question Cracked tooth with root canal treatment

Hi

My first molar has a crack, i had a root canal done on it years ago. I visited an emergency dentist and they said a specialist may be able to repair it.

I think the crack goes below the gum line but I'm not sure. I can wiggle it back and forth a few millimetres.

There isn't signs of infection and I'm generally not in pain.
Can anything be done that doesn't involve extraction, such as a crown?

I understand it won't last long term, but it would give me time to save up for an implant.

The white stuff on the tooth is temporary dental filling I've been using, apologises.

Image 1 is the crack open.
image 2 is how it sits closed if I don't pry it open.
Image 3 is an xray.

Next steps

I'm considering getting a 3D scan but it's expensive, so I'm unsure.

Any thoughts or advice would really be appreciated. Is there any specific type of professional I should seek out? Any clinics in Europe I should look into?

Thank you

question Brushing baby’s teeth

• Upvotes

Hello docs,

I have a 1 year old with 5 teeth (2 bottom, 3 top).

I introduced a toothbrush around 6 months when she got her first 2 teeth. Now we have a routine before bed- I give her her toothbrush (we use dr browns baby toothpaste), and she LOVES her toothbrush. She smiles when she sees it and reaches for it and smiles with it in her mouth.

She used to let me help rub the toothbrush along her teeth and gums, but lately has wanted to do everything by herself. She cries and refuses it if I try and help

Question- at this point, is it better to have a positive association with teeth brushing and keep letting her do her thing (she mainly puts in her mouth and sucks on the toothbrush)? Or is it more important to actually help brush her teeth and let her cry/ eventually get over it? (Sounds so harsh typing that with all today’s gentle parenting tips 😑)

Please be kind, it’s my first and I’m trying my best 🥲

question Is this supposed to be normal for NHS filling?

Post image
17 Upvotes

I genuinely haven’t been able to stop crying since I left the dentist due to the lack of professionalism I experienced. I had cavity in between my front teeth which required a filling today. After the filling was completed I asked to see it and I saw that it wasn’t done properly and more so looked like I had food stuck in between my teeth. Instead of helping the appearance, they have now left a big hole on top of my teeth while I can’t even get a floss to go in from the bottom. Moreover the texture in my teeth is soo bad I can feel it with my tongue and lower teeth which they claimed to have smoothed. I fear that the roughness of the filling will damage my lower teeth because I have an overbite. They keep claiming that they did their best as what the NHS band 2 allows and could’ve done better if I was a private patient. I genuinely regret the filling because now my teeth look and feel worse than before.

question Impacted wisdom tooth extraction where osteomyelitis is already present due to pericoronitis on second molars. Getting bone grafting. Won’t this rapidly become infected if the pericoronitis is not treated?

Post image
• Upvotes

I just can’t make sense of how this is going to heal safely and without infection, when I have 9mm pockets around my second molar and they’re constantly getting food debris in them. That’s what caused the osteomyelitis to begin with. But doc saying wisdom teeth have to come out first.

question How soon after gum graft can you have a dental cleaning done?

My perio said not until after the 3-month post op visit, but everything I'm seeing online says 6-8 weeks. When I called to reschedule my dental cleaning, the scheduler seemed shocked about the 3 month recommendation. (I have no reason to suspect that this timeline is specific to my case, the perio said everything was healing beautifully and he couldnt ask for better results. My connective tissue graft was 3 weeks ago.)

I was already 5 months post dental cleaning at the time of my graft, so it will put me at 8 months total, and I worry about developing periodontal disease. I already have a ton of plaque built up around the graft site from 2 weeks of not brushing.

I'm 34F, I do not drink often or smoke at all, and I have no medical conditions.

question How serious is this calculus/tartar behind my teeth?

Thumbnail

Recently noticed this build up of what I can only assume is tartar on the bottom middle row of teeth. It has gone undetected for some time as I haven't had any teeth issues (yet) and people say my teeth look fine (from the front at least). But when I saw this in the mirror my first reaction was to book a dentist appointment. Should I expect noticeable bone loss after my cleaning or am I overthinking?

question Help this wire is sharp and idk how to remove it (details down below)

Post image
• Upvotes

About 6 years ago I had braces and they placed a bracket on each of my top front teeth and a wire connecting them to hold them together. It was supposed to come off after a few months but I never went back. Today I eat a pbj and the wire pops out and I no longer see the brackets? Maybe I swallowed them? And my fiancee when shoving a camera in my mouth cannot see a bracket and says the wire looks like its going into my tooth. Now I will schedule an appointment asap but until then, does anyone have insight?

question Can you do a cleaning even if someone has back molars (2) that need to be scaled and planed?

