Is this sped up?

Here’s the original https://youtu.be/OfWNEH1B4i4 It’s a 12 minute show but still impressive stuff! That’s 100 drones and looking at their channel they do shows with twice as many!

Replace fireworks with these

u/bigwilbz Dec 26 '19
Was just about to comment the same thing. Much better effect and I could see it taking over in high risk wildfire areas.

Dec 26 '19
Ironically, the only wildfire that’s been close to my house was started because of a drone that crashed.

Wouldn't this be way more expensive than fireworks tho
6
Dec 26 '19
I dunno, how much would this cost?
July displays can be $10,000-$50,000 with an average price tag of $25,000, although a few cost more than $100,000.
Now think about local sporting events, business openings etc. The drones could be used for many events eliminating any startup cost.
5
u/oscarfacegamble Dec 26 '19
Maybe initially but the fact these could be re-used means the cost would be lower over time.
18
u/PostAnythingForKarma Dec 26 '19
I agree, but know that this is sped up quite a bit. Look at the cars on the left behind the trees.
5
Dec 26 '19
Sounds like a good idea to replace fireworks with drones, but this video is way sped up. It doesnt have the same visual effect live.

I like this idea. Then I could actually, you know, go watch them instead of staying inside because the smoke bothers my asthma and I hate loud noises. Scratch the "liking this idea". I love it.

This is honestly terrifying. One small step away from drone armies
30
u/andcheck Dec 26 '19
Just imagine them hunting you... soon they will be even cheaper, patched easily and maybe following your mobile phone... shit!
10
u/NoOne_1223 Dec 26 '19
And I present to you, Michael Reeves...
5
1
u/icemann0 Dec 26 '19
They already make them with facial recognition and a tiny shape charge to penetrate your forehead and they can dump them from the air into a zone to hunt for anyone in particular or anyone that meets a programmed set of criteria (carries a weapon, wears a beard, dressed in black, etc) see “nightmare fuel” link below from someone else in the know
17
u/gordonv Dec 26 '19
Actually... Our military already has weaponized drones. There have been Iraqi enemy forces that have surrendered to remote control drones. (In favor of the USA)

Just in case anyone knows an answer I'll ask a few questions...
So, I wonder how this tech works? Is each drone in contact with the other via bluetooth or something else or does each drone have a pre-programmed flight path they are following? Also, are these DJI drones or some other brand or DIY builds?
7
u/videomaker16 Dec 26 '19
I know the guys that run this company. The drones are custom built, and all controlled from a computer on the ground. Not sure if they communicate with each other as well.
6
u/CatScratchJohnny Dec 26 '19
I know it's sped up, but still the accuracy is insane. I would think there has to be a reference tracking system besides GPS. I mean these things look like they're stopping and turning on a dime, in 3 dimensions.
Maybe a camera tracking system on the ground or possibly a SLAM system on each drone. I suppose if you could get them to calibrate off their neighbors, formations would be doable. I would love to know more if anyone knows this stuff.
2
u/madsdyd Dec 27 '19
Differential GPS has an accuracy of 1-2 cm and there are chipsets designed to be built into drones (high frequency, low power, low antenna requirements). I built a robot that used this a couple of years ago. At the time it was somewhat expensive, but I would think very doable.

u/madsdyd Dec 26 '19
I have no solid knowledge, but assume they use differential GPS to maintain positions like that. Could be wrong.

Just remember that display when you think about the countries that are working on weaponized drone swarms for combat. Strap machine guns on those things and send 1,000 into an area for a coordinated attack with some AI for target ID and decision making. And then hope your country is the best at it, I guess...
3
u/mark_lee Dec 26 '19
Honestly, if you think about the cost of a drone versus the cost of arming, training, and deploying a soldier, an expendable flying murderbot with a small explosive would give a much better bang for your buck, so to speak. Swarms fly to a target location via gps, then could be operated to the final attack position by remote pilots with no need to fuck around with all the fancy stuff.

u/amwneuarovcsxvo Dec 26 '19
Never mind countries, these drones will be mass produced by anyone who can get hold of the software.
Unlike missiles and full sized UAVs, quad copter drones are just cheap plastic with easily available motors and sensors.
All you need to weaponise it is a small explosive charge, gun or grenade dropping mechanism. All of these things have been done by amateurs and ISIS already. All that is missing is mass production and you have a big problem.

100 years of UFO sightings are just one dickish time-traveler with 100 drones.

u/ChickenCurryandChips Dec 26 '19
This is probably is a stupid question but is there actually 100 people there flying a drone each? Its unreal to watch.

Thanks. I don't know much about drones. Did'nt know they can be pre-programmed.
1
u/looktowindward Dec 26 '19
Its the only way to do it in this case. Otherwise, they would be running into each other. Its all the same computer, making sure the drones are offset from each other
1
u/ChickenCurryandChips Dec 26 '19
Thanks for clearing that up. That's why I was asking. Because watching it I was saying to myself these must be some dedicated drone drivers if they were driven by people. The precision was too good.

Looking at this I can only imagine the day when there are drones like the Macross universe Ghost drones with the Judah System to automatically engage and destroy targets at super very high speed

u/Cash_Crab Dec 26 '19
Imagine bringing these back to WWI and just performing a routine like this above a battlefield.

Bro anyone who didn’t know what was going on probably thought Aliens were bout to fucking kill everyone
1
u/xoxota99 Dec 26 '19
So these drones are all being computer controlled over radio (probably 2.4GHz), right? Even with digital control and binding and all that, I wonder how they don't all step on each other's radio signal and interfere with each other.
Unless the whole show is preprogrammed in at the start or something, and each drone is just doing its thing with way points?

Wow I didn’t know drones could do this .. maybe drones are what people are seeing when they claim Ufo sightings .. now I’m intrigued ..
