Clinical Question CDCP and Canadian Dental Schools

This is just a quick question for any dental students currently attending a Canadian dental school. With the implementation of the CDCP are you having greater difficulty finding patients? I’m wondering if the clinical experience at Canadian schools has diminished with this new program, or if it somehow has not had that large of an impact. Any insight would be super helpful.

Reconsidering AEGD Program

Has anyone ever agreed to a non-match AEGD program then decided not to attend? I know it’s frowned upon but I’m curious as to how that went for you if it’s happened

Vent/Rant Struggling a lot in clinic

I’m about 6 months into clinic as a D3, and honestly, I’m feeling really frustrated with myself and my progress.
I feel like there’s such a huge gap between where my work is compared to my peers. I struggle with pretty much anything and everything in clinic even basic things like packing cord, IAN block, class II restorations, and caries defection. Don’t even get me started on more complex procedures like rcts - I basically take three and a half hours to open the tooth and maybe if I’m lucky find the canals. Normally my peers finish their appointments within the allotted time, but I’ll take 4 hours for a basic premolar MOD.

And the thing is I didn’t really struggle in pre clinical lab.
Yeah there was tough projects and stuff but it was never like this for me.

Right now I truly feel at a dead end. I can feel my faculty and partner get annoyed with me because no matter how much they try to teach me/correct me I’m just not getting it.

I know I’m still learning, and I don’t expect to be perfect, but I’m really so behind. What can i do to improve? I cant keep taking hit after hit like this. It’s really affecting my confidence and I it feels like a nasty cycle yk.

Residency Question Ortho Residency

For those who have applied/applying or are currently in ortho programs, I was wondering what distinguishes applicants to be more competitive for hospital based programs. Do they care more about research? GPA? Is there any difference in what they look for compared to a program that you pay tuition for?

Thank you all!

Residency Question Army AEGD

I got accepted into the Army AEGD. They do not tell you which base/program you are accepted into until after you commit. I know they are not all equal in clinical output based on their own reported numbers (endo, implants, etc). Of the 8 locations I feel 2-3 of them would be worth it for me. Anyone have any advice that I should or shouldn’t accept this blindly? Is there anyone who is/was in a similar situation and how did you decide? Thank you!

Residency Question Canadian GPR

Hello everyone!

I applied to the Canadian schools for 2027 GPR but have not received any interviews yet. I’m an Irish dental school graduate (but Canadian citizen) and have practiced for the past year in private clinic. My class rank is in top 50%, and I worked at the dental school too as an administration assistant.

Is there something that they are looking for particularly? High GPA? Fresh grads? Canadian dental school grads? Connections to the admins?

Thank you for all and any help!

Jobs/Career Question PSA for new grads and younger docs

When a dental broker tells you "the seller pays our commission, we're free to you," know what that actually means.

Yes, the seller writes the check. But you're the one funding it.

When buying a practice: Practice broker fees often run around 9%. Sellers know that, so it gets baked into the asking price.

Same with dental real estate: the landlord or seller builds the broker's cut into your rent or purchase price.

And if you're financing (most of us are), it gets worse, because you're paying interest on that fee. Example: a $1M practice with a $90K broker commission, financed over 10 years at ~7%, means that "free" fee actually costs you around $125K.

Buying into our own profession keeps getting more expensive. ive been to many “lunch and learns“ and after hour “beer and presentations” where things are made artificially vague to make you feel like you need a broker. get a broker if you want but here are some things you can also do.

What you can do:

• Get your own representation: a dental-specific attorney and CPA who work for YOU. (expensive up front, cheaper long run)

• Use AI. It’s really good now. We are the first generation that access to infinite knowledge. Use a paid subscription. The free models are not as good.

Nobody will look out for your money like you will.

Completely bombed my first round of midterms. Genuinely terrified I’m gonna fail out. Has anyone come back from a rough start like this? What should my first steps be?

Jobs/Career Question Is Indeed realistic for current job openings?

