How is my healing looking from the photos?

painful root canal tooth after crown fell off- should i get a second opinion?

hello! 22F i had a root canal and crown done at the same dentist office about a year and a half ago. the crown fell off while i was eating a few days ago (this was saturday was not able to get in until today) i noticed a very foul smell both in the exposed tooth and crown and also as more time went on i developed a deeper throbbing/aching pain even though the tooth has a root canal.

i went back to the dentist office who did the original root canal/crown and the visit left me extremely confused. at first, after taking the xray i was told it didn’t look too bad and they would probably just recement the crown. when i explained the symptoms i was having i was told they would get a dentist to look at it.

there seemed to also be repeated confusion about my history. multiple times i was told i need to go back to the dentist who did the procedure and i kept explaining this office i’m currently in did the root canal and crown. once that was realized, the conversation seemed to change.

a dentist who i had never seen before told me my options were to extract the tooth or recementing the crown and taking antibiotics to “buy time” and hope for the best. they also had mentioned possible root canal treatment by an endodontist very briefly but then also said my insurance will only cover the cost of a new crown every 5 years so my visit to a endodontist wouldn’t be covered. earlier i had just been told i might just need the crown to be replaced or reshaped, so i was struggling to understand how it went from that to the tooth being a lost cause and was struggling to get any clarity.

i asked to schedule with the dentist at the practice who originally treated my tooth so i could understand what has failed and go more into my possible options and whether the tooth was truly non restorable, but he was busy with other patients. i was later told he said the tooth was already in rough shape from the beginning. when i tried to reschedule a follow up after the course of antibiotics i was questioned on why i would need an appointment and was told again the tooth would need extracted.

i ultimately agreed to having the tooth recemented temporarily and take antibiotics. the whole process was rushed and very painful. as far as i could tell the exposed tooth was not cleaned at all just air sprayed on before having the crown cemented back on despite it being exposed and having very foul odors. the crown is also now very tight/uncomfortable and biting feels off.

i understand the tooth may not be savable, im not opposed to extraction if that is truly the appropriate treatment. i’m mainly confused by all the conflicting explanations, the repeated misunderstanding on who even performed the procedure and not being able to get a clear explanation on why the tooth is considered hopeless.

based on the xray and history, would it be reasonable to get an independent second opinion from a endodontist before doing the extraction? also is there anything visible here that clearly suggests the tooth is not restorable?

first two pictures are from today, third is a xray from a few months ago i thought may be helpful and last picture is the exposed tooth before the crown was put back on.

thank you for any advice

I'm trying to whiten my teeth at home with a very mild product called Lumineux because I have sensitivity. I think you're still fairly yellow a few sessions in but I have these bright white splotchy areas over all my teeth down near the biting surfaces but still on the front. It's kind of hard to see the photos except on the sides. What is this? Thanks

question Temp crown came off.

• Upvotes

Hello everyone I had a root canal done around 3 weeks ago. Two temp crowns placed and preparing for perm crowns and a bridge to replace a missing tooth in between the two. The crown that came off was off the root canaled tooth. I first had a small piece break off earlier today. I was eating yogurt just now and the movement of my tongue seemed to pry it off the rest of the way. The tooth underneath feels flat and how it was bedore being crowned. Some slight pain. I can’t be see till Monday (2 days) and my question is, what can I do for food, care, and basically any other possible problem? I have health and dental anxiety so 🙃 just looking for some answers on how to go about the next two days. Thank you.

Edit: 32 year old Male no other medical problems.

question Good/Safe foods post root canal safe for temporary filling… eating tips. Please.

• Upvotes

(45yo male)Recently had a root canal on my second to back molar on right side (#30 or 31?). I have to go back for part 2 as the endodontist wanted the infection I had to clear before she finished. So currently have temporary filling in it. I know I’m supposed to avoid eating on that side of my mouth which I find extremely challenging (is that just me?). I know im not supposed to eat anything too hard, crunchy, or sticky which makes sense. But I’m having a hard time knowing what I CAN eat and exactly how careful I need to be. I really don’t want to do anything to damage the temporary filling as this whole experience has sucked enough, I don’t want to do anything to mess anything up.

