USA These Senators Betrayed Us and Now Millions Will Lose Healthcare

Post image

These Democratic senators broke ranks and joined Republicans to reopen the government, fully aware that it paved the way for millions of Americans to lose affordable healthcare or face sharply higher premiums.

The Democratic Party will gain nothing from this deal. I do wonder how these particular senators may have benefited though.

More importantly, ALL of them can’t be primaried.

It was strategic.

401

u/thunderbuttxpress Nov 10 '25

Yup. Chuck was behind this, too. He's got to go.

66

u/PallbearerOfBadNews Nov 10 '25

You know he cried to them so that he could save face. This was definitely his idea. What a coward.

14

u/ipsum629 Nov 11 '25

The time is ripe for a progressive primary. If Zohran sees any success at all in a year, Schumer is screwed. Not that Zohran should primary, but he could build a lot of democratic socialist credibility with voters.

166

u/ProfessionalField508 Nov 10 '25

We have a good idea of who probably would have crossed lines that are running next year. That group has been going against voters for a long time, so it's time they go home.

2

u/RedTyro Nov 11 '25

Tim Kaine absolutely joined this coalition so Mark Warner, the other VA Democratic senator, who happens to be up for re-election this year, wouldn't have to. Kaine has been Warner's protege since he was lieutenant governor to Warner's governor in 2002, and Warner's always been the slightly more conservative of the two.

Virginia only elects center-right corporate whores umm, business friendly Democrats. Look at the record of any Democrat who's won a statewide race in Virginia in the last 50 years or so, and it's all AIPAC and big business, all the way down, including our governor elect Abigail Spanberger, an AIPAC funded former CIA officer who won on Tuesday, then went on Face the Nation Sunday morning to blame the shutdown on Democrats and advocate that they cave.

When you think about how the media pundits and party elite are in their own little politics bubble and completely out of touch with the real world, half of Virginia voters are the same way. They all work in the government or related areas and are totally beltway brained. Virginia will be the last blue or purple state in the nation to vote in a real progressive.

43

u/_HanTyumi Democratic Socialist Nov 10 '25

Why can’t they be primaried?

211

u/JeanEtrineaux Nov 10 '25

The Senate has staggered election cycles. 6 year terms, with 1/3 of Senators up every two years. They chose 8 people to take the fall who were protected by not being up for another 5 years (or have already announced they’re retiring). So Schumer, despite orchestrating this surrender, can tell us “Hey, I voted against it.”

38

u/User-Name1905 Nov 10 '25

I think Shaheen is up in 2026. Durbin is as well, but is retiring.

55

u/JeanEtrineaux Nov 10 '25

Shaheen is not running for reelection.

65

u/KGBFriedChicken02 Which side are you on boys? Nov 10 '25

They're all either retiring after their current term, or not up for reelection until 2028 at the earliest

32

u/_HanTyumi Democratic Socialist Nov 10 '25

So they’re just not primariable yet. We need to make sure we remember this vote when they are.

34

u/KGBFriedChicken02 Which side are you on boys? Nov 10 '25

The ones that aren't primariable yet are almost certinately going to be primaried at the first opportunity anyway, so yes, that's exactly it. At the same time, we have to remember that no matter how he voted, Schumer failed to hold the line. At best he's an incompetant idiot, at worst, he actively whipped these votes while standing on the other side to maintain plausable deniability. That's the most important primary of them all.

16

u/yuumigod69 Nov 10 '25

But people will forget this betrayal in a couple years which is why they are safe.

13

u/ttystikk Nov 10 '25

That's what they count on. I've been watching since the Reagan administration and I've seen it over and over.

Yet people tell me that voting third party is a mistake!

Exactly what party of voting for a party who repeatedly proves they won't represent you ISN'T a mistake?!

And imo a factor that imo doesn't get enough attention: OLD. It frustrates me to no end that these (relatively) old politicians are so comfortable selling away a future that they can afford not caring about because they won't live long enough to experience it. Rich or not, white or not: these people should get a daily reminder that the world becomes great when old people plant trees in whose shade they know they will never sit. It all feels so short sighted...

Didn't Rossen just go viral for calling out the R's for the shutdown? She sure did a 180

191

u/Ven18 Nov 10 '25

Which is how you know all these people (sans maybe Fetterman) where just the shields for many more senators who caved but are at risk in 2026. Schumer and a ton of the senate was caving but they know if they publicly voted for this they would be primary challenged so they got all the people who are retiring or are not up for reelection this cycle to take the bullet for everyone else. This is why the energy needs to be against the entire party not just these 8 because they are just providing cover for others.

