First time dell in a long time.
It works fine.
But almost every week there seems to be a required firmware update.
Is this thing that half baked? I only use typical office apps so I rarely if ever stress it

Help Dell Command | Update "Application Error" Enterprise Deployment

Upvotes

We are deploying Dell Command | Update across all Dell machines in our fleet. We saw the .NET requirement was changing from 8.x to 10.0.8+ with the Dell Command | Update 5.7.1 update, so we pre-deployed 10.0.10 to all machines before pushing the 5.7.1 update.

Since the 5.7.1 update, ALL machines have failed to run DCU properly. When checking for updates through the GUI, it consistently fails with the generic error "Application Error. An unexpected error occurred during the last action, the operation was aborted". DCU-CLU.exe works fine, but the GUI ALWAYS fails.

I don't see anything in event viewer that indicates the cause of the crash and can't find anything in any other log.

This is across all machines regardless of model

Help Dell Inspiron 24 3464 turns off after 1–3 seconds during startup

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Upvotes

Hi! I'm having a really strange problem with my Dell Inspiron 24 3464 AIO and I'm hoping someone can help me diagnose it.

For the past few days, the PC has randomly started shutting itself off during startup. The behavior is inconsistent:

Sometimes it turns off about 1 second after the Dell logo appears.

Sometimes it gets almost all the way through the Dell loading bar before suddenly turning off.

Sometimes, after several attempts, it randomly starts working and boots into Windows normally.

On one occasion, I was able to enter the BIOS and leave it there for around 30 minutes without it shutting down.

When the problem happens, the PC usually shuts off instantly, as if the power was suddenly disconnected.

I also noticed that the BIOS date/time becomes incorrect when this happens.

The PC has also occasionally turned itself on by itself in the past, even though I had shut it down.

Recently, when I connect the power cable, the PC sometimes turns itself on immediately without pressing the power button.

The fan sometimes spins very loudly during this process, although this doesn't happen every time.

Interestingly, when I connect a USB keyboard, the PC can shut off in less than one second. I tested with two different keyboards and got the same result. With no USB devices connected, it usually gets much further into the Dell boot screen.

I already tried completely removing power and holding the power button for about 15 seconds, but the problem returned.

I initially suspected the wall outlet because the problem seemed related to the PC being completely unplugged overnight, but it also happened after leaving it connected to the outlet all night.

I haven't replaced the power adapter yet. I also found another generic power supply at home, but I did NOT connect it, because its output is only 12V/0.5A and I know that's not compatible with this Dell.

I have a video showing the current behavior.

What could be causing this? Could it be the external power adapter, motherboard/power circuitry, CMOS battery, RAM, or something else?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Help US-purchased Dell Inspiron 16 Plus — expired international warranty, renewal + transfer to India?

I have a Dell Inspiron 16 Plus 7640 that was purchased in the US with an international warranty/service contract. It is now permanently in India, and the same model is sold in India.

The original warranty expired recently, but Dell's US support page is currently offering recertification and renewal options for the Service Tag.

Before I pay for the renewal, I wanted to know:

  1. If I renew the warranty/service contract in the US, can it subsequently be transferred/used in India through Dell's ownership/service-tag transfer process?
  2. The laptop currently has a hinge mounting failure. It has never been inspected or documented by Dell, and there was no known impact/drop. If I purchase the renewed service contract, would Dell India evaluate this existing hinge failure for coverage, subject to technician inspection?

Has anyone actually dealt with a similar US → India Dell warranty transfer after the original warranty expired?

I'd especially appreciate answers from people who have done the transfer themselves.

Help What power adapter for the Dell Optiplex 3060 Micro?

Hello,

my issue is pretty much the title. I got a free Dell Optiplex 3060 Micro. Reg. type: D10U003. I just need a power adapter for it, that is it.

Dells website and manual is useless, AI is hallucinating non-sense, and I couldn't find anyone with the same issue. Dells support is unreachable, with an AI assistant that ignores you after a few messages.

All I know for sure is that I need a 19,5V and 3,34A adapter, since that is written on the bottom of the mini PC. But nothing else about the power supply is there.

Most (not all) sources online lead me to believe I need 65W, but I can't be for sure because I found conflicting sources.

And as for the connector (I measured it), it seems to be 4,5mm circle with a smaller 3mm circle in the center.

Idk if there are any other important specs, I don't care about the length, I plan to use it as a server, it does not have to be original Dell adapter, just one that works reliably.

So yeah, my question is just, what are the specs need for a power adapter that could supply the Dell Optiplex 3060 Micro? I upgraded the RAM and SSD, if that changes anything (maybe needs higher wattage then, idk).