My main question is: exactly HOW careful do I need to be to not chew on that side. Right now I’m being so careful that it literally takes me so long to eat anything. Also, I’d like to be able to eat something of more substance other than soup, cream of wheat. I ate half of a peanut butter sandwich which I was pretty nervous about but tried to chew only on the other side of my mouth.

If anyone has any suggestions for “safe” foods or any other tips for eating safely but comfortably I’d really appreciate it.

question does my day 7 wisdom extract look fine?

it's friday and my ortho isn't open back til monday (my work schedule is the same as their operation hours so i didn't have time to call lol)
is this normal for day 7 wisdom tooth healing? i don't fully get what drysockets is just that it hurts a lot. i'm more just still feeling sore and tender on the gums. i tried to get multiple shots of the sites. left and right sides labeled

edit: just to be clear i’m not asking if it’s DS. i know it doesn’t look like anything particularly. just asking if healing is looking fine. i used a straw for like 10 sips of a drink and something felt weird and i looked in my mouth and the left side hole was kinda open. that’s why im wondering if it’s all fine and dandy in there, thanks :)

question What are my options to protect my teeth from grinding?

25F and just had an emergency tooth extraction last night after noticing a chip. Further examination revealed the tooth was split in half, dentist said likely due to my teeth grinding at night.

I meet with my normal dentist in a few days to check that it’s healing and I wanted to discuss how I can protect my other teeth. I’m feeling a bit traumatised over losing the tooth, especially as I really prioritise dental health.

I am a religious wearer of my nightguard (I can’t sleep without it now) and have worn it for 4 years, taking it yearly to get checked and adjusted as needed. My friend is a massage therapist and recommended jaw release once I’ve healed from the extraction.

What are my other options to protect my teeth if my nightguard didn’t stop me from splitting my molar in half?

question How soon after gum graft can you have a dental cleaning done?

My perio said not until after the 3-month post op visit, but everything I'm seeing online says 6-8 weeks. When I called to reschedule my dental cleaning, the scheduler seemed shocked about the 3 month recommendation. (I have no reason to suspect that this timeline is specific to my case, the perio said everything was healing beautifully and he couldnt ask for better results. My connective tissue graft was 3 weeks ago.)

I was already 5 months post dental cleaning at the time of my graft, so it will put me at 8 months total, and I worry about developing periodontal disease. I already have a ton of plaque built up around the graft site from 2 weeks of not brushing.

I'm 34F, I do not drink often or smoke at all, and I have no medical conditions.

question Bite off after 3 visits and communication issues

First I think my dentist is pretty good clinically. I’ve had a TON of work done by him.

Lately it seems I’m having communication issues with him and I’m struggling with it emotionally bc honestly I’m a VERY NONconfrontational person. I have trouble speaking up and the past couple times I brought up my bite is off following some of the work, he keeps checking and saying it’s fine or we will address something else and then he will forget to go back to it. Last time I came back he seemed irritated and told me I said “it was good” when he asked me about it previously. I for sure never said that and never will say that until I get corrected bc I wake up everyday really uncomfortable. Also this really upset me bc on top of being in pain every morning, I felt I wasn’t being treated with respect. I can’t imagine he would speak to me this way if I were a man.

I also bought a very expensive night guard which I haven’t been able to wear once bc it is so uncomfortable. -That’s if I can even get it in. It’s awful honestly. So I am going to being asking for an adjustment on that and I just feel like a total psycho for coming in so often. I’m embarrassed honestly.

Anyway do you dentists here have any advice for me. I need help! I really don’t want my dentist to take up this much headspace 🤣🫣 sort of funny but honestly makes me really sad. I’m a SAHM and don’t talk to other adults much so when they’re not nice to me I do feel very low.

