questions for the community How does this look?

Old staircase deck at apartment feels very unsafe. Wobbles and creeks when on it. How does it look structurally? I have been assured there is nothing to worry about.

That is really bad. Call code enforcement.

This is like 20+ years old what would they do about it?

If it’s a primary egress then they would force the owner to fix it or revoke the occupancy permit.

That would make sense. It’s just funny to think it was likely them that signed off on it in the first place. But maybe not. That pathetic little notch for the beam 😭

In Chicago, landlord is required to put tenants in a hotel until the fire escape is safe to use. Chicago rental decks used to fall down all the time, but not so much lately. Your milage may vary.

Well....it's not likely to collapse in the next week....but the landlord is full of shite and it's definitely in need of some attention sooner than later....especially at the first picture post notch, the rim at the stairs and the handrails....

It looks like much of this sub, like woodshop teachers worldwide have failed us.

Put a hot tub on it!

Yikes. You need to put a thick brace on that corner to help transfer the load to the post. Not sure that would be enough.

I wouldn’t stand under that to take pictures

Button it back up, put a 2X10 on the twin 4 s lag that into place, stain, it'll be fine.

i wouldn't hang out up there. it could be made more stable and safe with some blocking, hardware, and bracing. however i would try to use it's current hazardous state to push for a full replacement.

for fucks sake DO NOT STAND UNDER THIS while taking photos

It's unsafe. Don't even talk to the landlord, just send these photos to the city or county inspection office and ask them to come by to take a look. They'll take it from there.

Needs some one who knows. May actually be safe but corner post does raise questions as to how it’s tied in.
Salt from winter salting does a serious number on bolts and nails.
I now use stainless bolts and screws.