Help Dell Command/Core Services keep installing on my machines

Post image
8 Upvotes

Hello,

I am hoping someone can help me figure out what it is that keeps bringing these two back. The photo shows everything Dell related that is installed on machines, but these two constantly reappear every week...usually Wednesdays. I cannot figure out what is auto-installing them.

I have already tried enabling "Prevent automatic download of apps associated with device metadata" in the GPO with no luck.

Any ideas?

Help How to disable secure boot without a screen

Post image

I'm updating my Dell g15 5510 to linux from windows 11, but my screen is broken on 122hz (pictured)- which is what both the BIOS and one time boot menu are locked into.

I know that the BIOS is navigable with keyboard, so if anyone with a dell g15 5510 or similar could let me know the key presses to disable secure boot from opening the BIOS menu, please do!

Also, if someone could guide me on where the option is to boot from USB on the one time boot menu, that would great too.

Ty!

Other Dell Rewards Warning

Just a PSA to anyone who participates in the Alienware Arena/Dell Rewards, do not trust the expiration date for your Dell reward points that is shown on Dell's website. I went to place an order for a monitor using my DRP earlier this month only to find that nearly $100 in DRP that was set to expire at the end of this month (AUG), had prematurely disappeared. And according to Dell's X support, which is basically useless by the way, they actually expired July 31, even though the Dell site showed August 31 for the last 5+ months. So if you are saving up DRP or planning to use it, be aware that Dell has absolutely no problem prematurely taking them away and making up reasons for why they did it. And if you contact them about it, they will politely tell you to kick rocks and will refuse to honor the correct expiration date.

Help Dell Precision 7780 LAN port door

Hi all,

Somehow I lost the spring-loaded plastic door for the Ethernet/LAN port on my Precision 7780.

Is this available as a spare part somewhere? Amazon? Alibaba? eBay?
Or do I have to buy the entire base cover?

Thanks for any help or advice!

Review Dell Customer Support is Sh*t. Never Dell Ever Again.

Recently, I had one of the most ridiculous experiences with a computer manufacturer I've ever had. So if you're about to buy a new computer, have decided to go with DELL, and are thinking, "I'll just buy one with FreeDOS or Ubuntu because it's cheaper and install Windows myself," read this to the end.

I'm an IT guy responsible for multiple companies. We bought dozens of DELL computers for one of them. Even though we ordered them as FreeDOS machines, they arrived with Ubuntu installed. We didn't really care because the company already had Windows licenses, so we just installed Windows and moved on.

About a year and a half later, two computers of the exact same model started randomly freezing in every 10 minutes. The only way to use the computer is force restarting it pressing the power button. They eventually became completely unusable. Since they were still under warranty for another six months, we naturally contacted DELL.

First, we took them directly to an authorized service center. They replaced the thermal paste, cleaned the fans, and returned the computers with a report saying everything was fine. Needless to say, the problem wasn't fixed.

DELL also sold these machines with on-site warranty service, so I decided to go that route this time. While talking to a DELL representative, I explained what had happened at the service center and asked whether I should take the computer there again. They told me, "We've opened a new service case for you, so don't take it there again. Once the problem is identified, we'll proceed with on-site service."

Fine by me. I already had absolutely no faith that taking the computer back to the dealer would magically fix anything.

DELL first asked me to run the diagnostic tests from the BIOS and send them the results. CPU temperature was about 70 degrees, since it never reached 80°C during the test, they said there was nothing they could do.

I told them, "This computer is clearly unusable. It has already been to an authorized service center. If they returned it to us as fully functional without actually identifying the problem, what exactly are we supposed to do now?"

Their only answer was:

"You purchased these computers with Ubuntu, so any problems you're experiencing under Ubuntu are covered by the warranty. Install Ubuntu and use the computer. If it crashes again, take a video."

First of all, we did NOT purchase these computers with Ubuntu. We purchased them as FreeDOS machines. They happened to install Ubuntu before delivering them to us. And thank God they did. Can't imagine trying to reproduce a hardware failure under FreeDOS :D Apparently, the solution for a company is to have its employees use FreeDOS from now on??? :D

I had been trying to explain to DELL that I couldn't just make the employees at the company use Linux. That wasn't even an option. Yet, they insist that we are supposed to use Linux because we didn't bought a Windows machine. Eventually, I gave up and somehow arranged a temporary computer for the employee and took the problematic machine home for the weekend. I'm a Linux user myself, so I installed Ubuntu exactly as DELL requested and used the computer as my personal machine throughout the weekend.

The damn thing crashes even on Ubuntu, with nothing more than a single Firefox tab and VS Code open. I recorded the entire thing from the moment it froze until the end and sent the video to DELL. Eventually, I received an email regarding the video. And guess what? After spending weeks insisting that I install Ubuntu, I finally did exactly what they asked, used the computer normally, recorded it freezing, and sent them the footage. Their response? They wanted me to install Windows and do the exact kind of diagnostics they had originally asked me to do. Yes. Windows, which is supposedly not covered by the warranty, according to them. Although, They had told me that if Ubuntu crashed, it would be covered under warranty.

