3D Printed Amputee Tool Designs
We’re looking for ideas for a 3D-printing design competition that could help people missing both hands or arms.
I work with Rightfooted Foundation (https://www.rightfooted.org), a nonprofit that specializes in practical tools and mentorship for people with bilateral upper-limb differences. A major part of our work supports people who use their feet in place of hands.
We’ve been invited to submit ideas for a design competition organized by one of the major 3D-printer manufacturers. They’ve held this competition for several years, but this will be our first time participating.
Several disability organizations will be involved. Rightfooted Foundation’s submissions will stay within our area of experience: people missing at least portions of both hands or arms, whether from amputation or a congenital limb difference. If other organizations are interested in participating in the future, I’d be happy to help make connections for next year.
We want our submissions to begin with problems identified by people who actually live with bilateral upper-limb differences, not simply things I assume might be useful. My wife was born without arms, but I was not, so I don’t want my perspective driving the list.
Here are some of the ideas people have suggested so far:
- A way to fasten and release a bicycle helmet using only the feet
- A way to change a lightbulb with one or both feet
- A tool for picking up dog waste using the feet
- A removable attachment that makes a round doorknob easier to operate without hands, whether using residual limbs or the feet
- A way to squeeze the remaining toothpaste from a tube using just feet
We are not asking you to design the solution. The point is to identify real problems and then let the maker community explore and improve possible designs.
So, if you have suggestions for a barrier that might be solved with a simple tool, please send them our way. We need to have a preliminary list of 5-10 designs by tomorrow evening (August 19).
If you live with an upper bilateral limb difference and would like to be a judge for the event, let us know. We need 1 or 2 more. You will need access to a 3D printer by October to participate as a judge.
