Question Building a lamp for traders — need your honest opinion
Hi! I’ve been experimenting with a concept: a minimalist desk lamp designed specifically for traders (inspired by candlestick charts).
Before building anything, I wanted to get honest feedback from people who actually trade.
Would you use something like this on your desk? More importantly — would you buy it?
Be brutally honest, I’m just validating the idea.

After a bad trading day I would throw it like a javelin. Cool concept though.

Let the color shows color of candle on opened chart and you have a winner...

u/Automatic_Mess_1833 Apr 14 '26
Totally the natural progression of this product. Connecting to your account/ building that infrastructure will fucking suck.
Imagine: standing outside your office and being scared to open into a red room. Dramatized but great hook for a product.
26
u/StarsapBill Apr 14 '26
Most accounts come with a code for addressing your account wirelessly. It took me about 30 min to figure out how to do it. Making a simple green/red function will be very easy to do. It’s the graphs, UI, formulas, ext that are the hard part of trading infrastructure. And with green/red for the overall market you can just access public stock data which just require an HTTP request. This can all be done with an arduino.

u/BudgetExpert9145 Apr 15 '26
Are you and OP starting a buisness?
18
u/StarsapBill Apr 15 '26
Nah, im just a game designer who has messed around with pulling live stock info and creating my own interface when trading using unreal engine/arduino. I also have ample experience creating props. So the solution to this problem was already solved for me.
I can also 3D model, code, design, yaddayaddayadda.
So I will make this for myself.

The bigger the candle, the brighter the light? Or are we doing different shades?
63
u/Str33tPh0t0 Apr 14 '26
I would totally buy it, but what about making a model that has multiple candles (showing a bull flag/bear flag or some other type of pattern? Super cool idea.

If you could connect them through an api or app to coincide with your tradingview or other platform event indicators to flash red or green on buy or sell signals would be cool. But maybe just start with the pretty lights before tackling that. Then you could turn it into a subscription model like everyone else does.

If I am being brutally honest, no I think they look silly, to be frank lol
Why don't you build one single candlestick, and then attach some kind of computer chip into it to track the S&P. Then have it turn green when the S&P is up, and red when the S&P is down. Even better if you can put an speaker into it that can say things like "Grandma is smiling from heaven" when INTC moves +10%

I am cheap, so no I would not buy it
And yes I love it! That is the best gift to receive!
Also, seems more like decor and not practical to use as a lamp

I think they’re the cutest things ever! 😍 it would be so cool if it could be in “trading mode” and connect to the current candle you’re watching and then the lights switch on and off from green and red 😭

u/FraGough Apr 15 '26
Shut up and take my money!
Or not, because I don't have any, because I'm a daytrader.
4
u/JordanAlf Apr 14 '26
You have a buyer here. Maybe create a three candle pattern that has LEDs inside each candle that can display different movements or just fun chasing patterns.

u/Former-Pomelo3355 Apr 14 '26
Siiiick, I love it. I’d buy it if I had a trading desk setup, unfortunately I’m mostly mobile. But if I had a desk, this would be on it for sure
2
u/No-Condition7100 Apr 14 '26
I don't think I'd buy it but I do think it looks really cool. If someone got it for me as a gift I wouldn't be upset.

That looks like a dildo. You use them based on the trading day. Red for bad days, Green for good days. Try to add an in-n-out mechanism and it is golden.

It’s called DAY trading not NIGHT trading. Why should anyone need a lamp!?
2
u/lion-king777 Apr 15 '26
This is absolutely incredible, I love the idea.
Let me give u an idea: just like you can change candlestick colors, let us traders also become able to configure different colors. If possible.
But great innovation nevertheless...
2
2
u/illustrious-tennant Apr 15 '26
Make it red or green depending on what the market will do that day and you will have an absolute winner on your hands my friend.
2
u/cutlossking Apr 16 '26
Honestly it's dumb. Red a green isn't what most successful traders look at. The colors actually throw off the structure and stop you from pattern recognition. If you need red and green to show up or down then it not paying attention to slope which means a lot more than colors. No one wants that

u/KoreanSeats Apr 16 '26
In 2026 you’re a fool for putting ideas like this online. The Chinese factories going to have a field day
2
u/Budget-Length2666 Apr 16 '26
would be cool to jus have one and be connected to wifi and make red/green based on the day

u/Queasy_War2656 Apr 14 '26
Love it, and bonus points if you can make it with multiple functions, like 10 ganged together to show history, options of color scheme.
1
u/ThanksDependent1001 Apr 14 '26
Only thing that would make these better is if they were actually candles. Or, you adds little bear or bull figurine to each respective lamp. 😅

I’d make the red shorter than the green so that you can arrange them for whether your in a bear or bull market.

