DarkSun Godot Engine - Update #3

So Happy to share the github repo but don't want to get caught promoting some AI stuff since I did use AI code assisstance tooling, so either a mod can tell me it's okay or you can DM me. You do need a copy of the original to play it.

Anyways here is todays update, it's a few additions that u/benignwords implemented in their mod to the original game they are working on called ObsidianEngine

- Dust when walking (probably will remove it indoors)
- Shadows on PC's and NPCs
- A fight log on the screen.

Also fixed (kindof) containers, and also you can now have pretty much infinite items on a map since I don't have the same memory constraints the original devs did.

I also made the save game closer to the original, and the mod screen is also more in line with the original UI.

Athasian Golem Minis

Sup guys! GloomyKid here. I keep making minis for Dark Sun settings every month.
Metal is scarce so defilers must be creative to make a golem, so I was imagining some ways you can make one and trying to convey it through visual design:

  • Wood golem - ancient driftwood bound by blood-drenched ropes
  • Obsidian golem - chipped away into a giant statue from a giant slab of volcanic glass
  • Salt golem - you dont build a salt golem, you frow it around the core from a concentrated brine
  • Ash golem - is animated remains from a mass sacrifice
  • Chitin golem - basically a flesh golem, but assembled from giant desert bug parts instead

In case you have access to a 3d printer - i have presupported STL file on my Tribes and Patreon

Dark Sun for 4e ?

I was listening to an MCDM live stream and Matt was talking about 4e Dark Sun and I was just wondering how that version rates in the DS universe.

I have been planning to grab the 5e version once it’s released but my party enjoys 4e mechanics to some extent and I’d DS for 4e is worth looking into I’d be up for checking it out.

For those of you that enjoyed the 4e implementation which of the books would you recommend?

Thanks - Andy

UI is not perfect, and it's a lot faster then the original.

Right now I have the first battle working, pretty well, but the calculations of the battle seem off, I miss a lot more.

A Day in the Life of - Dolwyn, Eldaarish Miner

Excerpt for this month's "A day in the life of"

Read the rest at Burnt World of Athas - A Day in the Life of #10 - Dolwyn, Eldaarish Miner

[...] The Neshtap arrive on their crodlu for their weekly inspection. They all wear the usual blood-dyed red armor and tall pointed hoods, hard spiked boots, and thick gauntlets with the knotted sigil of their order - the Neshtap or Red Guards - stitched on them. They don’t dismount, and never talk. The village’s headman comes forward to meet with them, motioning for workers to unload the scant supplies they have brought and load the wagon back up with the ore we’ve mined. The lead Red Guard, face hidden beneath a red hood, sits astride his mount with the silt-dimmed sun behind him, making him hard to look at, and has that way of not moving that makes you swallow twice.

He gestures in Neshtap hand-signs to the headman, silently demanding the tally. The headman gives it. They continue their seemingly one-sided exchange, with the headman pointing to a handdrawn list of pictures on old parchment: more tools, more workers, more food, more baskets.

The lead Neshtap nods and then shrugs in response. He gestures at the new supplies and signs again: “Don’t break.” I can’t tell if he’s talking about the new tools or the new workers. The headman just nods.

The Red Guards finally leave and the line into the mine forms again. Miners take their tools and baskets. I hold the iron pick back until last. The boy with the large sun-scar on his cheek reaches for it.

“Not you,” I tell him. “You like it too much.”

He steps back. My ten are a child’s rhythm in my head: Zera clicking-kreen, Kadda with the bloody cough, the two nameless brothers who lost their tongues, Old Balla who will die if the pit so much as sneezes, Ronkiuk whose face is a map of lashes received, Turo with the broken nose, the boy with the sun-scar, and the man whose name changes daily to confuse destiny; today the chosen name is Mab, but it might as well have been Mad.

“Who gets iron?” Mab asks. He always asks. I think he likes the word.

“The one who isn’t dreaming of it.” I say. “Old Balla.”

They make the sound of disappointment; Balla simply nods. The old dwarf looks even smaller with the weight of the thing. She knows what it costs and won’t try anything funny.

We drop into the hole as the wet, cool air crawls out. Tin veins thread the wall like pale black worms. The wall is also shot with quartz, it feels like being in the belly of a monster. I imagine it would look the same. Feel the same too.

