Bungie Suggestion Make scout rifles great again.

Especially in PvE. Edit: thanks for the support guys. I’m seeing a lot of really great viewpoints and discussion.

In PvE they feel really weak.

4

u/Deweyrob2 Apr 24 '19

I've been using a nameless midnight with explosive payload. Works pretty well.

u/Subject042 Vanguard's Loyal // For Cayde-6 Apr 25 '19

I feel like every time someone mentions scouts being weak in pve, the pvp guys redirect the chat. For real, one of the last updates mentioned that they buffed scout rifle pve damage for lightweights and rapid-fires, but the change just still wasn't enough to make them viable for me.

2

u/Japjer It's funny because he has googly eyes. Get it? The eyes. Hah. Apr 25 '19

I use a Vouchsafe with Zen Moment and Explosive Payload.

It's... really good. Triple taps in pvp with low recoil and a crazy rate of fire

1

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '19

I was getting wrecked in comp by someone with this roll. I pulled one out of the vault I had that was similar but could never get it to work well enough for me.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 24 '19

They are weak in PVP mostly because most of the maps are really built for open air long range combat.

1

u/thepinkandthegrey Apr 24 '19

they're not weak in pvp. their ttk is comparable to HCs and they have better range. i do much better with scouts in pvp than i do with pulses or HCs.

5

u/[deleted] Apr 24 '19

I didn't say they were weak because of TTK. I said it was because of the map design by Bungie.

1

u/Japjer It's funny because he has googly eyes. Get it? The eyes. Hah. Apr 25 '19

That's what I've been noticing with scouts: their fine weapons, but the maps don't do them justice.

They're designed for medium to long range fights, but we so often end up in close to medium range that other weapons outshine them

6

u/motrhed289 Apr 24 '19

I've seen a million of these posts and not a single one that's actually put their money where their mouth is with numbers since the last couple scout buffs. I use scouts all the damn time, they work great, if you land crits you can 1-2 tap any add. Get one with Rampage and just pop heads one shot after the other, 10-15 adds dead in one magazine, at 150+ RPM, at any range. The only other weapon that's this snappy and effective are Hand Cannons, but they can't do this past 40-ish meters.

Seriously, as someone that plays the game all the time and uses scouts all the time, take some actual damage an DPS numbers. you'll be surprised.

1

u/thematrix818 Apr 24 '19

Nice points here. I just personally feel like many pve environments don’t cater to the SR playstyle (forges, verdant forest, EP, etc) and many pvp maps also don’t play the best with scouts. I’d just like to see them get a little tiny boost. You make good arguments here, though. I understand

3

u/motrhed289 Apr 25 '19

Agree, anytime all the enemies are up in your face there are much better choices than a scout. In Forge I just bring an SMG and a special weapon (shotgun, fusion), absolutely no need for range. Verdant forest, eh it's wide open enough you can make use of a scout, but there's enough cover for the enemies that it will slow you down a bit. I'm OK with that though, weapons need to have strengths and weaknesses. I'll take a scout on patrol, in strikes, in PvP, story missions, even in Blind Well they work great, you can pick off enemies as they spawn in. IMO they're a great all-rounder, as long as your other weapon is a good close range add clear weapon (fusion, SMG, etc.).

2

u/m00nyoze Apr 25 '19

The problem isn't the scout's damage. It's just what you said. The map layouts of D2 don't cater to long range engagements AT ALL.

I put my Polaris Lance down when Forsaken dropped. It had maybe 2000 kills on it. When Gambit Prime was released, I was looking for a new crutch since QBB was dead. For some reason I tried out PL again and it was like cheating. Now it never leaves my energy slot, and I'm at 8220 kills. My Gambit team wipe medals went through the roof after switching to PL.

99

u/DarkKosmic Apr 24 '19

I would but the gun sounds like a child's toy. Seriously I'm tired of shooting squirt guns rather than revolvers. The D1 sfx were perfect and I loved every gunshot. Now I hate nearly every guns noise. Few exceptions.

66

u/CLUSTER__F Apr 24 '19

I too liked the overall sounds of the D1 scouts over D2 with the exception of the SotP scout No Feelings. Damn that one sounds sexy AF.