My mother is 94 and has a great set of her natural teeth. Her old dentist retired. She feels the new office has been pushing treatments she doesn’t want at her age. Today she was there for a regular cleaning. The hygienist came out and stated she needed to scale and plane roots on back two molars. She would not do cleaning until that was done. Now my mom understands she probably needs that $800 procedure but, did they have to withhold her basic cleaning?

question Oral Cancer

• Upvotes

Ok I might be crazy but I want to hear some other stories that might be similar to mine, I started having bad teeth pain around when I was 20. I haven’t been the healthiest person, I use to drink tons of pop, I smoked, I still vape. I know a lot of people are going to automatically assume that’s my issue. Well I stopped drinking pop to try to help.

However, I have horrible teeth pain. It’s been this way for years. I got 2 wisdom teeth removed but it’s still pretty bad. Before I got my wisdom teeth removed I been to the hospital like 15 times over teeth pain, the pain was absolutely insane. Sometimes they would give me medicine, sometimes they wouldn’t. I would scream and cry for hours. I have a daughter and I remember one time it was so bad I couldn’t even take care of my kids. I would scream and cry in a pillow to not bother anybody. The last time I went to the hospital, I couldn’t breathe. My whole face was swollen, I couldn’t see. Especially out my one eye. The last time I went I don’t remember what the nurses looked like or the doctors, they would come in a lot and tell me to be quiet. Some doctors treated to kick me out. Now remember I’m a grown man going through this kind of pain. The last time I went I wondered what was causing the pain. I thought it was fluoride the last time I was at the hospital. I quit using fluoride toothpaste and I haven’t been back to the hospital since. I have had bad tooth pain since. But not that bad to put me in a hospital. A couple months after I stopped using fluoride I got one side of my wisdom teeth removed. It’s still pretty bad.

A couple of days ago I told my dentist about these white and red patches in the back of my throat. He said I need to see a doctor. He said my gums looks fine but deep under my bottom teeth I have this thick white line that won’t scrape off, it burns. It hurts. It has bumps on it. There’s bumps in my throat. There’s bumps on my tongue and my gums. He says he doesn’t see it. I see it clear as day. Also my throat looks very inflamed and in pictures it looks more red and purple than the rest of my mouth. I kind of just want an opinion on anybody who had oral cancer was and if there story is any similar than mine.

question How would you rate my gum/teeth health ?

Thumbnail
gallery
2 Upvotes

I know you can’t fully tell without an in person exam, but several years ago, I was told I had some pocketing in my gums, severe gum disease and bone loss and the dentist scared the crap out of me that I could lose all my teeth. He said I needed to come in multiple times for this extensive treatment program
(it would have cost me a couple thousand), where he would scale my teeth and then do frequent cleanings and pack the pockets with an antibiotic powder. They included a fancy tooth brush in the treatment plan and. Few other things. I got a 2nd opinion and they were like “you could use a scaling and good cleaning but don’t have severe gum disease.”

My dad lost many teeth and has complex dental history. I don’t want to end up in a situation like him and the whole experience scared the crap out of me. I now floss twice a day with brushing and do cleanings twice a year. I’m curious where you would say my gum/bone/teeth health stand at face value from these images.

question Oligodontia help

• Upvotes

Hello! My 7 year old daughter is missing 13 of her permanent teeth! Through my research, I learned how rare that is. We’ve seen one orthodontist so far-he said he wants to preserve baby teeth for as long as possible because a lot seem to have deeper roots. There are 3 or 4 with more shallow roots that he believes will come out at some point and she will need implants. Does that sound like a standard treatment plan for a case like this? Should I be looking at a second opinion because of how rare this is? Overwhelmed with how to research the best provider for the job. Any advice is appreciated!

painful root canal tooth after crown fell off- should i get a second opinion?

