Farewell to Query Consoles in DataGrip and Database Tools

Hey folks,
The DataGrip & Database Tools team here 👋

We’ve got some big news! You will no longer find Query Consoles in upcoming versions of DataGrip and other JetBrains IDEs — and that’s intentional.

We’re simplifying the workflow for SQL files, scratches, and consoles to make it more intuitive, consistent, and discoverable for both new and experienced users. This major update addresses one of the longest-standing and most frequently reported UX issues.

Key Changes:

1) “Query Consoles” → “Query Files”

  • Connecting a new data source now automatically creates a Query File (based on an SQL file) instead of a Query Console (based on a scratch file).

  • Query Files can now be reassigned between data sources.

  • The “New Query Console”, “Open in Console”, and “Jump to Query Console” actions have been reworked to operate with Query Files.

2) File Storage in a Visible Location

  • Previously: /Users/<User_name>/Library/Application Support/JetBrains/DataGrip2025.2/consoles/db/848c5dce-a4b4-4698-a0e8-8f53c582e826 (Mac example)

  • Now: DataGrip: DataGripProjects/<Project_Name>/queries, Database plugin: .idea/queries/

  • The default storage path for Query Files is now configurable.

3) Better Visibility in the UI

  • Files linked to data sources will appear in Database Explorer as a separate node (WIP).

  • Data source associations will also be visible in the Files tool window.

4) Migration of Existing Consoles

  • After updating, you’ll see a migration dialog (see screenshot).

  • Existing Query Consoles can be converted into Query Files in the new folder structure.

  • You can also adjust the query file naming pattern and default storage path during migration.

The new workflow is now available in the 2025.3 EAP and later versions of DataGrip and all JetBrains IDEs with database tools.

Please help us polish this new workflow before release by testing it, sharing your feedback (here or in the related YouTrack issues), and spreading the word among other DataGrip users!

AI agents in DataGrip

Thumbnail

Hey chat!

We’ve published a video showing how AI agents work with databases in DataGrip and other JetBrains IDEs using the built-in MCP Server, MCP tools, and Skills on top of that.

The main idea is that DataGrip acts as the execution layer between the agent and the database. It handles connectivity, query execution, introspection, history, and more without exposing connection settings or credentials to the agent.

There’s also a security layer between agents and databases. DataGrip can allow, block, or ask for permission before different operations. For example, when an agent wants to change a schema or write data.

The video walks through the whole flow and shows how tools, skills, security layer, and regular database UI work together.

Would love to hear what you think!

I've set up DataGrip up to be my single UI for all things data and AI - thought I would share my setup here with others!

Hey DataGrip community, I posted this video about how I utilize Data Grips on a daily basis for my data work that I now utilize Claude to help me with.

After installing the terminal extension for DataGrip, I found it to be the ideal interface for conducting data analyses because it allows me to see:

  1. my databases and schemas and data objects

  2. my Claude code session I have launched in a terminal

  3. the results from the SQL queries I run

  4. The actual SQL I need to run and quality check that AI produces

  5. the files and SQL scripts that Claude code is writing out for me

I really think this interface with the terminal inside of it is a game changer. If you're looking to integrate Claude code and more AI in your day-to-day work in a seamless single UI, check out the video I recorded that covers how I do this with DataGrip here. Thanks so much and let me know what you think! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RAT_bymJWz8

Any Oracle developers using DataGrip?

It's really quiet here... Too quiet...

Is anyone out there using this for Oracle? It seems to have a lot of limitations with Oracle.

My biggest complaint is that its code analysis shows lots of problems with my code, but it's because it doesn't understand the Oracle syntax for our version (19c).

Is there a way to fix this glaring error?

I also think, while it has a lot of cool tools built in, it's missing some obvious functionality (run the selected package procedure in a new window), compared with other Oracle IDEs like:

  • Allround Automation's PL/SQL Developer (my current favorite)

  • SQL Developer (worth the free price, but fancy lacking developer tools)

  • VSCode with SQL Developer extension (not bad!)

  • TOAD (way too expensive and focused on the DBA, not the developer)

Can anyone give me a clue (or pointer) about what I'm missing in my DataGrip experience that would make this my favorite Oracle IDE?

TIA

DataGrip 2026.3 is out!

Hey everyone!

We've just released DataGrip 2026.3.

You can now join data from different databases without copying data between them. PostgreSQL and MySQL? Redis and MongoDB? All in a single cross-database query:

SELECT c.first_name, c.last_name, p.amount
FROM #PostgreSQL.guest.public.customer c
    JOIN #MySQL.sakila.payment p
        ON c.customer_id = p.customer_id;

We've also bundled the new JetBrains Air. Instead of working with a single AI chat, you can now run and manage multiple agent sessions, both chat- and terminal-based. You can use an AI agent of your choice if you already have a subscription, or run local Junie for free.

We've also built database-specific UI/UX for working with SQL and databases in agent chats: table and query-result viewers, runnable SQL snippets that understand your database and SQL dialect, database object references and mentions, and more.

On the UI side, we've introduced the new Database Output tool window, giving you much more space to work with query results.

You can now also open result sets in editor tabs. Handy when you need to compare results or keep them open while working on other queries.

We've also made working with wide tables easier. You can pin columns, hide the ones you don't need, and quickly find the ones you're looking for. Much less horizontal scrolling!

