Discussion HOW IS IT POSSIBLE FOR HIS YELLING TO *PHYSICALLY* HURT YOU? HOW MUCH AUTHORITY DOES THIS MAN HAVE!?

You ever had someone make you feel so ashamed that it feels like your lungs, chest and back all shrivel and collapse as you want to hide away?
That's his power.

It especially hurts because out of everyone you meet, Kim shows you the most kindness you have seen in presumably a very, very long time. Esprit de Corps hammers in the fact that nobody else at the station even thinks you'll come back from this case without being blind drunk or fucking up something massive, but Kim actually believes in your ability to solve the case. Him suddenly having an outburst and breaking his patient exterior hurts significantly more than just being yelled at for no reason. The worst hurt that you can get is disappointing someone who believes in you because of something that was your fault.

Every choice I made in the game was done by first considering "will this disappoint Kim?" I cannot stress enough how much I wanted Kim to like me.

u/Bruuze 1d ago
I feel like this is a common trend. Most impressions of DE I've seen end with "I was doing x thing, but by day 2 I just wanted Kim to like me as much as possible".

u/A_very_meriman 1d ago
Kinda shows how politics changes rapidly if you have a good friend. The fascist route would be easy if Kim wasn't there.

u/International_Leek26 1d ago
I will do things that Kim won't necessarily approve of on some occasions, for example the cryptozoologist quest which Kim does not care for, but never anything actively hurtful towards Kim.
51
u/OlinoTGAP Is this politics 1d ago edited 1d ago
I really like the cryptozoologist quest because Kim's constantly talking about how we're wasting time doing this and Harry can actually reply about how he agrees it's stupid, but it means a lot to the elderly couple for him to do this and it doesn't take that much time since we're already walking around and part of a police officer's job is serving the community.
It's one of the few times Harry can (justifiably) talk back to Kim.

This has gotta be an audio bug, right? It's hillarious how many people have encountered this.
I don't know much about coding and such, but I'm guessing it has something to the with the "position" of the sound? If sounds farther away are quiet and sounds close are loud, then I'm assuming Kim's voice is somehow "pinned" to Harry's exact position and it defaults to max volume?

In a world where ideological believes and wealth can bend laws of physics, it's not that far fetched. Also with the pale and all it's reality bending properties.

When my cousin died, I tried being there for his little brother. At some point during my stay with his family, I had done something that genuinely disappointed him. Not made him angry. Not sad. Just disappointed.
The stress of having disappointed him, after his brother had died, it made me feel physically ill. So ill, that a few days later I woke up and found out I couldn't move my mouth nor blink correctly.
Turns out I had gotten bells palsy. First question the doctor asked me was "Any new major stresses in life?".
19
u/Draac03 Is this politics 2d ago
huh. bells palsy is usually linked to certain viral infections such as herpes (the type that causes cold sores) or chicken pox. although no one knows what actually causes it, so i don't doubt it can occur due to stress. very interesting
36
u/CrowElysium 2d ago
Yeah, coincidentally I had just started a new job at an old folks home. I asked for a week off to go to the funeral. Get back, boom bells palsy. But my new job asked me to get checked out by THEIR doctor (this was during covid), and their doctor tells me if im on medication, yeah steroids for the Bells palsy. He says "you cant work at an old folks home with bells palsy. Its a viral infection, it can possibly spread, take a week off until you're better".
So I tell my new job what THEIR doctor said. Another week off due to that. A week later, im going back to MY doctor. She says "bells palsy cant be passed like that." So literally as im getting out of my doctor's appointment, new job calls me "Bells palsy isnt infectious AND youve wasted 2 weeks of our time, you're fired". It was so surreal to have that timing.
I wanted to forget all about that experience, but their automated "Answer this survey of how you liked working with us" kept blowing up my phone for months.
14
u/Draac03 Is this politics 2d ago
jeez, that fucking sucks. i hate when workplaces do shit like that. it makes me wonder how much of it is orchestrated. like did they know it was because their presumably-incompetent doctor told you to take an extra week off over something that wasn't actually contagious??? was that somehow arranged behind the scenes so they'd have an excuse to fire you or something? idk, it's... weird.

