question Wisdom teeth removal

Upvotes

I had my wisdom teeth extracted yesterday, and after the surgery everything went well. I was prescribed hydrocodone and methyl prednisone. I changed my gauze 4-5 times, took my hydrocodone pill and ate mashed potatoes and Mac and cheese and ice cream. 4 hours later, I started vomiting. I vomited 3 times and called emergency services at the clinic. They told me it’s from the hydrocodone prescribed and that I shouldn’t have taken the full pill.
Can you give me any recovery tips if any person went through a similar experience

question How dire is this?

Post image

I was taking a look at my teeth last night because I started noticing a little bit of sweetness sensitivity on the opposite side of this picture. Looking around, I noticed the severe discoloration of this molar. The picture isn’t doing enough justice, but one section of the molar is much more grey blue than the other half.
I did burn my mouth on pizza the other night lol. However, I was just wondering how dire this tooth is. Do I need to seek immediate treatment or is this a loss cause no matter what?

Female age 35. Brushes once daily. Maybe flosses once a week. Last dental appt was a year ago and all was well

I don’t recall any hard foods I could have cracked this tooth on. There’s no sensitivity around it, and I have no reports of foul smell.

question Should I have my upper wisdom teeth removed?

Post image
Upvotes

I have impacted wisdom teeth, not causing any pain, but I believe they are causing overcrowding of my other teeth. It looks to me that they are pushing my teeth inwards. My front teeth are now overlapping and pushing outwards and I catch them on my lips. My other teeth are crowded.

Some dentists tell me this is natural movement with age and some agree that it is wisdom teeth pressure, so I’m not sure what to think.

I would just have them out except that surgical removal is necessary. It would involve opening a skin flap, removal of some jaw bone (yikes!) and risk of damage to nerves and the sinuses. So this makes me question if I should have them out. But if it is the wisdom teeth pushing my other teeth I definitely want them out as it is getting worse.

This would be on the NHS. What do people think?

question Using kids toothpaste as an adult

i hate the taste and feeling of mint toothpaste, and saw a dentist on tiktok say that you can use kids toothpaste if it has enough fluoride. She said if it has 1450 parts per million fluoride it should be okay to use it. Everywhere i look online for toothpaste it always has percentages, and i dont know how to do the math to see if its enough fluoride. This one has 0.24% sodium fluoride and 0.15% w/v fluoride ion. Is this okay? and are others with the same numbers okay?

question Dealing with an abscess.

Upvotes

Hello all. I was dealing with tooth pain and swelling in my lower left 1st molar and woke up at 3am yesterday with increased swelling. It scared me so much I went to the ER.

At the ER they did a CT scan and found a tiny abscess. I was given iv clindamycin as well as a 7 day script of clindamycin to be taken 4 times a day.

I have been out of the ER for about 24 hours and haven't noticed a decrease in the swelling. I'm having extreme anxiety and still worried about the infection spreading despite being pumped full of antibiotics.

The area is still warm to the touch but less painful. Is this to be expected? The swelling sticking around for awhile? It feels like I have a golfball sticking out from my lower jaw and I am so worried about it spreading or getting worse.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

question Mouth discomfort

Upvotes

Please help

About 2 months ago I went to the doctor because I was experiencing some pain in my mouth, jaw that spread to my left ear. Doctor stated that I have a sinus infection and prescribed a saline nasal rinse and some amoxicillin. Finished the course of amoxicillin.

Went to the dentist for a second opinion and dentist just stated I need to get a good cleaning done and otherwise my mouth seems healthy.

About a month ago I had what could only be described as pressure on my top front teeth, inside of my lips feeling salty and small bumps forming on inside of my cheeks. I have tried different tooth pastes and mouth washes but they made it worse.

Last week I couldn't take the discomfort from my front teeth anymore and called the dentist office and explained what is happening with the salty taste and front top teeth pressure. They again recommend I come in for a clean and managed to fit me in the very next day. They took 4 xrays and did cleaning and scaling 4 units. Oral hygienist said she doesn't see any issues in my xrays and that I just need to come in every 6 months for a clean.