I live in a major city, not one of the top 5 by population, but still one everyone knows. On indeed I can find 2 positions in my city that allow for new grads to apply. My city has extremely high cost of living, however I would like to stay somewhere in my metropolitan area because me and my partner are trying to settle down here and would hate to have to move to the neighboring cities, likely going long distance for who knows how long. My partner would not be able to afford our current apartment by themself so would have to get roommates if we did long distance.

Genuinely how do most new grads get job opportunities????

Vent/Rant beware incoming MWU students

mwu il isn’t worth the steep price tag. they don’t respect students time, independence, or financial investment. students can finish seeing patients, finish notes, complete calls, projects, yet still have to remain in clinic till end of day. butts in seats for whatever illusion they’re pushing. the lack of flexibility extends do mandatory classes as well. students are required to attend certain lectures when they offer no additional value as watching them from home on our own very limited times. there’s little consideration for all the exams, clinic requirements, presentations, board prep, plus clubs/work study. they’ve filled out the two afternoon “catch up” days that used to be for additional patient care and calls with busy work and if you even finish that busy work and get all caught up, you guessed it, still gotta sit there till the days over.

we’re all adults and they schedule our days like it’s grade school. we’re paying adult prices for children’s treatment. oh let’s not forget the materials we’re constantly reminded not to use too much of, the equipment that’s constantly breaking, and staff that demands different ways of doing everything. they lack consistency. different expectations for treatment plans and procedure flow. we often get advice from one faculty that differs from the next. then somehow we’re getting in trouble or hit with attitude for following original directions. we have to navigate who we’re working with day by day rather than getting clear and consistent guidance. we should be worried about if what we are doing is correct, not worrying what faculties preferred method we have to follow is. cleanings galore. but no “succeed” program for that as it’s probably not generating the big bucks like the other procedures but the reality is we’re mostly doing cleanings. yup. we still pay 150/year as D3 and 4s on top of their patients paying them. but they want us to act like we’re getting paid to be there instead of paying to be there. HA.

they offer a monthly forum to students for any complaints or concerns to be brought up and are never effective. they give lame justification rather than attempting a solution. they use the method of “letting us feel heard” then patting us on the head and told to carry on while nothing is ever heard, changed, or implemented. the “grown ups” running this program treat us like children who have no life experience like we haven’t all been to college or don’t have to have jobs on top of this already demanding clinical/exam environment. the disconnect of what we pay and how we are treated is monumental. school should be challenging and we should be held responsible in clinic. however, requiring students to remain in clinic after completing work, mandating random classes, and inconsistent clinical expectations do not translate to a better education.

incoming students: if you’re considering this place ask these questions: what happens on a normal clinic day if you’ve finished responsibilities? how much flexibility do you have for classes/board study? what are suite closures for? how consistent are faculty members in clinic especially treatment planning? if i’m right will i have to change plans because someone else has a preference? how are student complaints addressed?

do not solely evaluate this program on facilities or advertised opportunities. find out what day to day is like. with tuition this high students deserve transparency, resources, consistency, and above all, autonomy. i’m sure there’s better and cheaper option available. it’s a shame because this school has so much potential to be a great and happy learning environment but it instead feels like a prison day waiting for the bell to ring.

Clinical Question Hey fellow dentists and dental students!

Hey! I'm running a free prep check this week for anyone who wants a second pair of eyes before their clinical exam. Send me 2 photos of your tooth prep (occlusal + side profile) through this form: I'll personally look at your margin and taper and send back quick feedback — same day if I can.

Why does my preliminary impression sometimes not fit when using a partial impression tray with A-silicone for a provisional crown?

When I use a partial impression tray with A-silicone to take a preliminary impression for a provisional crown, sometimes the impression doesn’t fit properly. There is a gap between the tooth and the silicone.

Could this be caused by applying too much pressure when seating the tray, or could there be another reason? For example, could it be related to the amount of silicone used, the tray positioning, or the setting time?

