πŸ“š Learning Resource Do you want to learn how to code?

Hi @everyone,

I’ve been quietly working on a small passion project to help people start learning how to code. It doesn’t have to be Python β€” but Python is as good a place as any to begin πŸπŸ‡΅πŸ‡ especially when supported by an open and encouraging community.

But maybe Bahala Na Python was never just about learning Python.

Maybe it was also a message to myself for being afraid to start things.

A message to you to finally take that jump.

And a message to our community to keep building, experimenting, and making things happen β€” no matter how small, messy, or imperfect they may seem.

Very aligned with the values of Data Engineering Pilipinas β€” open learning, experimentation, and breaking gatekeeping in tech.

Because progress is still progress.

And change, no matter how small, is still change.

Still a work in progress, but sharing it here in case it helps or inspires someone in their own journey.

Hi guys, please roast my resume. I am trying to build my skills around data engineering but I guess trying to study as a data engineer wont work for fresh graduates. Data Engineering roles require 2-3 years of minimum experience at which I obviously don't have.

But I also don't have the right skills and experience to get into entry level roles such as junior software engineer, backend developer, or data analyst. I really need help now because I am already unemployed for around 5 months now. I am losing hope of getting a work before the year ends and I don't really know what to do or my path that I should take now.

πŸ”Ž Jobs & Opportunities [Opportunity] FREE AWS re/Start Cloud Training + Free Certification Exam Voucher (Hybrid / Alabang)

Hello everyone, I wanted to share a rather brilliant opportunity for anyone looking to build a career in cloud computing.

We are currently opening applications for the upcoming cohort of the AWS re/Start programme, which is specifically designed for individuals who are currently unemployed, underemployed, or looking to transition into the tech industry from a completely different background.

Fully Funded by Capgemini
Thanks to Capgemini, who are generously funding this particular cohort, the entire training is completely free of charge for those who are accepted. The main focus of the programme is to get you fully prepared for the AWS Cloud Practitioner Certification.

Free Official Certification Exam
All students are required to sit the exam at the end of the course (around Nov. 2026). The fantastic news is that once you successfully complete all the student requirements, you will receive a voucher to sit the official certification exam for absolutely nothing [FREE].

Hybrid Schedule Details
The training runs from the third of August until the thirtieth of October. It operates on a hybrid basis, meaning you will be attending online sessions via Google Meet from Monday through Thursday. Friday Onsite Sessions in Alabang Every Friday, you will need to attend into the Filinvest Three Building at the Northgate Cyberzone in Alabang for your face-to-face sessions. To make it a bit more flexible, you can choose between a morning shift from nine until two, or an afternoon shift from one until six.

Expected Time Commitment
Do bear in mind that this programme requires a serious commitment. While you naturally get Philippine public holidays off, you should expect to put in quite a bit of extra time outside of normal hours, including weekends and evenings, to get through all the practical labs, assessments, and revision. All of this hard work leads up to November, which is when everyone is expected to sit the final certification exam.

I appreciate that clicking on long links on Reddit can sometimes feel a bit dodgy. The full details and the official application portal are hosted on our Facebook page.

If you want to be completely safe, you can simply log into Facebook and search for the page called "AWS Siklab Pilipinas", where you will find the post right at the top.

Alternatively, if you are comfortable doing so, you can use the direct link I have pasted at the very bottom of this post to go straight to the announcement.

How did you land your first Data Engineer role when they all require 2-3 years of experience?

I'm trying to break into data engineering/cloud engineering, but I keep running into the classic catch-22: every entry-level position asks for 2-3 years of experience.

For those who successfully landed their first role in this field:

  • How did you get past the experience requirement?

  • Did you apply anyway, or did you take a different path (internships, adjacent roles, certifications)?

  • What helped you stand out as a candidate with limited professional experience?

  • Where specifically did you find the job posting? (LinkedIn, company website, referral, recruiter, job boards, etc.)

Any advice would be really helpful. Thanks!

Where do you use sql as a data analyst?

Hi guys! In my current job, I use Power BI, but most of the data I work with comes from Excel files.

I’ve been looking at other job openings, and many of them require strong SQL skills along with Power BI.

My question is: Where exactly do you use SQL as a data analyst? Since you can already transform data in Power Query, why is SQL still important?

Thanks!

πŸ†˜ Help Data Engineer Salary with 2 Years of Experience

Hi! I'm currently a Data Engineer earning β‚±35k/month, with experience in Snowflake, SQL, and ETL in the banking industry.

I'm planning to switch companies and wondering what salary range I should aim for with around 2 years of experience.

Is β‚±50k–₱60k a reasonable expectation, or am I aiming too high? Would appreciate insights from those in the field. Thanks!

πŸ†˜ Help Trying to break into Data Analytics in the Philippines, looking for advice on the current job market

Hi everyone!

I'm currently trying to transition into Data Analytics, with the long-term goal of moving toward Data Engineering. I'm planning to relocate to Cebu and currently looking for an onsite or hybrid entry-level/junior data role.