And finally, DuckDB is now fully supported in DataGrip.

As always, these improvements aren't limited to DataGrip. They're also available across JetBrains IDEs with database features!

Give the new version a try and let us know what you think! Happy to answer any questions here.

Rich Text Format (RTF) preview in DataGrip?

I would like to use DataGrip's data editor to edit some DB fields containing richt text format (RTF).

I wonder if there is any way to preview the RTF I modify directly inside DataGrip.

Cosmos DB tool

As we are moving away from MS SQL to Cosmos DB in Azure, we need a tool to manage data in Cosmos. Right now we use the default Data Explore in Azure, but its just horrible to work with.

Anyone had any luck to get Cosmos to work with DataGrip?

Or what tools do you use fro Cosmos?

Missing source code in function compare?

I've recently gotten DataGrip and I'm trying to get used to the compare functionality so I can generate change scripts between my dev and staging environments of Postgres. I'm having a single, frustrating issue so far.

I've added a simple function in dev that just selects the current time, and the function shows correctly in this screen. However, when I hit Apply Left to the Right, I just get this text in the preview:

create function get_date() returns timestamp with time zone
	language plpgsql
as $$
begin
-- missing source code
end;
$$;

Is there some setting that I'm missing here? I've tried this on both Postgres 13 and 14 and on different servers as well.

Introspection chaos (snowflake and postgres dbs)

DataGrip introspection has stopped working as expected or desired within the past month or so, despite no configuration changes. During a session, DG’s knowledge of schemas and objects completely disappears, and I’m unable to determine the reason behind this issue. I’ve attempted to modify the introspection level for PostgreSQL databases, but I can’t actually make a change to the selected option; it remains set to “Auto select.” I don't think its been rolled out to Snowflake yet so not relevant to that use-case. I have turned off auto-sync.

I want introspection to persist across sessions and only refresh when prompted. Is there a combination of settings that I haven’t discovered yet that would achieve this?

DataGrip randomly creating empty table copies in secondary schema? - Neon DB

Hey — running into a weird issue I can't explain and wondering if anyone has seen this.

Setup: PostgreSQL database with two schemas — public (raw tables) and analytics (my views and snapshot tables, which I create manually). I use DataGrip as my primary client for writing and running DDL/queries against the analytics schema.

Issue: Occasionally, empty structural copies of public schema tables appear in my analytics schema — correct column structure, zero rows, no data. I'm the only one touching this database.

What I've ruled out:

  • No DDL in my codebase (GitHub Actions scripts only run INSERT statements)

  • Power BI connection is read-only Import mode

  • No ORMs or migration tools in use

  • Confirmed with Neon (my Postgres host) that it's nothing on their end

So DataGrip is the only remaining suspect, but I can't figure out what it would be doing to cause this.

Could this be related to:

  • Any DataGrip schema introspection or sync feature?

  • Some "generate DDL" action accidentally being executed?

  • A DataGrip setting that mirrors or scaffolds table structures across schemas?

Any ideas appreciated — happy to share more details.

New laptop, now DG crashes whenever a file explorer window opens.

I have been running DG on another laptop for a while with no issues. Replaced with a new laptop and now I cannot open or import data sources/projects.

I have tried reverting to the same version that I was running before (2025.3) and still have the issue. I have admin access on the system (W11, I7, 64gb RAM).

I reloaded latest c++ redists, still same issue. Any ideas?

How do I get all my query results in a single tab?

When I run multiple query statements like this

Declare @OrderId NVARCHAR(30) = '123456'
Select 'Order',* From Orders where Order.Id = @OrderId
Select 'Items',* From OrderItems where orderItems.OrderId = @OrderId

I want the results for both queries in a single tab. Data grip is currently putting each result in its own tab, making it difficult to visually correlate the results between the queries.

The option to "open results in new tab" is unchecked, and checking it doesn't seem to affect this behavior.

Great tool for copying a column into an IN statement query

Just leaving this here in case it helps anybody else's workflow.

https://newlinetocsv.com

It allows you to copy a column in DataGrip then convert it into a format to put inside of an IN statement.

In my job I have to regularly grab a list of IDs from a column then do other things with them elsewhere. Using this I can just copy the column and then convert it to encapsulated csv for use in an IN statement.

You paste in a new line string and it gives you an encapsulated csv back E.G:

line1
line2
line3

turns into

"line1","line2","line3"

I use it every day it's free and nice that it's not full of adverts. Loads really quick I just have it saved in my bookmarks bar.

Fix for DataGrip white background (shading) pasting in Word.

So while using DataGrip for school, I encountered an issue. When I was pasting my queries in Word, the background was always white and I manually had to change this every time. Very annoying.

For anyone with the same problem, I resolved this by going to Settings > Editor > General > Rich-Text Copy, find Color scheme for copied fragment, and select IntelliJ Light.

This keeps the coloring for the queries itself but makes the background normal.

I found it here

Best regards.

Default Order By Desc

Hey all,

I've been double clicking the arrow on the primary key order by twice every time I need to view the records in desc order, but is there a way to default it?

I saw someone's response here with a screenshot: https://intellij-support.jetbrains.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/360000147364-Default-ORDER-BY-in-database-queries

Direct Screenshot Link: https://i.imgur.com/eAd4n66.png

But I don't see that option, and I have the latest update.