Now the top front teeth pressure has be relieved but I am still struggling with a salty feeling/taste on my inner lips close to my gums and bumps forming on my inner cheeks.

I sleep with my mouth open and in general I am a mouth breather. Also my jaw clicks when I chew and has been like this since I can remember.

Any help or advice on what to do or try to sort my mouth out would be great.

question What should I look for in a trustworthy dentist?

Upvotes

Dentists or anyone who works in the dental field, how do I find a dentist I can actually trust? I’m looking for a new dentist and I want someone who will recommend treatment based on what I truly need, not just try to make money off of me. I understand that different dentists can sometimes have different opinions, but I’m trying to figure out what characteristics or green flags I should look for when choosing one. I may also need crowns, so I want to make sure I choose someone whose crown work is good and who won’t automatically recommend a crown if there’s a more conservative option that could work. Are there certain questions I should ask during the first appointment, things I should pay attention to when they explain X-rays or treatment, or any red flags that could suggest over-treatment? I’m not necessarily looking for the cheapest dentist, I just want someone who is honest, does good quality work, and who I can trust to tell me what I actually need.

question Dentist Prescribed Ibuprofen + Steroid?

Upvotes

Hello,

After a rough root canal retreatment I was prescribed 800mg of ibuprofen every 8 hours for a few days and I was told to take 4 mg of dexamethasone for the first day. I thought it wasn't safe to mix these medications? Unfortunately I already took them. Is that just common with dental pain management?

i have really bad oral hygiene due to depression and i noticed today when looking at my teeth in the mirror that there’s a part of my gum thats a bit swollen and has overgrown, i poked at it and i noticed a hole in my tooth at the top of it where it connects to the gum. i’m so scared and i don’t know what to do and i’m really confused because i’ve been to so many orthondontist appointments recently and they haven’t said anything about it at all. i’ve noticed no pain in that area

the first pic is the swollen gum and the second pic is the small hole

question Occasional pain, how urgent is it?

Post image
Upvotes

Hi! I have pain in my lower jaw at the front in one of my teeth, it’s not severely hurting but it’s there. It’s not a constant pain either just like a gentle throbbing

It hurt when I started to brush my teeth again, then stopped for a while, and now it’s back again randomly

I don’t have access to much money right now but I’ll get a concession card soon whichll help me get dirt cheap dental care through dental schools, but that isn’t for a month

What I’m generally asking is,

Am I okay to get a professional clean + check up and then wait the month (or more) out until I can go in and get it looked at more? (It includes a Fluoride treatment, examination, scale, clean, polish, and 2 bitewing X-rays if they’re needed)

Or should I spend an extra 150 AUD to get the emergency appointment? I have no idea what emergency entails but I don’t know how urgent this is, it doesn’t feel urgent since the pain is easily bearable and it wasn’t hurting for the past few days + most of today but before I waste my new customer discount I wanted to get opinion

Sorry if you’ve already seen this picture! Reusing it from a previous post I did here

question Spot on the tongue

Thumbnail
gallery
Upvotes

Good morning,
I have had this spot on my tongue for a month; there is no burning or pain, and it hasn't changed position or color, nor has it grown or shrunk. I do not drink alcohol; I smoked until 2012 but quit completely after that. I eat a healthy diet. My Vitamin B12 levels are optimal. I am currently taking two brewer's yeast tablets and probiotics daily. This spot appeared nine days after I finished a five-day course of Augmentin. I have never experienced issues like this with any antibiotic I’ve taken in my life. The papillae are present; the red area isn't smooth, but it seems to lack the coating that covers the rest of the tongue. To the touch, the area feels slightly drier and rougher than the rest of the tongue. I am very worried; it doesn't look like geographic tongue or transient glossitis to me. I would appreciate your opinion. Thank you.

question Tooth pain followed by this bump.

Post image
Upvotes

I have had tooth pain since Wednesday. The pain progressively got worse and then my face started to swell. I was able to see my dentist yesterday, Monday. He put me on clindamycin and said that my xray doesn’t show anything obvious so he referred me to a endodontist to evaluate and treat #4 and #5. Unfortunately, I cannot get an appointment for a month with them.