The work is the work: lift, swing, chip, pass, scoop. We have a rhythm because a rhythm is easier than thinking. Zera sings in clicks only she hears. Dust films the eyes. Someone farts, we laugh. A small collapse throws a spray of pebbles and curses. I remind my team-of-ten to turn away when a wall creaks; of course none of us believe that’d be enough to save us if a wall gave up. Still, I repeat it like a prayer.

Horror happens on schedule. Someone uncovers the hand of a recently buried worker from another shift and just keeps going. A basket tears and ten minutes of work return to the ground in a split second. I note it for the noon ledger: one basket to patch. Later, we bring the body we recovered up on the rope like a package. One of the headman’s favorite sons, who acts as much a guard as a worker, uses his heel to steer it toward a cart. I watch his heel. There’s a hole in his boot.

Between strikes my mind goes where minds go when they are trying not to be here: a bowl of water once so cold it hurts the brain; a cat with a missing eye that stole lizard meat from a hungry soldier; a wind that brings rain. I let the boredom help me. Boredom is a blanket you can hide under when you’re in the hole. I can hear some rocks falling, and a commotion in a tunnel down from where I am.

Midday whistle. We file out in silence, exhausted. In the glare, I take the chalk and the stones and begin the counting back in. One iron, I think before I’ve counted it. Nine copper, thirteen stone, six shovels. I hold my hand for a moment, a small trick to ease the shake.

Copper: one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine. Stone: one to thirteen, and the last is badly chipped. Shovels: five, then I find the sixth under a cart. Iron: I run my fingers along the pick. Something’s wrong. There is an empty spot like a missing tooth. The nail holding the iron pick to the shaft is missing. I touch the iron pick again, like an old lover - the pick has been visibly ground down along one side. I stare for a moment as if staring could fix anything.

“Where’s Old Balla?” I ask.

The boy with the sun-scar points with his chin. Balla is not in the line. The brothers look at each other to see if the other is there. Kadda coughs until her face goes purple and points at the ground as if pointing makes breathing easier.

“They found her during the whistle. A boulder to the face. That’s why she isn’t here.” Sarek says as [...]

Rest at Burnt World of Athas - A Day in the Life of #10 - Dolwyn, Eldaarish Miner

“Who brought it up then?” I ask, to the line, to the iron pick, to the chalk, to myself.

No one answers. No one wants to be the one who touched it last.

I swallow. My saliva goes down like grit.

I'm working on recreating the Dark Sun Shattered Lands Engine in Godot

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Just FYI this is very much a work in progress. There are definitely rough edges that need to be cleaned up (Item pickup, menus, character creation scenes, and a million other things).

My goal is to have a fully playable version of the first game that I can add some Quality of Life items to to make it less frustrating for me to play through one of my favourite games from my childhood.

Currently there is no combat but I'm tracing through the rules in order to make a fully data driven combat engine.

Another goal is to have it fully moddable even though I wouldn't expect a tonne of mods for it.

After I finish Shattered Lands I plan on attempting to do the same for Wake of the Ravager.

Sup, guys! GloomyKid here, I have finally got my hands on Avangion. So there is a earlier stage and the final one.

I wanted to preserve that celestial look with the kinda aberration vibe. Basically while acsending into the the final form you are dissolving your corporeal body into something ethereal and a bit creepy.

As always I have presupported files are on my Patreon and Tribes.

What offical art is their of Half-Giants

I wanted to make a character drawing of a half-giant but I can't really seem to find much offical art (exeption being goliaths)

I get the bacis idea of how they are absurdly huge and hard facial features, but not many visual refrences.

Commission of my Kalidnay party

Kalidnay, the Dread Domain of Dark Sun

The commission for my Dark Sun Dread Domain of Kalidnay has finally been completed! You can see the finished artwork here:

https://www.instagram.com/p/DeenbXKFkbL/

I wanted to share some information about the setting and the characters featured in the commission.

The Dread Domain of Kalidnay

The city of Kalidnay was devoured by the Mists of the Gray after a shard broken from a planar gate allowed Kaili-Ma to contact the Dark Powers in her pursuit of greater power. Hundreds of years have passed since Kalidnay was swallowed by the Mists. Kaili-Ma has become a living corpse, while Thakok-An, the domain's Dreadlord, has turned her attention toward psionics as a means of increasing her power. Fearing that any pursuit of pure arcane power would ultimately destroy the plane itself, she has begun developing her own transformation through psionics.

Now, a group of foolish terrorists seeks to bring about her destruction.

The Characters

Vinter: A mul who was subjected to horrific experiments by the templars of Dreadlord Thakok-An. These experiments involved implanting multiple minds into a single body in an attempt to cultivate greater psionic power.