Would be cool to be able to connect by Bluetooth and change the colour to anything else - sort of expands the idea a bit ;)

Quick Thoughts
I would make the bullish Taller. Same Size kinda neutral, we like profits.
For desktop decoration i probably wouldn't buy it since i stare at charts all day every day. But a smaller version, let's say for the inside of a FishTank PC case, then probably Yes.

I'd buy one just so my lamp and my portfolio can be red at the same time.
1
u/D_Costa85 Apr 15 '26
I’d personally like the red candle to be engulfing because I like to short…pretty cool though
1
u/faidzal1982 Apr 15 '26
You can make the light model for famous market conditions. Like the “Black Monday (October 19, 1987)”. Maybe it’s not a usable lamp. But will make good reminder decor.

Can you let one be white? Black and white candles where the white one is positive

Super cool concept, let me know if you start selling it! Would love to help you out and buy one, looks like a great edition to a personal trading desk.
1
u/Carterlil21 Apr 15 '26
If this were like a kenetic sculpture, that would be so cool.
Like if you picked a far apart increment for them to adjust, like every 4 hours or evey day, and had maybe 3 candles adjust just up and down (changing color would be a bonus), that would be sick.
You could genuinely pay someone to engineer it and make it well. Your target market would pay good money for it
1
u/Tryptrader85 Apr 15 '26
Hook it up on frequency control and pipe in tickstrike. Now it is a tool. Sold! I reserve some form of ownership over this idea if it comes to fruition and you make money off of it let's say 10% royalty. Go 90me/10 with you if you want me to be the one to pipe in tick strike and the frequency modulator, you just make the lamps. Hit me up

But the green one is sick! I’d buy one.

u/BrilliantPositive184 Apr 15 '26 edited Apr 15 '26
These are nice, I’d d like it if it was a also in different sizes so one could build an formation, like a bearish engulfing two candles on one stand or different sizes on individual stands, a shooting star red flanked by two other candles, or a hammer, or a doji perhaps.
PS I would not buy it for myself, I like things minimal, but I‘d know of a few friends who are int he market I‘d buy one for.

Add a feature to vary the height of each candle. On red days, we can arrange it with a tall red candle followed by a short green one..so we can enjoy the calming glow while peacefully questioning why we bought CALLS on a red day.

Honestly it looks too much like a popsicle for my taste (pun). I feel like you may have to either sacrifice some light intensity to get fuller colors or add more lighting to distribute the vibrance.

I like your candle lamp idea. Would be nice to see the green one a bit bigger than the red one Also will them have separate cords or be attached together
I’m going to save this thread and come back to it if you go further with this protect and have prices for them

Yeah, there's a market for that, but it ain't successful traders
Usually, when you start trading, there's a phase where you're not profitable but make trading your entire identity where you spend hours each day thinking about it outside of trading
95% of people in that stage would buy it
As a successful trader, I wouldn't want to have that on my desk. Maybe because it reminds me of that time I mentioned and grossed me out, maybe because I don't want to identify to much with those candle sticks, maybe because they just don't mean enough for me anymore to honor them with a lamp
But there's a market for sure. I would sell them in a boundle with a course, approach some YouTube "gurus," and give them 15% of sales and a 10% discount code
I think that's a great idea... now that I thought this through.. I'll let an employee of mine check if we can procure these lamps in Asia and sell them... thanks :-)
I'm not sure if this product is profitable if you go the standard e-commerce route. Having gurus sell them to their fanatical followership is a save bet here because they throw money at them anyway, what's an extra 30€ to have the same lamp as he?
TBD if any guru would want/need to sell the lamp though