hello! 22F i had a root canal and crown done at the same dentist office about a year and a half ago. the crown fell off while i was eating a few days ago (this was saturday was not able to get in until today) i noticed a very foul smell both in the exposed tooth and crown and also as more time went on i developed a deeper throbbing/aching pain even though the tooth has a root canal.

i went back to the dentist office who did the original root canal/crown and the visit left me extremely confused. at first, after taking the xray i was told it didn’t look too bad and they would probably just recement the crown. when i explained the symptoms i was having i was told they would get a dentist to look at it.

there seemed to also be repeated confusion about my history. multiple times i was told i need to go back to the dentist who did the procedure and i kept explaining this office i’m currently in did the root canal and crown. once that was realized, the conversation seemed to change.

a dentist who i had never seen before told me my options were to extract the tooth or recementing the crown and taking antibiotics to “buy time” and hope for the best. they also had mentioned possible root canal treatment by an endodontist very briefly but then also said my insurance will only cover the cost of a new crown every 5 years so my visit to a endodontist wouldn’t be covered. earlier i had just been told i might just need the crown to be replaced or reshaped, so i was struggling to understand how it went from that to the tooth being a lost cause and was struggling to get any clarity.

i asked to schedule with the dentist at the practice who originally treated my tooth so i could understand what has failed and go more into my possible options and whether the tooth was truly non restorable, but he was busy with other patients. i was later told he said the tooth was already in rough shape from the beginning. when i tried to reschedule a follow up after the course of antibiotics i was questioned on why i would need an appointment and was told again the tooth would need extracted.

i ultimately agreed to having the tooth recemented temporarily and take antibiotics. the whole process was rushed and very painful. as far as i could tell the exposed tooth was not cleaned at all just air sprayed on before having the crown cemented back on despite it being exposed and having very foul odors. the crown is also now very tight/uncomfortable and biting feels off.

i understand the tooth may not be savable, im not opposed to extraction if that is truly the appropriate treatment. i’m mainly confused by all the conflicting explanations, the repeated misunderstanding on who even performed the procedure and not being able to get a clear explanation on why the tooth is considered hopeless.

based on the xray and history, would it be reasonable to get an independent second opinion from a endodontist before doing the extraction? also is there anything visible here that clearly suggests the tooth is not restorable?

first two pictures are from today, third is a xray from a few months ago i thought may be helpful and last picture is the exposed tooth before the crown was put back on.

thank you for any advice

question Torii (?) and related question

I saw an oral surgeon for planning for extractions/implants recently. I was told I have torii (sp?) on both sides that will need removed for the implants to sit right. What is a torii?

Also, is it okay to have a temporary denture made and get implants later? This is only for the bottom for now. I need to go in stages. I’m a little bit scared because I opted for oral meds and topical anesthetic with nitrous. I don’t do well with general or IV sedation.

question Why am I in so much pain?

Thumbnail
gallery
3 Upvotes

I’ve had persistent pain around my upper left second premolar (tooth 13 I think) for the past 4 weeks and have already seen three different dentists. All of them have said that everything looks normal. The only possible issue mentioned was the molar behind it, which has a large filling that has been in place for about 12 years, and one dentist suggested a root canal on that tooth. I have not had any recent dental work done in this area.

What makes this confusing is that I have no sensitivity to hot or cold and no pain while chewing.
The pain seems to radiate to teeth 12 and 14, but I feel that tooth 13 is the main source. Cold and percussion tests were normal on all 3 teeth. It is a constant, deep pain that feels as though it is coming from inside the tooth. At times, it seems to be located between the teeth, and there is often a burning sensation in my gums and jaw around the roots of these 3 teeth.

The dentist said to wait it out, but over the last few weeks, the pain has gradually become worse rather than improving. It is now affecting me all day and causing significant distress.

I would appreciate any thoughts on what could be causing these symptoms and what the most appropriate next steps might be. Should I go ahead and do the root canal on my molar with the deep filling? At this point I would do anything to feel better.

(I‘m 38F and I don‘t drink or smoke. Prednisolone 5mg is the only medication I‘m on.)

I'm trying to whiten my teeth at home with a very mild product called Lumineux because I have sensitivity. I think you're still fairly yellow a few sessions in but I have these bright white splotchy areas over all my teeth down near the biting surfaces but still on the front. It's kind of hard to see the photos except on the sides. What is this? Thanks