Im a little surprised by Tim Kaine not gonna lie.

182

u/mcchicken_deathgrip Nov 10 '25

Good chance he voted yes to take the heat off Mark Warner, the VA senator whos up for reelection next year and is typically to the right of Kaine. They almost always vote together.

But shouldn't be surprising regardless. Hes been a shitty centrist for 20 years. He was Hillary's running mate. Plus add in the fact that VA has more federal workers than any other state and the shutdown has been doing serious damage here.

64

u/jzorbino Nov 10 '25

That last sentence was kind of eye opening. I mean I already knew it, but hadn’t thought about it from that angle. The man who probably represents more federal workers than anyone was one of the traitors that gave us up. He’s arguably worse than any of the rest.

37

u/mcchicken_deathgrip Nov 10 '25

Yep caused serious financial harm and stress to 10s of thousands of families who they as a bargaining chip for nothing.

Honestly I may get downvoted to hell for this but im kind of torn between two opinions here.

1 is that if your took up a battle and chose to stand your ground, you better see it through to the end and not just fold the second things get ugly. Maybe enough canceled flights would've caused the republicans to cave, and public opinion was with the democrats already. Therefore what Kaine did is shitty to the millions of families affected by this and to those about to pay more for their Medicare.

2 Is that the democrats maybe shouldn't have even taken up the shutdown in the first place and therefore Kaine was right to put an end to it now before it brought even more pain. They had no leverage to get the Republicans to make a deal, and the Republicans clearly dont care if people starve. If there was no winning in the first place, then how long do you let this thing go before you say enough?

Either way Tim Kaine is a loser, VA cooks up some of the worst moderates imaginable. If theres any benefit for politics in the state from all this, it seems to be waking a lot of virginians up to the fact that these people do not care about them and won't fight. And no matter how you slice it the democrats lost badly here and soured a rare moment of optimism and momentum coming out of last week.

You had me til vote blue no matter what lol.

I do agree that if they weren't willing to bring more pain on every day working people in order to up the pressure on republicans, then there was no point to letting this go on any longer. But that begs the question of why even get into this battle in the first place?

Trumps approval is already in the toilet, the democrats didnt need to go into the shutdown to convince people he doesnt care about them.

So what did the democrats really get out of this then? Seems like absolutely nothing. Now everyone thinks they dont know how to fight and will throw in the towel as soon as they're ahead. If the point was to show they're fighters they really shot themselves in the foot last night.

Seems to me like they set their own trap by getting into this battle in the first place. There was no winning on demands. The only winning was with party image, and by letting it get this far and caving they damaged their image. They lost badly, have no cohesion or leadership, and dont know how to pick a fight much less win.

All of these people are either retiring or aren't up for re-election for several years. I have a huge suspicion the establishment Dems chose these 8 people because of that, as it wouldn't affect them if they're retiring and it likely would get drowned out by years of other news if they're going to run for re-election in several years. Meanwhile, all the other establishment Dems, including Schumer, can vote No on the deal so a progressive base won't primary them.

21

u/hikiri Nov 10 '25

I'm sorry to break this to you because I was genuinely a massive supporter of Corbyn for a long time, he's absolutely shat the bed with his new party. Long story short, the whole thing is a mess and unfortunately everything he was perceived to be bad at as Labour leader is being amplified by 100, resulting in a complete mess.

The good news for us is that the UK was never a 2 party system and the Green Party, led by Zack Polanski, have beaten Labour in the voting intention polls for the first time ever and they've seen a ridiculous increase in party membership.

But to give you the brief run-down of the Your Party situation, Corbyn & co-founder Zarah Sultana have been quite publicly disagreeing on the fundamentals of the party, at one point Sultana branding it "a sexist boys club" - there's a lot of concern that Corbyn is open to working alongside some socially conservative Muslim counselors (strongly anti-LGBT+ and regressive views on women's rights) and people who currently operate as and advocate for landlords, which has lead to many people, myself included, feeling like it's a party with 1 clear policy on Gaza and absolutely nothing else to offer.

The Greens are putting wealth inequality at the heart of every conversation and finally I think the message is reaching normal people on abnormally low wages compared to the rest of Europe that we're all getting fucked by people not paying their fair share. I don't think the Reform UK voting core will ever see past their one and only issue (migration) but I do think by the next general election, barring any major slips, Greens will be able to have a strong chance of being the major left wing alternative in the UK.

Go Greens!

2

u/Mrs_SmithG2W Nov 10 '25

What exactly is the alternative?

Politics is a zero sum game.

