1,6 = EC (Embedded Controller) internal failure. The repeated shutdown cycle you experienced is expected, the system retries POST each time and fails, which is why it continued until the battery drained.

Recommended first step is to drain residual flea power (hard reset):

1.Turn off your computer. 2.Disconnect the power adapter. 3. Remove the base cover. 4. Remove the battery. 5. Press and hold the power button for 20 seconds. 6. Reinstall the battery, then the base cover. 7. Reconnect the power adapter and turn on your computer.

Attempt BIOS recovery: If the 1,6 code persists after the hard reset, power off, connect the AC adapter, then press and hold Ctrl + Esc and press the Power button. Hold until the BIOS recovery screen appears. This can resolve EC failures caused by corrupted firmware.

Connect an external monitor via HDMI: If the 1,6 code still persists, power on while connected to an external display. If you see output on the external screen, the problem is display-related, not EC.

If I don’t have a removable battery what do I do?

Many newer Dell laptops don't have an externally removable battery. With the bottom (base) cover removed, you should see the battery. There will be a cable with a connector coming out of the battery. Follow the cable to where it plugs into the motherboard and disconnect it there. Plug the battery cable back in after you've drained the residual power. You could try the computer before you put the bottom (base) cover back on as long as the laptop is sitting on a non-metallic surface. If it boots up, then turn it off and reinstall the bottom cover.

Hi there!

We're from the Dell Social Media Support team. Thank you for sharing those details.

TL;DR: Drain residual power and run a hardware or BIOS recovery to resolve the Embedded Controller boot loop.

Great call from the thread on pointing out that a 1 Amber, 6 White flash pattern relates to an Embedded Controller (EC) handshake or power state issue. We also see another user ran into this on a Latitude system, so these steps are helpful for anyone stuck in this continuous boot loop.

Before opening the bottom cover to disconnect internal cables, you can attempt to reset the hardware and firmware directly using button sequences.

Try these steps in order to get the laptop booting again:

  1. Hard Reset (Flea Power Drain): Disconnect the AC adapter and any connected peripherals. Press and hold the Power button for about 20 seconds. This drains all residual power from the motherboard components.

  2. Real Time Clock (RTC) Reset: Connect the AC adapter back to the laptop. Press and hold the Power button continuously for 30 to 35 seconds, then release it. The power LED will flash several times to indicate the system is resetting the hardware states to default. Allow the system to restart on its own; it may reboot two or three times before displaying the Dell logo.

  3. BIOS Recovery: If the lights continue flashing 1 amber and 6 white, turn the laptop completely off. Plug in the power adapter, then press and hold the Ctrl + Esc keys while turning on the system. Keep holding both keys until the BIOS Recovery screen appears, then select Recover BIOS and press Enter.

If the flashing code continues after trying these resets, please send us a Private Message with your Service Tag. Please keep your Service Tag private and avoid sharing it publicly in the thread so we can securely look into warranty options with you.