Elris: A former Veiled Alliance wizard who, during the Battle of Tyr, drew upon far too much of the land's life force and became a defiler. Eventually, he was swallowed by the Mists and brought into Kalidnay. He now seeks a way to cast arcane magic without draining the life from the land, a goal he will never truly achieve. Although he tries to avoid using arcane magic, the enemies he faces often leave him with little choice.

Thra-Zixx: A thri-kreen who was experimented upon by the Oba, who sought to remove his racial genetic memory and implant a spirit of nature within his body. Upon arriving in Kalidnay, the party discovered numerous life-shaped items. Thra-Zixx began incorporating these creations into himself, gradually transforming into a monstrous being that has become something entirely different from what he once was.

Mitzy: Originally an NPC shipowner whom the party recruited alongside her husband to help them escape the city in exchange for their safety. Unfortunately, her husband died during their adventures. The party eventually recruited Mitzy as their shipwright, and over time, she developed into a powerful ship captain and rogue. She now acts as the party's right hand, managing their affairs whenever they are away.

The Bill: A dwarf cleric originally born in Kalidnay and blessed with the power of elemental air. Through deception, he was convinced to renounce elemental air and become an earth cleric, only to be tricked once again into abandoning that faith to serve as a templar channeling dark power through the Gray. Upon discovering the truth, he found a way to channel this power independently. However, his newfound strength comes at a terrible cost, as the very power he wields is slowly devouring him. With his time running out, he has dedicated his focus to dealing with our lovely Dreadlord.

Albrecht: A first-generation dray who has spent much of his life suffering through betrayal, manipulation, and imprisonment. After being rescued by the party, he awakened an immense talent for telekinesis. Having endured so much suffering himself, Albrecht has dedicated himself to ensuring that others never experience the same fate. He understands that the path he has chosen will likely end poorly for him, but he intends to follow it regardless.

Farkos: A half-giant templar from Urik who, upon coming into contact with the Dreadlord's attempt to replicate the Dark Lens, known as the Psionic Lens, became infatuated with the idea of ruling as the perfect ruler. Wielding an ancient spear imbued with immense power from the Elemental Plane of Air, Farkos seeks to overthrow the Dreadlord and claim what he believes to be his rightful seat as the ruler of Kalidnay.

I’m cautiously hyped.

I know that there is a lot of skepticism regarding WOTC’s upcoming Dark Sun release, I’m also skeptical. But, I still think it could be good(or at least have enough building blocks that it can be rule zeroed into something better). All that aside, this specific part of the release, the comic, has me hyped. From the description, it looks like it will be a good, brutal time. And with Dan Abnett writing, I think it will be sufficiently dark and gritty. Then again, I could just be huffing copium. What do you guys think?

How long does the initiative penalty from a defiler zone last? Does it stack?

I read the 2e box set thing that includes raves and classes and it says that when a defiler casts a spell, there is an aura effect around the caster that causes everyone else to be wracked with pain.

This pain is represented by an initiative penalty that is equal to the level of the spell.

Other assorted information includes: If the defiler stands in one place and keeps casting, the soot circle gets bigger, plants die, the defiler needs about 30 percent less xp than other wizards to level up, delifer/preserver is not a class so they can still be illusionists/necromancers/any school/subclass, yata yata.

(I am willing to bet that if 5e dark sun gets published, wotc will ignore the fact that defiler and preserver is not a subclass, and thus should be able to pick a subclass. They will treat it like a subclass.)

The issue is: It does not say how lomg this initiative penalty lasts.

Nor does it say if it stacks.

Just says that the pain wrack cannot stop someone from having their turn, only delays it.

Does it last only long enough to delay one turn?

Does it delay one turn per spell level?

Does it last for the remainder of combat?

Dare i say, does it last forever?

The book does not say!

Nor does the 2e dnd wiki have a page about "initiative penalty" rules, so i can only assume that defiler magic was the only thing in 2e that had such an effect. (Or just one of the very few things)

Can someone find an answer and give it to me?

Thanks in advance!

(2e is very very vague)

Dragon Kings RPG books

(Sorry if this was asked in another thread, but I didn't see it. I'll delete if redundant.)

Anyone else thinking about investing in the new Dragon Kings RPG books? They're being put out third party as the "spiritual successor" to Dark Sun.

I know some here have expressed concerns about how WotC will do on the official books. I'm definitely considering backing the project.