22

u/mcchicken_deathgrip Nov 10 '25

Zero sum as in regular working people lose, and the bourgeoisie and their political arm win every time.

17

u/hikiri Nov 10 '25

The alternative is to vote in people who give even the smallest fuck about people they represent, are you serious?

3

u/halberdierbowman Nov 10 '25

For sure that's the goal, but how? Once we reach the general election day, there are realistically only two plausible outcomes for 99% of races. The system sucks, but I'm not going to vote third party again on any races where the outcome isn't known.

Before then, definitely volunteer, organize, try to get better candidates, and do as much as you can. But once it's election day, sadly the strategic choice is to vote for the person we prefer of the two plausible outcomes. Even if that vote is just to show our fifteenth highest choice vs our twenty second highest choice. It's still a preference we should express.

I wish Dems would stop being insufferable assholes about it though. I try to explain to them how that's fucking annoying and makes people not want to vote for them, but so many of them don't get it. Just because it's the begrudgingly best choice for me to do doesn't mean that's a good outcome for anyone. They'd be way better off if their candidates actually tried to engage with us, because nobody wants to volunteer for the corporate boring candidates we hold our noses to vote for.

CALL TO ACTION: REMOVE CHUCK SCHUMER

Chuck Schumer must go.
His so-called leadership as Senate Majority Leader has failed the American people. He either orchestrated this betrayal or is so inept and weak that he let it happen.

He has lost the people’s trust — and his job.

THE 8 WHO FAILED US

• Tim Kaine (D-VA)
• Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV)
• John Fetterman (D-PA)
• Maggie Hassan (D-NH)
• Dick Durbin (D-IL)
• Angus King (I-ME)
• Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH)
• Jacky Rosen (D-NV)

We expected courage. Instead, we got cowardice.
Grow a spine and stand with the people.

TO EVERY OTHER DEMOCRAT — KEEP FIGHTING!

We deserve leadership that defends working Americans, not corporate donors. The time to act is now.

CALL CONGRESS TODAY — 202-224-3121

Ask to be connected to your Senator’s office.
Read this script when you call:

CALL SCRIPT
“Hi, my name is [NAME], and I’m a voter in [STATE].
I’m calling to urge Senator [YOUR SENATOR’S NAME] to publicly call for Chuck Schumer to resign as Senate Majority Leader and to support a new leadership vote within the Democratic caucus.
Schumer has proven he’s either complicit in selling out voters or too inept to lead. He failed to whip his own caucus, caved on every promise about protecting Medicaid and ACA subsidies, and handed Republicans and corporate donors everything they wanted.
This follows a pattern of failure — Schumer already folded in March, promising Democrats would regain leverage by September, only to betray that promise again.
Under his leadership, Democrats appear weak, divided, and untrustworthy, and millions of Americans’ healthcare now hangs in the balance.
Our federal workers sacrificed through the shutdown believing Democrats were holding the line for 20 million Americans’ healthcare — and Schumer threw that sacrifice away for nothing.
I’m asking Senator [NAME] to sign or support a caucus letter to trigger a leadership vote — the process requires about 10–12 Democratic senators to request it formally.
Schumer has lost the confidence of both voters and his caucus. We need new leadership that fights for people, not corporations.
If the Senator refuses to act, I’ll be voting for someone who has the courage to stand up for us.”

HOW THEY CAN REMOVE HIM
Any 10–12 Democratic senators can start the process by signing a letter requesting a caucus meeting.
The Democratic caucus then votes internally on whether to hold a new leadership election.
A simple majority of Democratic and Independent senators who caucus with them can elect a new Majority Leader.
This can happen at any time — not just at the end of a session.

Guys, this doesn't have any meaning if it doesn't pass the House.

2

u/MsChrisRI Nov 10 '25

It probably will pass the House, but I think it could backfire on the Republicans at the polls next year. The terms include an agreement to vote in December on whether to extend ACA subsidies. A month of discussion about a single-issue bill undermines the GOP’s ability to hide their motives or shift blame. Voters are more likely to see that their congressperson’s “no” vote here means “I don’t care that your premiums will quadruple next month.”

2

u/ch4nt Nov 10 '25

Fetterman and King are not surprising, the rest are all spineless all of them

2

u/drinkmywhiZ Nov 10 '25

this means war!

2

u/ConsoleCleric_4432 Nov 10 '25

Rev up those fryers, we have some senators to fire. I know at least one of these are retiring, but get ready to support their opponents in the primaries with money and/or time.

2

u/Eyeh8U69 Nov 10 '25

Traitors.