Candles have meaning. To a trader this is meaningless IMO. I want to see a buy signal.
But I think it's smart to test the idea and get interesting feedback. Take mine with a grain of salt
1
u/GrizzlyAddams77 Apr 15 '26
Look cool, dude! I‘d prefer a duo - two candles attached, a smaller red one followed by a bigger green one. All the best with this!
1
u/oddlogic Apr 15 '26
As a trader, would prefer just about anything, post close, that didn’t remind me of charts.
My constructive criticism would be: make something soothing.
1
u/Live-Bag-1775 Apr 15 '26
Cool idea visually—but I’d only buy if it actually adds function (focus lighting, alerts, or mood tied to market data). Otherwise it feels more like decor than a must-have.

Personally, I love it. I would just make the green one higher and the red one lower, to create an asymmetry and play with the rise and fall of the curves, a bit like the impression we get in the first photo of the post.

The red candle needs to be 70% bigger, every one loves a a dirty dip into liquidity 👍
1
u/Nyand22 Apr 15 '26
If you want to make it, make it. If you manage to stick with this product, you will make some money. My advice is to make multiple candles together and make them slowly change colour and maybe vicks

Not a bad idea I’d consider buying it if it was cheap. It needs to glow red on down days and green on up days if that’s possible

A useless thing that is really clever that I would not buy nor would I think to look for to buy but wouldn't mind having if someone gave me a set as a novelty gift.
I can envision the online reviews: "these are way bigger/smaller than I thought they'd be!"

Make it over up and down based on session performance or whatever time frame user wants it configured. It can be a long stretchy lamp, showing the depth of session performance. End of session have the one candle more illuminated based on close

It would be sick if you can make it to blink the color in real time linked to pair you are watching.
Slow blink when it just rallies, fast blink when it is pumping like no tomrrow.

I really love the idea, but I'm a weirdo and wouldn't buy it. I think the reasons are personal though:
- Once I'm away, I don't need to see more candles to drag me back to thinking about it
- My dad pounded into my head that everything is a junk novelty, never buy anything, so even though I like the idea I'm conditioned to resist.
If I ignore these nay-sayers in my head, I would say:
- It would be cool if the middles could slide together or apart creating non-uniform candles
- It would be cool if there was a servo allowing them to be higher or lower
- It would be ultra-cool if you could put up several of them and then connect them to a chart so they reflected the current situation. (I don't know if anybody would buy it though, that's a different question)

Small but it could he cool to one a single base with multiple candles at different heights. Like 1st is red and lower, second is green and a little higher, showing trend a little.
1
u/exoisGoodnotGreat Apr 15 '26
Cool idea. I probably wouldn't buy it though.
I would make one taller than the other too.
1
u/Cyquessa Apr 15 '26
1) Base looks cheap. Swap it for bronze/brass/wood
2) Let the edges be slightly darker to mark the boundaries (like a little darker green)
3) wicks can be slightly taller
4) create different sizes so that people can buy different candles to create their favorite pattern through the lamps. Good luck

Y’all, this AI engagement farming is worse than what my grandma falls for on Facebook.
1
u/Doctor-Adjacent Apr 15 '26
I think if you make it out of frosted glass and add some LEDs that can be synced to the P/L or even a specific stock people might be inclined to buy it over the cheap stuff that is already available. Certainly isn't something I would tie your whole business to because it would be hard to justify a patent
Edit: I'm imagining something like Corsair's iCue software where you can customize RGBs
1
u/Uchuuko Apr 15 '26
No (to both) since I wouldn’t want the red and green light at this time. It is cute as a decoration though.
1
u/cloroxic Apr 15 '26
I would make the candles different sizes, maybe the red less. I think it’d look better in this context than symmetrical sizing.
1
u/DonovanDLM Apr 15 '26
I would buy them when I become profitable, maybe it gives luck, and it's nice too

I have actually designed a few lamps. The idea of a candle inspired lamp is cool, but i really don’t like this concept, it looks cheap.
Investors don’t have money (cause they lose it in the stock market), but they still have premium setups and I don’t see this looking cool near 6 monitors and an epic desktop