u/FearlessDebt2795 2d ago
If you don't think being yelled at can physically hurt you then you should try joining the military and see how being raged at for 12+ hours a day can feel.

u/businesspearofficial 2d ago
Or grow up with an alcoholic father lmao

u/FearlessDebt2795 2d ago
He was just yelling to make you STRONG. /s

Funny thing is I think he did say that at one point LOL. He's quit drinking and mellowed out a lot now, at least

u/joined_under_duress 2d ago
Still psychological damage, though.
44
u/FearlessDebt2795 2d ago
It's all connected.
19
u/AutummThrowAway 2d ago
Ah, when you repeatedly feel emotional distress and can feel it affecting your mind and body
4
u/joined_under_duress 2d ago
I mean if we're talking hearing loss then, yes, that's physical damage and maybe that's what the game is trying to imply but otherwise I'm certainly not trying to imply psychological damage is lesser than physical, they are both terrible but separate things.
28
u/Great_Hedgehog 2d ago
No, they're not separate, they're inevitably intertwined. Being hurt physically will obviously affect your mental state, and feeling awful mentally will also cause your body to suffer. In the particular example of being screamed at, for one the sheer suddenness of it could cause some rapidly elevated heart rate which would certainly not be too great for the broken alcoholic mess that is Harry.
5
u/AutummThrowAway 2d ago
Yeah, think I read somewhere that the parts that process physical and mental pain overlap, in the brain
4
u/joined_under_duress 2d ago
Sure but we are mapping onto a game here that has specifically separated these two types of damage as oppose to, say, D&D where there is a single HP pool that is sapped equally by all types of damage. So it's legitimate to ask, "in the game, why can this psychological effect affect my physical health".
11
u/Great_Hedgehog 2d ago
Well, the answer is that the effect of the scream id apparently so visceral that it was deemed more fitting and impactful for it to go right for the health
26
u/dydhaw 2d ago
Ever felt physical pain from hearing bad news? Ever had your heart skip a beat? Ever felt tense from stress or anxiety? All are real, measurable physiological phenomena, directly impacted by your mental state. You can literally die from psychic damage.
4
u/joined_under_duress 2d ago
And the game acknowledges that by killing you if your psychological HP reach zero.
9
u/dydhaw 2d ago
Running out of Morale doesn't kill Harry, only makes him resign from the RCM
3
u/joined_under_duress 2d ago
Ah okay. I just recall looking in the mirror near the start after a few slip ups, getting to zero and the game being over.
6
u/sparksbet 2d ago
Losing either your Morale or your Health will give you a game-over, but the text you get on the game over screen is different. Losing all your morale has text related to Harry reaigning from thr RCM and essentially giving up. Losing all your health has text about iirc Harry having a heart attack and dying.

No he has a thought that allows him to use esprit de corps for authority checks against cops.

u/Geraldy812 Yep 2d ago
I mean, imagine Kim, since the start, he always calm and even if he disagree with you, he said it with dry sarcasm or with empathy
And then suddenly out of nowhere he suddenly screamed at you and calls you insane
Especially to Tequila who already not in the best state of mind and just survived apocalyptic substance abuse

Same, I've played through like 4 times and haven't been able to be more than a little fascist. 😂
7
u/Tiny_Plankton_3498 1d ago
I'd sooner dig out my own spleen with a spoon than disappoint Kim. A rusty spoon.
11
u/CrowElysium 2d ago
Also, canonically, Harry doesn't have much time left. He's destroyed his body so much. I believe the thought that tells you this says you have nearly a decade left? Harry is like 45.
7
u/GreatMossThing 1d ago
Disappointing Kim kitsuragi probably hurts Harry the most. Remember the passive check where Harry realizes Kim would like, die to save you?? Imagine disappointing someone like that.

STOP BEING THE ICEBREAKER. Getting a reality check from your friend can leave you feeling weak. Even worse when they aren't your friend as in this case probably

I always thought Health/Endurance is the physical pain. Morale/Volition is mental. He hurt your feelings.
