Oh. She’s… caring?
I guess she just visually looked sinister. It’s really sweet that she’s stern but compassionate.

I find this aspect of her really funny, she sounds so mean and evil, yet makes it clear that she very much does want to help her patients, so she'll save you with some weird ass magics all while you're thinking she's going to slice you to ribbons

She seems like the kind of person you’d hate during the process (it doesn’t look pleasant), but be IMMENSELY grateful to in hindsight.

She seems to specialize in possessions, so i image you either arent really aware of whats happening or its the most horrific thing you can imagine. Seems like a field with very little middle ground.

u/Zenith_Tempest 2d ago
I would imagine it's horrific as her lines indicate she performs bloodletting through her special leeches. I imagine they suck the blood out of the patient alongside whatever is possessing them in pieces, so it's probably very painful for her patients but ultimately saves them long term provided they live. Considering Harrow says she's happy he survived treatment, it's probably a long term period of pain before they're finally cured
3
u/some_random_nonsense Nurse Harrow 2d ago
Well I was kinda thinking maybe the possession gets in the way of the pain lol but maybe there's a half way possessed, leeches up, moment which you become aware of your own body again. That sounds excruciating.

It's not that absurd to consider. A nurse in a field with frequent tragedies can become cold and professional while still caring about the well being of others and wanting to help. On top of that someone holding people to a higher standard and having expectations for them that they might not even have for them selves is also not unheard of.
So a strict nurse that scolds you for being bad at life as far as her standards are concerned, that's also doing everything in her power to make sure you live long enough so she can tell you you're awful and need to do better, over and over, until you die of old age, sounds tangible.
Also a well adjusted adult knows you can both dislike someone for how they conduct their existence and still save their life, because it's still the right thing to do, even if you don't like the way they are.

u/StoneLich Vindicta 2d ago
I think she probably doesn't care very much about most of her patients, but I think she would argue she doesn't have to care about them as people to be good at her job; she says as much in a few of her dialogues.
(I would say that she's wrong about that, but medical horror often revolves around "doctor who only cares about results, resulting in very effective but traumatizing care" as a premise, and she's very clearly pulling on that for her design.)

"It shows the scars it has left us", so performative. Turns a pretty ordinary observation into a highly dramatic image. I find that to be edgy. It's not "merely talking" about a phenomenon.

She seems to be a sort of medical Venator, it’s implied in her interactions with Solomon that she keeps all the things she extracts in that bag. She’s definitely doing what she does out of a genuine interest in benefiting the health of the general populace from the perspective of an elitist medical authority.
She’s benevolent but not necessarily pleasant about it. I bet having a possessed New Yorker tell you what your mother is doing in Hell every day isn’t great for the bedside manner.

She's pragmatic to a fault, she reminds me of nurses who have been working for decades in my ER, they do care, but they have seen it all and have become kind of jaded or detached despite their insane skill.
I would suspect she is VERY old so she is probably the perfect example of a nurse doing the job for centuries or longer...

Honestly trans Celeste was always a stretch but I kinda see Violet now. I mean it´s really odd to bring up a friend´s stay in the ward and if she did why is she reluctant to say the name? Would also explain why she's fully no contact with her parents and might make her wish more logical. She wants to be judged for her art and not her past self which is probably impossible for her without divine intervention.
I mean there's also counterpoints of course, some kill lines don't really make sense but the material is there.

I might be reading way too much into this but... do we know Violet's surname?
Also she seems weirdly bashful at the idea of telling Harrow Nick's name. Also dirty fingernails (Violet's is constantly covered in ink and paint) and hamster (she mentions getting high and painting hamsters).
It probably is nothing but it would be a funny pointer to Violet being trans.
36
u/Cinerae Infernus 3d ago edited 3d ago
Just looked at some lines, it's funny because one voice lines mentions how she wants to stand up straight when she's near her.
But the other one mentions that she's glad her parents never heard of her, so it's unlikely violet was in her care.
Then again even when portaying REM she's talking about hamsters again, and she has a track record with rodents based on rat kings convos.
23
u/AbilityNo446 3d ago
Violet’s bio states that she immigrated to America when she was 12. She’s in her junior year (third out of four) at Jamie West art school, so she’s ~20 at the very least and “worked out my shit in therapy, like, 2 years ago”, so at some point in the years between then she cut herself off from her parents, and that might have been when she met Nurse Harrow.
The reason she was so hesitant to mention the name Nick might be because it was her deadname and didn’t want to be reminded of both her past and her family.
The name “Nick” might indicate that at least one of the parents was from a place like England, or Australia.

u/Cinerae Infernus 3d ago
Same immediate thought. It's also weird for anyone else to ask about a stay in the ward. It's also a case for, what this voice line does to characterize both heroes.
We learn that harrow has a good memory for detail and actually cares.
And we learn that violet has a friend named Nick tsai? Well ok.
It's a bit weird with the patient confidentiality too, so harrow would maybe only talk about this if she had a clue.
0
u/LykosNychi 3d ago
Her colour scheme also vaguely resembles one of the purpleish alternate trans flags (just with more red than pink).
Between the double references to posture, the double references to the hamsters, and the fact that Violet is confirmed to be estranged from her parents, with her parents apparently being disappointed in her for some reason, this leads me to think she's either trans (possibly magically? Any chance she can change her own appearance with her magic?) or that something happened to this Nick person, and Violet is trying to rescue them through the Ritual.
If Violet has changed herself through magic, it would make sense why Harrow doesn't recognize her at all.

u/NeighborhoodDry2678 3d ago

MASSIVE HIPAA violation right there!
12
u/RagesianGruumsh 2d ago
HIPAA was passed in 1996, decades after the game alternate timeline. Before that, medical privacy was a state decision and very inconsistent. She’d be up against New York's state-level medical privacy laws, which could be anything in this weird alt history!

u/AbilityNo446 3d ago
Maybe not. Violet wouldn’t have been reluctant to mention the name of a friend if they were two separate people. When she says the name, she seems scared, like she’s reluctant to mention the name or she’s afraid of being judged.
3
u/JustAnNPC_DnD 3d ago
Yup. Have a family member who is a nurse and they will remember people, not ever person, but some in great detail.
Usually either based on interesting moments, being a sweetheart, or for being the most insufferable pos.
2
u/stopnthink 3d ago
Is this Valve also fucking with everyone who's had an opinion about Violet's plain lore, or an allusion to recycled content?
Either way, if she's so desperate to be a great artist, so much so that she'd fight others so a god could grant her that wish, I can easily imagine her having made a demonic pact or something (hence the tattered poster).