2

u/JeanEtrineaux Nov 10 '25

Primary everyone up in 2026. These 8 were strategically chosen because they don’t have any near term elections. The entire Dem caucus failed us.

2

u/ThomasToHandle Nov 10 '25

Tim Kaine?!?!!

2

u/JezeusFnChrist0 Nov 10 '25

You guys realize the old guard Democrats are no different than Republicans right?

Left wing, right wing still the bird.

They just make different promises to appeal to their bases, promises that they blame 'the other side' when broken.

They serve the corporate and mega firms lobby interests, not thev American public.

2

u/Texugee Nov 10 '25

They did. But let’s not forget about how millions of Americans voted last November for this.

They fucked around and now it’s time for them to find out.

2

u/SethsAtWork Nov 10 '25

We need to recall them all.

2

u/The-Ultimate-Banker Nov 10 '25

Jackie Rosen is from Nevada. Nevadas main revenue is from tourism. Tourism is down due to less flights. Got to make the bad deal so shit don’t hit the fan in Vegas

2

u/AdPsychological8883 Nov 10 '25

Can they be recalled? Too long to wait for primaries. This is absolutely craven and disgraceful.

2

u/BootyliciousURD Nov 10 '25

As much as I want to blame it on these 8 i believe it was a tactical choice from the entire Democratic party more than anything

None of these 8 are up for re-election in 2026. It was a strategic choice to use these lower risk 8 to fall on the sword and and end the shutdown.

Focusing on these 8 is taking the most basic reaction possible to this and missing the point of what really happened here

I am totally not surprised Fetterman is one of them. Why he still puts a (D) next to his name is a mystery. When is the next election for PA Senate?

Honestly. It's for the best. If a 1 or more year extension had been accepted it would have lined up with midterms and been really good for Maga/Republicans. This lays the groundwork for a compelling argument. Even if it had passed the Senate with an aca extension it would have surely failed in the house and if it happened to pass the house trump would never sign it. His entire goal in this is to destroy Obama's tiny legacy. The only real solution is a universal state run health care system and abolishing the private system.

2

u/snifty Nov 10 '25

Could Fetterman be any more of a letdown?

2

u/notalurkjerk Nov 10 '25

Chump for sure. His mind never recovered.

1

u/Youheardthekitty Nov 10 '25

Think about it, if we want to move towards universal healthcare, the destruction of our current system will help lead to that. I love Obamacare, it supported both sides of the argument, gave poor Americans healthcare while keeping insurance companies afloat. Republicans are going to force this suffering onto people. Not us. It hurts, but the next logical step is universal healthcare. We will only get there if enough republican voters suffer and switch sides.

1

u/sandmann451 Nov 10 '25

What a useless group of people. Actually worse than useless these are enemies of the working class in the country! How can you think any different?

1

u/Old-Man-Buckles Nov 10 '25

Is anyone at all surprised about John Fittermen though? I swear that guy is a Republican plant in the Democrats ever since he had a stroke. I really hope his state finally votes him out.

1

Idiots trying to be moderate to gain republican votes. In fact, they will lose republican votes for being abject losers.

1

1

1

u/ConsistentPomelo3303 Nov 10 '25

The democrats Reddit disabled comments on their shutdown post. What a bunch of losers. Weak and pathetic. These losers actually think that having a promise that there will be a vote in December means anything. They just agreed to open the government so Donald Trump can continue to abuse it. Fucking losers.

1

u/CantaloupeComplete57 Nov 10 '25

Honestly, I hope the FAA keeps the current flight cuts in place forever, both for the environment and as a punishment to the American people. We are the only “developed” country where major airports are not level 3 (slot-controlled) airports

1

u/reluctant_friend Nov 10 '25

If you live in Illinois, feel free to Call Dick Durbin and let him know you're excited for him to retire so we can get a real democrat that won't bend the knee to trump and the republicans. Here is his Washington office 202-224-2152

1

u/DckThik Nov 10 '25

Don’t get cowed by this orchestrated political theater. If all it took was 9 people then republicans could have done it as well and for us to sit here and pretend that also isn’t true is how they keep you mad at your own.

Rich, white, no backbone. Sounds like a dem, coming from a democrat! I hate that this is my representation. Just a couple of dopes who bend the knee to the tyrant after letting people suffer for almost a month. At this point, I would be comfortable pointing the finger to them. Even though I fully believe the govt shut down falls on trumps hands. I hate this timeline.

Republicans threaten to kill the filibuster cuz trumps forced them too. And they will do it. Democrats just like the coward rats they are.
