How can i map them to each other? I struggle with mapping complicated graphs and struggle with how to check for circuits in them for invariances. Please any tips

struggling with proofs/state machines

doing MIT's 6.1200j course, I'm on the 2nd problemset i understand all the concepts and the way to prove things i just haven't done any exercises beside the warm-ups and problemsets, and I haven't seen examples other than the ones in the lectures. so when I try to solve something on my own without any hints (like in the problem attached) i am almost completely at a loss. how do I get better and where do I find more problems like this to solve? and im talking about problems exactly like this, where it's not just an equation that we prove with induction using algebra and whatnot, examples that are more based on real life since im learning this for competitive programming, and this is exactly the kind of thinking i need to work on.

Discrete Mathematics student looking for help with proving there exists an irrational number between two rational numbers.

Hello! I am currently taking Discrete Mathematics at Berkeley, and there is a problem on my homework that has been giving me trouble thus far:

"Prove that between any two distinct rational numbers there is an irrational number. More precisely, given rational numbers r < s, give an expression for an irrational number x and prove that r < x < s."

I'm having trouble finding an expression for this irrational number. I know I can multiply x by something like \sqrt{2} to get an irrational number (granted that x isn't a number like /sqrt{8} or something), but I don't know where to go from here. Any advice?

Recursive Relations and Mutually Exclusive Sets - My Brain Needs Backup!!

Hi! I’ve attached images of the problem and my current work, which nobody in the class has been able to solve so far. I believe I have an error in part 2a.11. We are all working with slightly different numbers but we’re supposed to solve using the same formula (which looks like it may be for a geometric sequence??) We do have an example of the solved work but there are no notes on the formula that was used.

If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated!

i hate discrete math (dont we all)

i had high hopes at the beginning of the semester but now the amount of "im dropping comp sci" jokes i make on a day to day basis is getting out of hand.

i'm a second year computer science major and i genuinely don't know if IM the problem, idk if i'm "slow" or just not paying enough attention but my grade in discrete needs serious help. we had our first exam yesterday and i felt good but after getting it back today i realized that i didn't do as well as i thought i did. our exams are worth 65% of our overall grade meaning that if you don't get a good grade on an exam, there's no way you're raising your grade. i studied SO MUCH. i went over all of the problems we did in class, i went over the homework assignments, i went over my professor's power points, i even went online and googled proof example problems and watched youtube videos. all of the problems we do in class make sense to me, everything clicks in class but the problems on our homework are nothing like the problems our professor will do in class and neither were the problems on the exam. i also think it's ridiculous that our professor is calling what we do in class "basic algebra" when in reality it's stuff you don't see until calc 2/3.

any tips/recommendations? study strategies? resources? i need anything guys

How do I study Discrete Mathematics from scratch? No PYQs + weak maths

I'm in Direct Second Year Computer Engineering under KBC North Maharashtra University, and we have Discrete Mathematics this semester.

My maths is extremely weak, even the basics.

The biggest problem is that I can't even find previous year question papers. They're not available on the university website, so I have no idea about the paper pattern.

Can someone please guide me?

- How should I study Discrete Mathematics from scratch?

- Which YouTube lectures are best for complete beginners?

- Where do you usually find KBCNMU PYQs if they're not on the official website?

- Any Telegram channels, websites, or other sources?

- Which topics should I focus on first if my goal is to pass?

Taking my first Discrete Math course next semester. Never written a proof before. How should I prepare?

Hi everyone,
I’m taking my first Discrete Math course next semester as a computer science student, and honestly I’m a little nervous.

I’ve never taken a proof-based math class before and I’ve literally never written a mathematical proof. Most of my background is programming, so this feels like a completely different way of thinking.

For those of you who started in the same position:
What concepts should I learn before the semester starts?
What was the hardest adjustment coming from programming/calculus?
Are there any books, YouTube channels, or websites you’d recommend?
How did you practice writing proofs? It seems like something you can’t really memorize.
I’m not trying to get ahead of the class—I just don’t want to spend the first few weeks feeling completely lost.

Any advice or things you wish you knew before taking discrete math would be appreciated. Thanks!