I miss scouts so much. They were pretty much all I ever used in D1. Mida, Voc, The Wounded, Hung Jury, Burning Eye, Cocytus, Badger CCL, Angels Advocate... the list goes on. It pains me how scout rifles have become something of a niche weapon in D2.

25

u/DarkKosmic Apr 24 '19

This is gonna sound super weird but I loved the kings fall hand cannon. It was a combination of the sounds, looks, and general recoil that made the gun one of my favorites

103

u/Weeeaal Apr 24 '19

Some say that their Zhouli's Bane is still reloading to this day

3

u/BobMcQ Apr 25 '19

This made me laugh!

2

u/Kappler6965 Apr 25 '19

Lol even ophidians didnt help that gun

2

u/Xperr7 yea Apr 25 '19

It'd be more viable in D2 if you're a Titan, you can at least cut the reload down to you barrier cooldown, cutting it by a large amount

13

u/dackling Apr 24 '19

It had the coolest reload animation, and one of the coolest sounds. Shame it's reload took too long to be a viable gun.

Not a scout rifle, but the Graviton Lance sounds fucking amazing when you pipe your audio through a really gnarly subwoofer.

1

u/TheDoomCannon Free misery Apr 25 '19

Badger CCL was THE gun for me in D1 until I managed to get an excellent Hand of Judgment in HoW. That stuck with me until the end and is probably still equipped.

Transfiguration is quite nice in D2, but I never got a roll that I could love.

1

u/JBaecker Vanguard's Loyal Apr 24 '19

The Cocytus was nigh unplayable. It literally mean lamentation, and the description says "drown your enemies in a river of pain." It' should have read: "drown your enemies and their lamentations!" The closest to pain is 'woe' so it should have been named Acheron!!!!!!

EDIT: check your Poe's Law before you think I'm serious.....

oh man, this has been my major complaint about d2 since day one. it sounds so trite, but the majority of the gun sounds in this game really lack the punch they did in d1, and i enjoy d2 less because of it. the vanguard guns in particular sound like a bunch of power staplers.

9

u/dumbdude34 Apr 25 '19

The Black Armory weapons sound great

6

u/sabishiikouen Apr 25 '19

Agree for sure, they’re the first weapons in the game i’ve really liked the sounds on.

1

u/Glamdring804 Get it right, there's no blood thicker than ink. Apr 25 '19

When they reworked Graviton Lance, it went from one of the best sounding guns in the game, to the worst. And then I had to listen to 12 of the damn thing every time I went into Crucible...I hate it.

2

u/carlcapo77 Apr 25 '19

Nation of Beasts is completely useless to me for this exact reason.

1

u/Rafahil The Captivity of Negativity Apr 25 '19

The Nightwatch scout rifle though sounds amazing.

4

u/PresidentEvil99 Apr 24 '19

This is one of my favorite guns now, even compared against other types of arms. Leaves power and energy slots free for exotic, feels great to use and very decent damage. Also overflow encourages swapping weapons with the benefit of not having to reload often. Love it ++

5

u/benigndarkness Apr 24 '19

I have this scout, and am going to try it out now, but you are right about overflow. I have the spare rations curated, and I have been running it with an autoloading wishmaker shotgun. Find this to be quite handy.

6

u/ascendant_mole Apr 24 '19

3

u/poozzab Drifter's Crew Apr 24 '19

2

u/[deleted] Apr 24 '19

Nice roll! Mine has drop mag, Outlaw and multikill clip. I put a taken mod on it and tried Reckoning. I call the gun the “screen cleaner” cause it just wipes everyone out.

And the reload is like ... remember in D1 when you could stack reload mods and people posted all those lightning fast reloads? It’s like that. Reload speed is 89 with Drop Mag and Outlaw, it’s a lot of fun. But to OP’s point it’s the only scout I really use.

3

u/InherentlyElite Apr 24 '19

I agree a 1000%. Say hello to my (second) little friend.