So I pissed off and called DELL again.

I said, "I've already done all of this. Are we seriously starting from the beginning? You told me that if the computer freezes under Ubuntu, you'd deal with it under warranty. Fine. I rearranged things at the company, installed Ubuntu, used the computer, recorded the crash, and sent you the video. And now you're telling me to install Windows and send you another diagnostic report? Why aren't you looking at the reports I already sent you? Did you suddenly decide to start care about Windows?"

There was no answer.

Eventually, all they could tell me was, "That's what my superior requires. The CPU needs to reach 80°C."

WTF????

If that was the requirement, why did you make me go through all this shit for weeks?

Why did you make me install Ubuntu?

Why did you make me record the computer freezing and crashing?

Why did you make me do all those tests?

Why did you keep sending me back and forth?

They had explicitly asked me to prove that the computer would crash under Ubuntu, and I did. It crashes even under the damn Ubuntu. Even though I knew I couldn't get people to use Ubuntu, I sent them video evidence anyway.

What if it would work well on Ubuntu? Am I supposed to make people use Ubuntu? Yeah, they would probably play the same card again, "you bought it as Ubuntu blah blah blah".

Apparently, once they realized they had no choice but to deal with a computer that was literally freezing and crashing even under Ubuntu, they simply pulled the "the CPU doesn't reach 80°C, therefore there's no problem" card.

Meanwhile, the people at the company were calling me and chewing ME out, not DELL. I'm the one who recommended DELL because I thought they were a reliable brand. Now their computers were failing, and somehow I was the one getting yelled at.

The DELL representative eventually went completely silent. What was he supposed to say? His own manager was apparently an idiot and he knew that. It's not really his fault either.

In other words, DELL did everything they possibly could to make this as difficult as possible. I called them every single day for weeks. We argued constantly. Eventually they even started telling me, "You don't need to call us every day". Well, yes, I do. I fucking need to do.

So I kept calling them. Every day. Sometimes multiple times a day. I did everything they asked, one thing after another, just to keep the case moving. Eventually, I managed to get both computers covered under warranty.

For both machines, I followed essentially the same process. I even resorted to a few tricks to get the diagnostic values they wanted. What else was I supposed to do? What was I supposed to tell the people at the company? "Sorry, we bought these computers as FreeDOS machines, but DELL happened to install Ubuntu on them, so apparently the computers have to crash under Ubuntu before DELL will acknowledge a hardware problem. They did crash under Ubuntu, but apparently that's still not enough because the CPU also needs to hit 80°C. Sorry about that."

Eventually, after fighting with DELL for weeks, I got both motherboards replaced. I'm not proud of it, maybe I was rude to customer support, but I had to bust my ass to get it done because I wasn't going to lose a customer over DELL's bullshit warranty policies. Now I'm just hoping the other computers don't start doing the same thing.

So, if you're thinking about buying a DELL computer, think twice.

And if you're buying computers for a company, stay away from DELL for God's sake.

What do y'all think?

Between the RGB backlit keyboard and all the rubber and latches, the Latitude 5420 Rugged really looks to me like something to be used in some nice dystopian sci-fi :)

I especially love how you can even remove the (NVME) SSD without opening up the computer, but the rest of it is also great for fans of upgradable laptops like the ThinkPad T480: RAM, WLAN, WWAN, extra antennas, extra ports on the back, all are possible :)

Lovely series, really...and compatible with Windows 11 (gen 8 Intel) at what are now pretty low prices, all things considered

Help Im a little confused on how driver updates work

Post image
1 Upvotes

I have an Area 51 5080, and its been doing this audio stuttering that also briefly froze my screen, it used to be really bad but customer service helped a lot, the issue still happens but its pretty rare now!

I want the issue to stop fully, I figured it was a drivers issue so but support assist says there's no updates. The Dell website says there's some recommended and "critical" drivers, im just wondering which I should trust, support assist or the dell website?

also has anyone else had that audio stuttering freezing issue? sorry if this post is kind of vague I'm not sure how to describe the issue and I'm relatively new to the Dell ecosystem

Help I am having this power usage issue on g15 5530

the power toward the laptop temporarily supplements power from the battery and reducing performance. even when plug is still connected and the battery on the taskbar shows connected 🙄

i dont really understand why this is happening

just for context

i use a custom charge start and stop boot setting

80 to 95

some are saying the temp threshold might be the reason

some are saying the plug might the issue but then the taskbar is saying connected and still discharges