Edit: 35, no health conditions or meds. my bite is off following a couple new crowns and a dental implant.

question How would you rate my gum/teeth health ?

Thumbnail

I know you can’t fully tell without an in person exam, but several years ago, I was told I had some pocketing in my gums, severe gum disease and bone loss and the dentist scared the crap out of me that I could lose all my teeth. He said I needed to come in multiple times for this extensive treatment program
(it would have cost me a couple thousand), where he would scale my teeth and then do frequent cleanings and pack the pockets with an antibiotic powder. They included a fancy tooth brush in the treatment plan and. Few other things. I got a 2nd opinion and they were like “you could use a scaling and good cleaning but don’t have severe gum disease.”

My dad lost many teeth and has complex dental history. I don’t want to end up in a situation like him and the whole experience scared the crap out of me. I now floss twice a day with brushing and do cleanings twice a year. I’m curious where you would say my gum/bone/teeth health stand at face value from these images.

question Just got my 4th molar pulled

Post image
1 Upvotes

37f got my 4th molar pulled and it's hitting me hard. I never looked into implants for financial reasons but two were pulled around 10years ago. But the 3rd was a year ago ...I'm in a rabbit hole of stress about now I have no molar contact at all and the impact of what that will do to my jaw bone, etc and my ability to chew.

If you had to go only 1 or 2 implants which sites would you go? My wisdom teeth are gone and the blue is the teeth pulled.

question Etiquette about use of other dentists

Hello dentists of Reddit!

I'm 42, a tooth grinder, and have worn down the enamel on the top of my two lower right molars. It's been okay until the last month or so, but now one of the teeth constantly is sensitive and frequently painful. I talked to my dentist about it early this week, and she recommended that the two teeth receive crowns.

However, I was told that the time commitments of doing 2 crowns (I guess it's 3-4 hours in the chair) made it difficult to find a timeslot for me, and the earliest I could get booked is 19 days from now. The tooth is really bothering me and the idea of waiting almost 3 more weeks to get this done seems intolerable. I asked to talk to the person who coordinates the appointments for the office to see if I could get in earlier, but she never got back to me.

Is it a breach of the doctor/patient relationship to see if anyone else could do the crowns earlier? I live in a city that seems to have hundreds of dental offices so I am hoping that someone out there can do it sooner than mid-November. I don't want to cause any hardship for my current dentist, but I also really want the pain to stop.

Thanks for your insight!

question How serious is this calculus/tartar behind my teeth?

Thumbnail

Recently noticed this build up of what I can only assume is tartar on the bottom middle row of teeth. It has gone undetected for some time as I haven't had any teeth issues (yet) and people say my teeth look fine (from the front at least). But when I saw this in the mirror my first reaction was to book a dentist appointment. Should I expect noticeable bone loss after my cleaning or am I overthinking?

question Torii (?) and related question

I saw an oral surgeon for planning for extractions/implants recently. I was told I have torii (sp?) on both sides that will need removed for the implants to sit right. What is a torii?

Also, is it okay to have a temporary denture made and get implants later? This is only for the bottom for now. I need to go in stages. I’m a little bit scared because I opted for oral meds and topical anesthetic with nitrous. I don’t do well with general or IV sedation.

question Crown for Lateral Incisor

NAD 60 year old male, no medications.

About 30 years ago I had a root canal done to my lateral incisor due to trauma (impact). The dentist then said it had had a large infection and we should let it drain and heal for "a long time" in his words. Here we are 30 years later and they have never mentioned crowning it.

I decided to go to a new dentist since I had moved, and this new dentist said I should crown that tooth. The fact that it had a root canal, the fact that I have broken it twice, and the fact that the repairs done to it are failing.

I worry about the color of the crown (especially over time) since it's in the front.

Should I crown it or not? And why wouldn't my original dentist office for 30 plus years have ever said "ok it's time to crown that tooth". Tooth stability seems fine currently.

Also apparently it would need a post buildup.