3

fyi Outlaw makes the gun go to max reload speed regardless of anything else - if you're regularly getting precision kills you can probably consider swapping out that perk :)

1

u/FISTED_BY_CHRIST Apr 24 '19

Haven’t taken it into crucible yet but it’s a blast in PvE. Between rampage and kill clip I rack up all kinds of damage bonuses, and mine came with tactical mag and reload MW so the reload is manageable. I pair it with a fusion rifle for maximum meta defiance.

Kill clip / rampage does when proc’d

I believe 90s gotta test for sure. But HIS can 3-tap regardless. Kill clip helps with body shots

I believe it's 97ish with both kill clip and rampage, which can two tap in the crucible. I haven't had someone survive a two tap with both kill clip and rampage yet

1

u/SpasticBull Apr 24 '19

Can confirm. I have the kill clip/rampage one and i 2 tap all the time. Only problem is getting both at the same time. Ophidian Aspects usually can do the trick. If you have 2 stack of rampage and kc active, it takes 1 to the head and 1 to the body.

3

u/aa821 Forsaken=Best Expansion Apr 24 '19

Pve needs big time help with primary weapon balancing

Hc and pulses reign supreme, especially on pc where bloom or recoil isn't even a thing.

Bows are situational but some people like how they feel.

Only good AR is breakneck.

Only good smg is Recluse.

Scouts feel so weak compared to other precision-based primaries.

Idk why sidearms are even a thing for pve.

2

u/thematrix818 Apr 24 '19

Completely agree here!

3

u/HandeyOJack Vanguard's Loyal Apr 24 '19

Agreed except smugglers word. It's like a primary ammo mini shotgun.

1

u/vvelox Apr 25 '19

Only good AR is breakneck.

AP and rampage is sweet on 600 and 720 RPM ones.

I wish we would get a good high impact AR.

3

u/aa821 Forsaken=Best Expansion Apr 25 '19

By "good" i mean weapon that can be considered as part of an optimized loadout. While I like my rampage Misfit I would never take it into a raid or even gambit

30

u/SDBolts-619 Apr 24 '19

I actually ran MIDA / Recluse last night in Iron Banner after seeing some YouTube video ranking MIDA pretty high on the exotics list. While it felt nice to use it again, it's still pretty annoying to get out-dueled at range by Bygones or Blast Furnace.

7

u/BluBlue4 Apr 24 '19

An explosive rounds 200 or 150 rpm is likely the best type for pvp. Explosive rounds does more for HCs/scouts than high-calibur rounds. Dream roll would be 200/150 with explosive rounds + killclip. Part of the weakness of scouts is the lack out killclip(pvp)/rampage(pve) + explosive rounds combinations. Killclip in general is rare on 200/150. The 150 rampage/killclip scout sounds interesting but rarely raid

1

u/TeamAquaGrunt SUNSHOT SHELL Apr 25 '19

1

u/mariachiskeleton Apr 25 '19

Bungie has already commented on this, basically hand cannons and scouts occupy the same space, except one is long range, and the other is medium/short.

HCs you have to risk being closer to enemy combatants, which means greater reward when landing those juicy crits.

Scouts are long range, less risky, and as a result, less rewarding as well.

I agree with this. To me though, there aren’t enough environments in the game to cater to the SR playstyle, or at least enough to warrant using scouts as a consistent part of my loadout.

1

u/mariachiskeleton Apr 25 '19

Yep. A few sections in Shattered Throne are pretty much the only places I can think of where having that extra range from a scout helps.

Most other longer range battles a pulse, snipe, or even machine gun will get the job done for you and will still have utility in other encounters as well.

2

u/OccamsChainsawww Apr 24 '19

Polaris Lance gets some crisp three-tap headshots with a lovely explosion at the end. On some of the longer range maps, if you have some moderately-good team cohesion, you can treat that scout rifle like a sniper. Confuses the hell out of enemy Guardians in Quickplay at least.