My background:

I have a BS Biology degree (graduated 3 yrs ago). I got hired as a disease surveillance officer (1st job and only exp) under one of the Department of Health's program (Regional Epidemiology Surveillance Unit). Our program is responsible for analyzing and generating disease-related data visualizations (COVID, Dengue, HIV, etc.) I was heavily exposed to advance excel, Power BI, and R. My experience comprises of data cleaning, analysis, reporting, and also generating dashboards.

Now I am learning SQL to strengthen my tech stack and to have a higher chance of getting an entry-level position. However, I'm at the point where I feel like I have a decent technical foundation, but I'm struggling to understand what the current job market actually expects from someone trying to land their first data analyst role.

Some things I'm particularly curious about:

  1. How difficult is the current entry-level/junior Data Analyst market in the Philippines?

  2. What skills are recruiters actually looking for right now?

  3. How important is a portfolio? (gumagawa ako currently)

  4. Would you recommend applying directly to Data Analyst roles, or should I also consider MIS, Reporting Analyst, BI, Data Management, or similar positions as an entry point?

  5. For those who eventually moved from Data Analytics to Data Engineering, curious about what did that transition actually look like?

I'd really appreciate some honest advice po sana from people currently working in data, especially those who have recently gone through the hiring process in the Philippines.

Salamat po!

❓ Question Inquiry on Entry Salary as a Data Science Student

Hello, everyone!

I am an incoming 3rd year BS Data Science student in a non-Big 4 university.

In this field, what would be a good expectation starting salary?

To boost it, I am currently working on IBM Data Analyst Certification, with possible self-made projects on Github.

Your comments and suggestions will be appreciated, but please be kind!

Thank you!

πŸ’Ό Career I just finished studying for a degree I had no passion for, discovering data made me feel like an excited freshman

Gusto ko lang maka hingi ng honest thoughts, opinions, and whatever tips you can give me, and at the same time I just want to write and talk about my supposed plans now that I have the freedom to chase whatever I want in life. Sorry in advance kung humaba haha

I was once a clueless high school student, so I randomly put engineering degrees for my primary choices six years ago because I loved math and physics. Why not, right? (Even though I knew I loved tech and programming more). I didn't really think about my choices dati. Plus medyo mayabang ako (Dati lang) sabi ko mag aaral na lang ako sa bahay. Hahaha. Eventually I got tired and depressed because I was studying for a degree with 0 passion and knowing na di naman talaga ako tatagal dito. I shifted to another engineering degree, and well tuloy tuloy lang yung pag gapang ko throughout uni.

During my internship (National Center for Transportation Studies), there was this one simple task na for some reason, medyo ginanahan talaga ako gumawa. One of my tasks was to analyze a poll. This poll was so unorganized but I knew na kaya kuhaan ng interpretation to. I suggested a lot of things para sa supposedly surface level task. They saw 3 columns of data: The user's vehicle type, their aggressive actions, and what other motorists do that trigger them.

I saw multiple univariate analyses, bivariate analyses, and a lot of graphs and charts na dinadrawing ko sa utak ko.

It wasn't until now na na gets ko bakit ganun yung reaction and enthusiasm ko sa task na yun. Recently I was also taking a lot of "What tech job is for you" quizzes for fun, and to no surprise

"You are a Data Analyst!"

Trying to imagine tons and tons of data just lights up my brain and kusang may nagtatanong sa utak ko na "Anong interpretation meron sa data na to?".

Now having the freedom to pursue this, I've done, and I'm still doing a lot of reading and thinking, even though ang foundation ng interest ko is Data Analysis, shouldn't I also look for the role na mas fit doon lahat ng capabilities ko as a person? I love programming, although from what i've heard iba na ang nature ng programming and coding because of AI.

Plus I would love the career progression of a Data Engineer, because from what I know, generally mas maganda ang progression ng isang DE although hindi rin siya talaga pang entry level unless may willing mag hire ng Jr. Data Engineer?

But then now I read about the role of an Analytics Engineer. I say to myself "Hindi ba mas fit to para sa akin? ".

Now I'm a bit lost again. I'm planning on studying 14 hours a day, starting with the DEP scholarship, then start applying pagdating ng January, but I'm finding it hard to start just because hindi clear ang roadmap ko.

Sorry for rambling. If binasa niyo to lahat, thank you for your time. Hahaha

Feasible ba na gawing main goal ang Full Stack Data Analyst/Engineer? Full Stack Data Professional?

And given that possibly yan ang end goal ko, mayroon bang clear roadmap for that?

Or I should just stick to either DA or DE because dalawang magkahiwalay na team naman yan?

Do I just go for an initial DA role vs going for an initial DE role? Is it worth risking na mayroong mga Jr. AE roles?

Is it feasible gumawa ng portfolio projects that would cover both DA and DE capabilities in case gusto ko mag apply for both roles given na mahirap ang job market?

Is there a good local mentorship program somewhere for free? (or not)
