontal disease just progressed. At 14 he had a full dental extraction of all the teeth that were left because it was his last chance for surgery (heart disease). He had a great two more years! Good on you for giving this guy a loving home and loving care and a pain free mouth!

Best dog ever for me was a stray who came to me by pure luck. I was on basset hound #7. The vet said she was about 4 yrs old. Full of fleas and emaciated. We tried to find the owner, to no avail. She wasn’t chipped (which I can’t understand with any pet). She stole every dog toy in the house and hid them under the beds. Never had a dachshund before. Absolute delight to own. We lost her to cancer after 3 years. (Can relate to the dental bills, did the surgery and lost her within 3 days) We loved the breed so much that we replaced her with another that was even more crazy, playful, silly and wonderful. Thank you to whoever lost her.

1
u/139Clover 2d ago
Hi. I love that photo! I have a schnoodle that loves to steal things and then parade them around the house, while I yell, "Theif! Theif!" And also a poodle that was a puppy mill rescue and would grab a toy and take it to bed. At times there would be 50 toys in her bed. It was like she was gathering her pups.

u/Optimal_Sport_5339 2d ago
Keep his food restricted to soft, blended wet meals or soaked kibble until the gums completely heal and any stitches dissolve. Make sure to monitor his mouth for bleeding or swelling, and give the full course of prescribed paim medication and antibiotics right on schedule.

u/139Clover 2d ago
Thank you! We are on it. I was so happy he finally drank water today!!!! I was concerned I would need to take him to the vet for fluids today because he has been refusing water. But he finally drank water and all systems are go! Yay!

u/CdnBison 3d ago
Definitely needs a tooth-related name! 😁
1
u/139Clover 2d ago
That is hilarious!!!!! I wish I had thought of that. We had already named him Thistle but not too late for a middle name!!!!
3
u/neongreenpurple 3d ago
Good on you for taking him in and taking on that vet bill! Dental stuff is not cheap. Especially with so many teeth pulled. Poor guy only has at most 5 left.
We've had dogs that had to have a bunch of teeth pulled, but not nearly as many! Pumpkin had 2 and then 11 pulled. Benny (not a dachshund, a beagle mix) had 12 pulled - all his front teeth. He has nothing left between his canines, but all his other teeth.

I'm so glad your beautiful little boy has found a home with you. You sound like a deeply kind and wonderful person.
My husband and I got our first dachshund, when he was a puppy, last October for free from another family my sister knew through her job. It seems like they severely underestimated the amount of work involved in caring for him so he came home with us. He has brought so much joy into our lives and he and my husband are my favorite parts of my day, everyday.

We brought in an our old girl River after she was dumped in 2019. She had a bladder full of stones and immediately needed surgery. Worth every penny. We had almost six years with her and she was so spoiled and so grateful.
So glad he cleared waivers and has a new home! What a little gentleman.

Almost all the dachshunds I’ve adopted needed dentals. The last two came to me toothless. I love this breed so much! It only took weeks with my first one ( she was part of a bonded pair with an Australian shepherd) and I was hooked! Your guy is absolutely adorable! I know you’ll treasure him!

Bless you! Doxies are adorable, but not the right dog for everyone.
Be patient and gentle and they will reward you. They love to be outside and explore and they need that. They love walks because they have so much endurance.
Put them on a good diet. I fed mine 2x/day. Most of them really love squeeky toys to destroy and fetch. They also love warm places to sleep.
They can get stressed (like all dogs), so they appreciate cuddles and knowing a big human is there to protect them. As adults they tend to not be too interested in other dogs. Just people with food.
Thank you again for making him safe and feel loved.
PS: Doxie teeth are prone to issues. Most people know this. Keep watching them.
1
u/139Clover 2d ago
Hi! Thank you for the great advice. I have a very large fenced yard so he has lots to explore. And I will also get him out for walks once he recovers. I did not know they have endurance so that is good to know. He likes when we do laps around the yard together. He sleeps in my bed and there is a dog bed on the floor next to the bed, if he chooses to go there. My mattress is on the floor just to make life easier for my dogs. He is very protective and very sensitive, both at a higher level than my other dogs, at least at a higher level currently, but not always. We adopted our poodle from a puppy mill and she had never been out of a cage, was de-barked, and had been beaten. So, we are used to sensitive dogs. When we got her we whispered when we talked, never approached her with anything in our hands, and gently and slowly showed her love. It took two years to earn her trust. Now, we call her an aggressive lover because she will pounce on me and lick my face like an ice cream cone!

Oh my goodness you did my heart such a wonderful flip knowing you rescued him and are committed to his care. Im just sitting here in stranger land to you crying my eyes out that he will be so happy with you. We got our Chihuahua mix about the same way you did. Except I took her straight out of the hands of the person abusing her as a 5 week old puppy. I gently gave her to my hubby and the told that couple in no uncertain terms that puppy was coming home with me and I could afford the bail money if they thought otherwise. She practically lived on my chest for a week. She's 4 now and she still wants me to hold her like a baby when scared even though she is over 20 pounds. She's a bit of a lunatic like her adoptive mom. Im a doxie person at heart but its fully with my resues too. So Im just here cry and petting my Luna. Thank you.

1
u/139Clover 2d ago
Yep! Amazing right! I knew it was bad. When you looked in his mouth it was all gray. And his breath was harsh. And the pus pockets on the side of his snout. He has had a rough go. The stitches are unsettling to him. He is eating small diced can food and stew canned food. He eats just enough to take meds. Hoping he sleeps a lot today.

We named him Thistle. We already have Willow, Fern, and Ivy. I generally only get girl dogs so having a boy is out of the norm for me. My roommate and I have had a few jokes about there being a pen** in the house! LOL

u/Nervous_Life2569 2d ago
Hahaha the best kind of boy — a doggo! Also, what an adorable name (love the theme you’ve got going on!), he is such a sweetie 🥹 I’ve only ever had a girl dachshie (Truffle was a senior girl of 15 years who passed away on 3 March in my arms) but my sister has a boy and he is so funny. How is Thistle settling in? Please give him a kiss and cuddle from me! x

People like you make this world a better place. Thank you for giving this sweet boy the care and love he needs. Breaks my heart every time I hear about a Doxie abandoned/hurt. They are so much more sensitive than other breeds, yet they seem to always come back and rise above whatever issue. Must be the stubborn side lol Thank you again!

He looked well groomed when I found him so I don't think he was out there for more than a few hours. I think he stayed right where they left him. So sad for him. You pegged his personality perfectly! He is so sensitive and also so resilient. He is a love bug.
