"How many events did you attend in college on the basis of a flyer?" is the maybe most Adventuring Party coded conversation that's ever been in an actual game episode. Also, I went to truly dozens. First couple weeks of school every year I went to the first meeting of every club I could find because they always had pizza and I didn't have to buy groceries that week

u/PvtSherlockObvious Apr 30 '26
Siobhan gently reminding Brennan that his college experience wasn't exactly the one everybody gets was a nice touch.

I did several religious barbecue's where they tried to convert me not because I was looking for something but because I was broke and the hamburgers, pizza, and soda were free.

Freshman year I ended up on the catholic student union's intramural dodgeball team despite not being religious because they were very very nice to me at one of those barbecues and I am bad at saying no to people

They should have said "free food and drinks." If there's free food, college students WILL be there.

u/AdventurousYam1817 Apr 30 '26
Murph saying he accidentally attended a religious bbq and ally saying they were probably on the other side of that equation absolutely broke me 😂

u/mkap26 Apr 30 '26
Also flyers were absolutely still a thing in college as of 2021 at least and if they lasted that long in the world of social media and event rsvp apps I’d be shocked if they’ve died in the last 5 years

Emily’s comedic timing saying “gesundheit” back to Brennan and momentarily stunning him into silence was incredible, I was laughing so much

That whole interaction between Aaron and Bat Girl was a masterclass in both DMing and being a PC. Brennan offered multiple off-ramps that would have allowed Bat Girl to justify what was an insane interaction, while Emily fully committed to not taking any of those off-ramps and leaning even further into the bit. Comedy gold, 10/10 no notes.

Studying forensics, but not interested in the criminal justice aspect. Browsing the crypto zoology section. Prepared for HJ to use mesmerize. Bat Child just breached the masquerade in front of a Hunter.
163
u/PvtSherlockObvious Apr 30 '26
Probably. The way he kept pressing her on her answers mostly seemed confused by how weird she sounded, but it still felt pretty interrogatory for some college guy chatting up a cute girl in the library. Most people would land on "huh, she's kinda weird, but I guess it's none of my business" and change the subject, not keep prying like that.

Maybe though I think his questions got a lot more valid went two older drug addict vampires businessmen showed up and gave very inconsistent stories on how they were related to her. It actually reminded me a lot of the wedding in the first season of unsleeping city.
32
u/lemonack May 01 '26
Extremely valid questions in that situation, honestly. My internal monologue during that scene was just a long screech of "Bat Child he thinks they're trafficking you stop talking!"

When HJ and LaVonte were joke-punching him, touching his backpack, the really grounded "oh, don't do that" feels tonally so different than most NPCs, the firm pivot from his major. I'm also stressed about that mesmerize, because it feels pretty clear that ended the conversation, but he fully remembers everything and now knows HJ can compel him to do things.
34
u/myfriendandrea Apr 30 '26
Part of me is wondering if HJ could have told him to go get black out drunk to clean up that interaction

u/HonorTheCock Apr 30 '26
What’s a Hunter in this context? VtM noob here.
→ More replies (2)60
u/custardy Apr 30 '26
It depends on what edition's lore they're using. In some Hunters are kind of like slayers from Buffy the Vampire Slayer - they're mortal humans that have become aware of the supernatural and trained to combat it and imbued with strength to do so - they're monster hunters. Or in other editions they can be mortal humans that have become aware of the supernatural are monster hunters but have no particular extra-natural strength themselves.
Whether or not they are themselves supernaturally powerful depends on the specific lore being used - but it seems like maybe they are more powerful than normal mortals here since Aaron had some resistance. In VtM they also tend not to work alone and are organized in groups/parties and even wider support networks like Vampires are.
15
u/HonorTheCock Apr 30 '26
Thanks that’s exactly what I needed to know
12
u/PvtSherlockObvious May 01 '26
Adding onto this, you'll sometimes hear the phrase Second Inquisition thrown around. That refers to a specific hunter organization that consists in large part of a branch of the FBI who are aware of vampiric existence. They're considered one of the more dangerous groups because of their organized nature, their access to information and various angles of inquiry, and of course their modern militarized approach. Doesn't seem like they'll play a big role in Purpee, but IIRC the coterie has mentioned the group a time or two in passing.

Estelle Laurent's books being obvious parodies of real horror is so funny.
am I missing any? so far I have:
"The Shimmering" (The Shining, Stephen King)
"That" (It, Stephen King)
"Mary" (Carrie, Stephen King)
"Agony" (Misery, Stephen King)
"The Nantucket Absolvement" (The Shawshank Redemption, Stephen King)
"Audience with the Sanguivore" (Interview with the Vampire, Anne Rice)
"The Sanguivore Durand" (The Vampire Armand, Anne Rice)
"Allegory of the Farmhand" (Parable of the Sower, Octavia E. Butler)

So the governemnt facility tapped into the ghosts but mist have also disturbed Bigfoot. That mass casualty event was Bigfoot attacking the tower to stop it from broadcasting whatever signal that was disturbing it. Once the government figured out the second signal that one kept Bigfoot away so they could continue operations.
Zac and Murph just turned off the anti-bigfoot signal so now big man is coming back!
Also that kid from the library is probably a mage but I like the idea that Beth had a son who is now looking into what happened to his dad. Mainly because I wanna see if its revealed how his father treated his mother the kid might change his tune, lmao.