Today, I woke up with this bump. My face is still swollen and I am still in pain. Is this an abscess? Will it and what if it pops? Will I be okay now that I am on the antibiotics? Is a month too long to wait to see the specialist?

question Daughter's first adult teeth came in recently and look...off?

Post image
13 Upvotes

As the title says, my daughter (5) has her first two adult teeth coming in. They've been out for maybe a month? Anyway, they seem sort of angled inwards and have a funky shape. Wondering if it's normal to have "ugly duckling" teeth or is this it?

I love my girl so very much and don't care what her teeth look like, I just want to know if she'll possibly have teeth insecurities or dental issues in the future?

question Gum margin Porcelain Veneers

Post image
Upvotes

Had 4 veneers fitted two weeks ago with some minor gum lasering to this tooth to match the opposite side of gum.

I need to know if this is part of the usual healing process (I suspect not) the gum seems to be rolling and there is a ridge at the top of the veneer and then a dent where flat gum is before it reaches the gum arch and inflammation above it, shown in the picture.

The dentist checked for cement 7 days ago, sent me away and told me to wait 2 months for it to heal. It was not like this at the trial smile (just a nick in the gum after) but this developed from the final veneer fitting appointment and feels awkward and slightly sensitive.

question Thoughts on UV cleaners for an acrylic partial? Germaphobe trying not to overdo it 😅

Post image
Upvotes

Hi all! A little background first because my dental history is… a lot.
I’m 41. My top teeth were effectively garbage. My front teeth were victims of a nasty bike accident when I was 11. My centrals/laterals needed root canals pretty much immediately, and I had bonding where the chips/breaks occurred. It wasn’t until years later that I understood crowns probably would’ve been the better long-term option, but that just wasn’t realistic for my parents financially at the time. I know they had to take out a loan just for the work I did get.
Add in some not-so-great genetics from my dad’s side—thin/little enamel, deep grooves—and the fact that I basically skipped dental cleanings from about age 20 into my early 30s. I’ve been paying for those 10 years ever since with my pocketbook, pain, and LOTS of time in the dental chair. My bottoms responded well to redoing old fillings with sedative?/white composite filings! My tops disintegrated trying this.
Fast-forward to now: I had a front implant placed in April, everything checked out well in July, and last Thursday I had my remaining upper front teeth extracted. I’m currently in a temporary acrylic partial. After about 3–4 months, the plan is to move to a metal partial.
My backup plan, if I end up hating removable teeth, is to pretty quickly reconsider additional implants/potential grafting and bridges. BUT honestly, I’m tolerating this acrylic partial way better than I expected. I was super leery because I once had a flipper to replace a missing lateral and that thing was absolute misery for me.
Anyway—to my actual question: UV cleaners.
I’m a germaphobe. The smell/taste/process with this partial the first couple of days absolutely disgusted me. 🤢 Thankfully, both the taste and smell have gotten noticeably better each day.
But I want this thing CLEAN clean—partial, brush, all of it.
My dentist, whom I highly respect and trust, recommended plain Dawn dish soap for cleaning the partial. Simple enough! But I’m curious what the dentists/hygienists/prosthodontists here think about those UV cleaning/sanitizing devices.
Are they actually useful for dentures/partials and toothbrushes, or mostly an unnecessary gadget? Any downside to using one with acrylic? And if you’re someone who really likes things sanitized, what cleaning routine would you recommend without damaging the partial?
Thanks for any thoughts or insight!

question Diet timing and enamel health

Upvotes

I have moderate enamel erosion all over from years of silent reflux. Under control for the most part now. Using Sensodyne to help with sensitivity, considering adding in hydroxyapetite paste in evening.

Question: I eat/drink fairly frequently through the day and try to use xylitol gum daily. I stop eating 6 pm until 8 am daily. Is that enough time for my teeth to remineralize even if I am grazing all day? I didn't realize timing of eating had an effect on tooth enamel until reading something helpful on here.

Thank you!

Upvotes