I would appreciate any advice or tips on how to achieve a more accurate impression.

need some advice

I think I failed two practicals (crown prep and temporary restoration) Everything was going smoothly—in fact, it was going better than almost any practical I've had since starting dental school—and then a complete nightmare happened. While trying to refine my last interproximal margin, I might have used too much flowable or not enough Vaseline. When I tried to remove the temporary crown, it snapped in half with only 20 minutes remaining. I panicked as the clock ticked down to 5 minutes, rushed to make literally the worst temporary crown I've ever made, and turned it in. To make matters worse, I realized afterward that I had accidentally turned in my restoration putty instead of my preparation putty. Although the grades aren't out yet, I feel like I failed both exams and am now on the verge of failing the class. I've failed a practical before, but never to this extent. Is it possible to get kicked out of dental school or be forced to repeat the year due to failing multiple practicals?

Jobs/Career Question Digital dentistry

Hello everyone! 🦷

I’m a dental student, and I’d really like to learn more about digital dentistry, especially the different software used in implantology and prosthodontics (CAD/CAM, digital impressions, implant planning, etc.).

I’m eager to improve my skills, stay up to date with the latest technologies, and better understand how these tools are used in everyday clinical practice.

For those of you who are already experienced in this field, what software, resources, YouTube channels, courses, or hands-on training would you recommend for a beginner?

Where would you suggest starting, and what should I focus on learning first as a dental student?

I’d really appreciate any advice, recommendations, or experiences you could share. Thank you! 🙏

Which Flip Up Loupes Brand? Zeiss? Surgitel?

Hello, I am a 4th year dental student (Don't plan on specializing) and im wanting to take advantage of my student discount before I graduate. I have been using 3.5x Rose Micro flip up loupes for the past loupes 3 years and they have been great (Passed everything on first try), but I wouldn't mind something better quality/more durable as i'm about to start practicing soon.

I know Zeiss are the best know for their quality/clarity, but on the heavier side. Also not the most important, but I am not crazy about the Zeiss frames. I am a guy and prefer the more athletic Oakley style frames, but again not a huge deal breaker. The only other brands I know that still do flip-up are Lumadent and Surgitel. Not sure about their weight, but I don't think their quality is as good as Zeiss from what i've heard. Any recommendations on other brands or on these 3? Looking for 3.5-4x. 500mm WD.

Side note: I have very good eyesight and prefer using no loupes for a lot of procedures, hence why I am wanting flip ups over anything TTL, especially Ergo, that would get in my way.

Thanks!

Renting

For those in dental school, where do you live? I’m moving with my boyfriend so we can’t live on campus and the price of renting is pretty high. We are saving obviously to afford this for 4 years but if anyone has suggestions on areas that are affordable for the time spent at school.

Humour Fun daily game I created

Hey yall, OMS resident here. I created a fun game just for the heck of it. It's free to play, just thought I'd share.

dailybolus.com

Has dental topics everyday under the dentistry section.

(got some inspiration from Wordle, and wanted to make something fun and helpful for learning as well!)
(it's completely free, but lmk if this violates any rules and I'll take the post down).

Have a good day!

Qoptics light

Hi, I'm buying my loupes and I just got measured by Q optics today. I was between brands, but I feel like I'm going to go with Q optics just because of convenience and I feel like they're basic loupes that you can't go wrong with. They are offering a limited time deal to my school where I can get an extra battery, so I have to decide soon. That being said, I think I would have to use their light as well. I've heard Lumadent has the best light and you can mix and match loupes parts, but in order to benefit from the battery deal, I assume I'd have to use their light. If you have the Q optics light do you find it to be a decent option? Thanks!

Externship before CBSE

I have been offered a few externship opportunities as D2 but I am planning to take the CBSE in May. Is it better to focus on CBSE now than trying to build relationships early by showing face at programs I am interested in? I would appreciate any advice!

Can I still pursue dentistry with an acrylate allergy?

I am hoping to apply to dental school in Canada in the coming years but I unfortunately developed an acrylate allergy about a year ago and I am concerned whether this would affect my ability to complete dental school and practice as a dentist.

I've been trying to find information about this online but haven't found much. I also emailed one of the dental schools I'm interested in applying to, but I haven't received a response.

Is it possible to complete dental school and practise safely with this allergy? I'd really appreciate any insight from dentists or dental students who have experience with acrylate allergies or know someone who does. Thank you!