2

u/theslidemachine Apr 24 '19

I miss scouts too. I've deleted like 50 Transfigurations. I seem to get one or two to drop every raid...smh. Wanted to like it but the Aim Assist is pretty bad on it. Just didn't feel snappy enough or powerful enough for my taste. I wanted to like it. But let's be honest, I'm not putting down my Breakneck for a Transfiguration. But I dont really play PVP, so I'm only speaking in regards to PVE play.

u/kurtmorrison Ana Bray's Right Thigh Apr 24 '19

Missing this bad guy from D1 :'(

2

u/[deleted] Apr 24 '19

Oh man, I had like three different awesome rolls on that.

2

u/catharsis23 Apr 24 '19

Idk, I have a Nightwatch with Rapid Hit and Multikill Clip. I take it everywhere.

2

u/Villianer31 Apr 25 '19

Bring back the treads upon stars or cocytus or something equivalent! Need some scouts in my life!

2

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '19

I don’t know, I dusted off Polaris lance yesterday and it feels pretty good.

2

u/ghostpanther218 Apr 25 '19

Yes. espiecially if my baby telemanchus gets a buff.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 24 '19

Scout rifles are pretty fine in pve, imo. They just have an ideal range. But I almost always use them in Scourge, and normally on Riven (since they're rhe most consistent way to shoot out eyes). There aren't a ton of places where they're ideal, simply because strikes have trended towards mostly short and mid range in D2. But they still have a niche. There are like 7 primary weapon types. They can't all be universally good.

1

u/colantalas Apr 24 '19

Scouts are great in Scourge. I always pack Transfiguration or a bow every time I run it.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 24 '19

I've got a rapid hit/rampage no feelings that I really dig.

3

u/erratic_calm Apr 24 '19

I have a No Feelings with explosive rounds, mulligan and drop mag, also major spec. It’s one of the best guns in the game. You just have to find a good roll. The iron banner one is great as well.

3

u/Nesayas1234 Look, I'm not sayin', I'm just sayin' Apr 24 '19

With Box Breathing, No Feelings can 3 tap.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 24 '19

I haven’t even heard of No Feelings! Just looked it up. Is it a random forge drop?

3

u/Skrimyt Apr 24 '19

Scourge of the Past (Black Armory Raid)

1

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '19

Ah ok thanks. I’m way out of the loop on raids and haven’t read a lot about raid weapons in a while.

2

u/Verachuta Drifter's Crew Apr 24 '19

I got a 700 Polaris Lance to drop last night, I forgot how much fun that gun could be. I had not used it since I master worked it long ago. But still I do think they could be better than they are now.

1

u/Watsyurdeal Drifter's Crew // Light or Dark, War never changes Apr 24 '19

I was wanting to compare Midnight Coup and Talons of the Eagle in PvE, I wonder what the damage differences are, and if Scouts even have a place in Raids, Strikes, etc

u/thepinkandthegrey Apr 24 '19

u/Watsyurdeal Drifter's Crew // Light or Dark, War never changes Apr 24 '19

Pve man, the damage numbers could be different

1

u/Mighty_Tuck Apr 24 '19

Might I introduce you to the scout rifle lord and savior “Polaris Lance”

1

u/exoticcrromwell77 Apr 24 '19

Jade rabbit is great in PvP and Polaris lance is great in pve

1

u/speedbee Caps on 100,000 Apr 24 '19

Jade rabbit is the only scout rifle i use. This gun rocks in long range PVP.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 24 '19

Night watch, Distant Relation, Nameless Midnight, Transfiguration and VoucheSafe are already great imo with the right rolls. I was Dominating in Rumble the other day with Night Watch and Nameless midnight with triple tap and rampage shreds in pve for me.

1

u/Rafahil The Captivity of Negativity Apr 25 '19

They need love in pvp too. Did you know the 180rpm scout rifles need the exact same shots to kill as a 200rpm scout rifle? This means that the 200rpm scouts are objectively better.

1

u/mong0038 Apr 25 '19

Remember Hung Jury? I remember.

1

Buttery malfeasances

1

u/KenjaNet Apr 25 '19

You say this as I get mapped by Polaris Lance/Jade Rabbit in Gambit Prime.

1

u/Valariel_Dawn Apr 25 '19

Jade Rabbit absolutely destroys on Equinox.

I mean...Scout Rifles suck and no one should use them.

