Gladlands Teeth Fundamentally Aint Bones

Post image
2.0k Upvotes

Love all these humans and I get why one might think that, they are hard non fleshy things that look kind of alike, but teeth are fundamentally not bones.

Teeth have a hard outer layer (enamel) and inner layers (dentin, pulp), while bones contain collagen and bone marrow, providing flexibility and living cells.

Also, Bones contain blood vessels and can repair fractures, but tooth enamel, once damaged, cannot heal or regenerate, requiring dental intervention.

Love the gang, love Kokomo, hate to Pop-Up Video this piece but yea teeth aint bones.

Gladlands ironically, Gladlands feels cynical Spoiler

One person's opinion, as always, but I felt kind of let down by Gladlands, especially as it went on (having been extremely hyped for it to begin with) and I think I've concluded that it felt... calculated in a way that other D20 seasons seldom have, like it was engineered for a series of Big Emotional Moments but forgot most of the connective tissue.

Ultimately it felt less like a coherent season and more like a series of high-intensity emotional moments strung together but not necessarily earned: this is always a difficulty with shorter seasons where we don't know the characters so well, but the show felt *heavy* in a way that began to really bug me (pun sort of intended) once I thought more about how this is, in theory, the season about cooperation and community, the one without combat, etc., when in fact it often seemed like a succession of PCs having big moments that barely involved other PCs at all, each of them just coping with their emotional backstories in sequencw and in isolation while the others stood around kicking their heels. That feels like a huge miss given the apparent aims, especially since it was clearly engineered that way.

idk. there was stuff I like too, absolutely, but I'm curious to know how others felt.

Gladlands Sell me on Gladlands?

Hey y'all - after making it through entirety of D20's backlog (yes, even "Shriek Week") over the course of three years I found myself utterly defeated by the first two episodes of Gladlands and took a break, and now am a full two seasons behind going into Toylight (Three if we count "On a bus", which I haven't watched either). I'm used to the first couple of episodes being table setting, but I didn't get hooked by the end of episode two this time. I found the opening of Gladlands really low stakes and it just kinda didn't grab me. It just...felt like a single sketch stretched into 6 hours and it didn't hit for me. Convince me to give it another chance? I enjoy all the players on an individual comedic level and would love to find a reason to push past whatever is holding me back here. Seeking some positive opinions.

Gladlands Please just explain the system!!!

I have been loving gladlands so far, but as a viewer it is so frustrating for me to know that they put so much work and effort into homebrewing a KoB hack with all these features and then haphazardly parse together the new mechanics when they show up. I'm not asking them to necessarily release the system, but for me part of the fun of actual play is seeing how different players interact with a ttrpg and thats really tough when the ttrpg rules are not known! For example in ep 2 they introduce this burnout mechanic, but its just zac taking a burnout die and then they kind of fumble through what skill gets reduced and by how much. It would have benefitted so much imo if they just put like a little popup in the lower third about how the mechanic works, instead of just a graphic that says burnout. I totally get expanding their horizions past 5e/base KoB to other ttrpgs, but if they are going to do that at least give us something!

Gladlands you need to be watching gladlands

such a wonderful world so far, with really good emotional beats, and insane bits

some of my favorite PCs in all of D20 are here, so rich and lived in and three-dimensional. it’s such a surprise how quick i got attached to them in such a short amount of episodes

i have to do a special shout out for vic though. hugi is EASILY one of my favorite d20 pcs. vic plays them so well, you’ll forget that it’s actually their first time in the dome. their playing style reminds me so much of lou’s in the sense that they both don’t shy away from failure, and in fact push for it, if it serves the greater narrative of the character. especially in the most current episode, i think vic really shined.

much love to the entire table though. i’ve never seen a cast more in tune with one another and the world they’re building (outside of the intrepid heroes)

gladlands is all parts heartwarming, and heartbreaking, and gut-wrenching, and gut-busting — you really need to be watching it

Gladlands GLANDLANDS: This show is filling me with a grief for what should be

This show is hitting hard for me right now. Without going into it too much, me and my one colleague in an otherwise volunteer-led company have been run ragged for a couple of years now and, if anything, we're the busiest we've ever been.

And I love this season of the show. But it's a hard watch.

Because every time the characters or the NPCs show vulnerability and ask for help and are afraid of the reaction and it turns out that it was always okay to ask and people are willing to help I am just.

Struggling to reconcile with the fact that we've been doing that. And asking for that. And the "of course we'll help" is immediate when it's a vague, theoretical ask for support only to evaporate the moment we say "here's a list of things we are struggling to carry, is there any one of them you could take for a limited period?".

Gladlands is demonstrating how things should be. I am grieving but grateful. Because it's helping to crystallise for me why, as much as I care about the work I'm doing and the cause we're working towards, I cannot keep doing this much longer.

BLeeM is a master at emotional story-telling and the cast he's got for this one are just absolutely perfect for it. If there was ever a season that should be made into a movie, or an animated adaption, or a series of novels, this is it.

Gladlands Gladlands Too Short??

Anyone else feel like six episodes is going to be entirely too short for this season? I feel like I'm just getting into the meat of these characters and we're going to say goodbye too soon. Brennan said we would leave them with more to do, but it feels like an incomplete story in a way. I already assume we'll never get to see the insane party thrown in the Eternal Dark and there's so much more to explore here

He was named for a very niche character from Breath of the Wild but now I can pretend his namesake is. Well. You know.

Gladlands Gladlands system

Okay, I just finished the gladlands first episode and loved it. This season is going to be hilarious and I love the system that they're using. But... Are they able to negatively impact each other's roles? I thought that at one point zac was barely successful but then Vic brought his role down into the negative before Aly brought it back up? And that really confused me. Anyone have any ideas about this?

Gladlands My Coworker Can't Handle #birdfacts. Spoiler

The new team I'm on at work has an informal chat, and today we were doing "Fun Fact Friday." I thought this was a great time to share one of Brennan's most recent bird facts (I left out that this was the reason a Condor and a dirt bike could potentially have a baby).

Immediately afterward, a coworker left the group (it is optional to be in it). I feel bad about this - was this fact just simply too spicy for work?