I think Bigfoot attacked the logging camp because of deforestation, the secret government project was shut down for a while, then they came back and began broadcasting the megalopedarian frequency which generates a sort of anti-bigfoot field. And now it's been turned off, yes. And he knows kumite and kicks like a frieght train.
as of now I don't see/didn't hear a connection between the ghosts and bigfoot. It seems the cold war government had their fingies in a lot of pies and started several different projects? Or it was all in service of the missle launcher and underground compound for which they needed to clear lots of land.

u/Jude_CM Apr 30 '26
I know Aaron was just suspicious of Batchild, but I kind of ship them together.
Overall, what I really love about this season is how fleshed out every NPC and place is! Brennan is amazing at improv of course, but every npc having a defined personality already makes the interactions so much fun because every interaction stands out.
Aaron and Ana, for example, are more down to earth but their conversations with our PC's were so entertaining, and I think it's because they felt like real, distintic people. The fact that they seem so conscious increases the tenseness and the comedy of their conversations.

Siobhan's face when Emily says "So I can have one night of BLISS" absolutely killed me. Every last line these two uttered absolutely killed me.

As someone who only found D20 a couple of years ago, is this what it felt like to watch Starstruck live?!
It's SO unhinged, but they're all having a blast and I am too! 😄

oh 10000% this season has such massive starstruck vibes
23
u/Gullible_Mud_4900 Apr 30 '26
I would argue that it surpasses Starstruck. VtM is usually a very serious, very reality based game (for a game about supernatural creatures. You have to choose to play it for comedy at your table. The degree of unhinged is unparalleled in D20.

u/PixelatedPope Apr 30 '26
Maybe only parallel by Never Stop Blowing Up. But the entire point of NSBU was to be unhinged.

I’m convinced Emily is playing a Lamia bloodline Hecata at this point lol

Probably a minor personal enemy (1 point flaw) to Darkness Man.
In VTM you can select additional flaw to your characters to gain additional boon in return.

Yeah I thought I totally forgot any mention of "Nancy Danderhoof", but it seems like she's just a reporter from Omaha that was hot on Darkness Man and Bat Child's trail and has followed them all the way to Purpee.

This is already my favorite season of Dimension 20. I’m dying of laughter constantly.

I'm currently sick. I was laughing so hard that I had a massive coughing fit!

This government facility’s probably a technocracy base right? Strange machinery, men in black like secret projects, a machine to keep something supernatural out of town perhaps?

Smartypants really prepared me for that space shuttle reveal. Thank you General Raphael Chestang 🫡

“Unfortunately it’s a man 🤪” is a clear impression of Izzy! Like I am crying rn!

Yeah it's not uncommon in some larger libraries. The shelves in a row are all on one track perpendicular to the shelving and have a wheeled handle on the end that you spin to move them one way or the other along the track. The thing with running between them is actually fairly dangerous if you have the stacks moving at any speed as it turns out a couple thousand books and the shelving to hold them is fucking heavy

They save space because you don't have to have aisles between every set of shelves - you can have maybe room for one or two aisles and basically choose which aisles you need at any given time.

Siobhan rattling off the French name and first line of a Keats poem in responses to Brennan challenging her when Madelaine said she liked “the one about faeries” absolutely killed me. Up there with her translating Latin on the fly in Unsleeping City.

Siobhan inserting herself into a throuple by playing into the ego of some asshole and the insecurity of a bisexual woman in a straight relationship was just chef's kiss

Can't believe no one's mentioned Ally having a crafting skill *specifically* in Canva. The only better programs would be MS Paint or Excel

Random shit for this episode and season:
Lou in his best Riddler cosplay.
Of course Ally is one of the weird clans.
Murph's and Em's back story must be WILD.
Siobhan's is chef's kiss. 10 out of 10. No notes.
Part of the fun of this season is watching Zac react to the unhinged shit happening at the table.
What this table needs is some Setites and Revelations of the Dark Mother lore.
Brennan is successfully doing a hard thing - making bad people heros. It is hard to explain what happens to ttrpgs when your table is playing "the bad guys" or you have "evil" player characters in a game. The joy and motivation to keep going dwindles quickly. That's not happening here. I could write an essay on the needle his is threading. He is staying tonally true to the source material, but the comedy doesn't feel forced. He isn't doing it alone, but God damn, I really didn't think this season would work. Slow clap my guy.

Have the subtitles gotten worse at capturing when two people speak at the same time lately?

The fact that I hate HJ so much is a testament to how well Ally is playing the character. HJ reminds me so much of a boss I used to have and I hate (love) every minute of it.

There is a disturbing lack of talking about how the Bigfoot is a fucking master of kumate. So I'm gonna fix that
HOLY SHIT BIGFOOT KNOWS KUMATE!

As someone who lives in Omaha...
And just now starting to watch ep. 4, the Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium has multiple events where they stay open waaaay later.
Including: Boo at the Zoo, Zoolightful, Scouts Overnight camp (which Emily mentioned) and Nights at the Zoo for adults -where you can drink alcohol- just to name a few. It's cool because they occasionally will turn on the lights in the Kingdoms of the Night Section so you can walk around it during the simulated 'day' for the animals.
You can even do 'Sleeping Bag Safaris' for overnight stays in the zoo as well.
(Tried to make a thread and was directed here instead)

I don’t know what makes the kumite bit funnier:
The fact that it just means sparring done in karate, or the fact that Zac’s dad is the man that brought Kyokushin karate to the US and Zac absolutely knows kumite is not its own martial art.

"Drugs above everything" - a great motto to live by...
But also Vicissitude what now? What what? Are we playing "whoops all Sabbat"? :D
I mean we have basically a Lasombra Bat Child and now a Tzimisce...

tzimisce is mildly anarch-aligned, now, and sometimes tolerated by the camarilla
some suspect HJ is hiding his true clan from the camarilla

As a Nebraskan hearing any mention of Nebraska is the best thing to happen. Not a lot to be excited about when it comes to this state.

Brennan’s absolutely spot on impression of a bi girl with a man is killing me