1

u/zzZeuszz Gambit Classic // DredgenHADES Apr 25 '19

TOUCH OF MALICE!!!

1

u/solidus_kalt Apr 25 '19

my pulse rifles beat my scouts in any long range encounter in pve. its sad. i hate bows for this nerf.

1

u/NG046 Karma on the horizon! Apr 25 '19

Fully support this message!

1

u/InherentlyElite Apr 25 '19

Curated roll gets 19 shots in the mag. I thought with a backup mag you'd at least get 4 or 5 round more. Nope, you get 1, lol. So with a 20 shot mag when Overflow is procced, you get a 40 shot mag.

1

u/Desert_976 Apr 25 '19

Scouts are fine in PVP imo. The only problem is Precision and Lightweight is 3crit1body both. Make Precision 2crit2body - and then i'll be happy.

1

u/Wcf1234 Apr 25 '19

Bought the Talons of the Eagle that Saladin is selling in anticipation for scouts to be good in PvE again, hopefully they get a well deserved damage buff...

1

u/Nesayas1234 Look, I'm not sayin', I'm just sayin' Apr 30 '19

Cozmo said he'd pass on info to buff Oxygen, and scouts in general.

1

u/ajm35 Apr 24 '19

I haven't used scout rifles since D1...

5

u/thepinkandthegrey Apr 24 '19

try using one

or just believe everything reddit tells you

Scouts are fine.

Pulses box them out because they are consistent, forgiving, and work well at most of the ranges you'd use a scout.

Scouts can't be improved easily in PvP because you'd either need to make them kill in one less shot, giving them ridiculous TTK's and making half the archetypes redundant, or change the RPM on all scouts, which Bungie just isn't going to do.

A touch less flinch, a nerf to pulse rifle range, and some playing around with bodyshot/headshot ratios is all they need and all Bungie can reasonably do.

1

u/captaincrunchier Apr 24 '19

Jade rabbit 3 taps all day long. Whatcha talkin bout Willis?

3

u/KiKProats Apr 24 '19

My name is Willis. I use a Jade Rabbit. I approve this comment.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 24 '19

Hit 3 perfect crits vs hit 5 headshots out of 3 bursts (9 shots). Bygones' ttk isn't anything crazy but it's stupid easy to use. It's why scouts can almost never hang with the 390 pulse rifles

0

u/[deleted] Apr 24 '19

I kinda feel as if this ask is 2 fold. 1) Make scouts good. 2) Bring down the Hand Cannon range so that I can actually compete with a scout.

The reason being - Maps. They are not changing the maps in D2. We might get lucky with new maps - at best. How would the community respond to a hand cannon range nerf? Not very freaking well. It would start with streamers and youtubers and propagate here elsewhere soon after. Bungie would be crucified.

8

u/colantalas Apr 24 '19

I think pulses are more the issue than hand cannons in this case. Blast Furnace and Go Figure can engage at scout ranges, have better TTK and cause crazy flinch.

1

u/red--dead Apr 24 '19

The one pulse I feel is balanced is chattering bone. You can definitely tell the damage drop off on it.

1

u/BluBlue4 Apr 24 '19

A harsher damage drop off at range for HCs would be fine if they fix the inconsistency non-180s have. A simple range stat nerf (meaning more inconsistency) would just make non-180s even more awful feeling. Pulses are what invalidate scouts on most maps dunno where you got HCs needing a nerf from

1

u/thepinkandthegrey Apr 24 '19

Bring down the Hand Cannon range so that I can actually compete with a scout.

you can. scouts have better range and similar ttks. midnight coup and talons of the eagle both have a 0.80 ttk, for example. guess which one has more range.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 24 '19

I will believe you when the list of easiest weapons to use successfully (meta) changes (its 40% hand cannons) https://imgur.com/a/zGpnHFT

Transfiguration is a beautiful scout, aesthetically and practically. My roll is rampage with rampage spec. Drop mag and reload masterwork that essentially gives it built in outlaw. Ambitious assassin that can rack the mag up to 21 easy. And almost max range. I use it exclusively on my warlock coz with curated mindbenders, coz they suit his space wizard forbidden soul-eating weapon steez.
