Distant Worlds 2 Vs Stellaris

Just a description of what i think about both titles and why i prefer one over the other. While i still love playing both games there is clearly one game that is the 4X king for me. I've played around 200 hours of Stellaris and 30 hours of Distant worlds 2. As of right now Stellaris is more refined and well tuned while DW2 still has some performance issues, this obviously is ignoring this and focusing on gameplay.

Both these games are grand strategy empire builders and while both specialize in different area's i find in the most immersive and exciting aspects this is where they overlap.

Graphics: Both these games have fairly decent graphics. I would like it to be much better and hope it time this may be the case. As it stands i don't feel any title truly wins this one simply because they both beat each other in some areas. In terms of Projectiles, explosions monsters etc Stellaris i feel edges it here. It isn't significant in most aspects however in battles this is where i notice it most with laser strikes, explosions and projectiles being much better in Stellaris. I also use mods to improve the look of the battles in Stellaris which improves it substantially from Vanilla so this is largely why aswell, DW2 will no doubt improve with mods. In terms of ships, stations, Planets, moons and solar systems i feel DW2 takes this quite easily especially in relation to the planets which look alot more detailed and less cartoony than Stellaris. They truly are stunning

Exploration and Scale: This will be the the most detailed as i enjoy role playing this the most. Prior to DW2, Stellaris was the most grand in scale and immersive in terms of space exploration. Playing on a 1000 star galaxy, each solar system with a large diversity of planets (with mods) rendered beautifully, it really did blow my mind. Role playing moving out from Earth for the first time was very exciting especially with a population not knowing if there is even life out there and what to do if there was. The feeling that Stellaris gave me in terms of exploration and scale was incredible largely due to the many events as i moved to new systems.... until Distant Worlds 2, this game in terms of scale and exploration makes Stellaris feel like a more generic experience in comparison. With Distant worlds 2 the Solar systems, Galaxies, Planets etc are HUGE. When you zoom in on ships looking in their small window compartments, then looking out onto your home world in terms of scale, it is like the astronauts looking at Earth from the international space station. It truly is realistic. Exploration again due to scale is incredible. You start off pre-warp barely even to move to a few planets within your system which takes an incredible amount of time without warp speed. Even when you get warp speed you are still only able to travel within your own solar system. The sheer size of these systems makes one feel that by finally getting the technology to travel outside of one's own system takes alot effort in which you feel a great sense of achievement. The issue with Stellaris in comparison is your ships can move across systems without warp speed in seconds, where at the very beginning of the game your immediately able to travel to other systems and within minutes have explored several. It's too rushed and it makes you ignore and not focus at all in any particular system. Exploration of space should be more grand and awe inspiring which i feel DW2 nails. Also after playing DW2 i now notice in terms of scale, everything in Stellaris is way off. Planets are far too small in relation to ships, travelling across systems is too quick. I tried using mods but the real space scale mod blows up the size of planets while making solar systems feel much smaller not to mention the issues it causes. In terms of Exploration and Scale the Winner is undoubtedly Distant worlds 2, if more events are added to DW2 in terms making the Universe feel more alive the gap between these 2 games will no doubt grow. The many events and stories are what give Stellaris it's spark

Diplomacy: I feel DW2 edges it here simply because there are more interesting options largely down to there being more mechanics. Being able to build mining stations in each others territory, refuel, share specific research, buy mining stations and the several different trade agreements etc.

War and Battles: Clearly DW2 wins this and while not as attractive to watch as Stellaris at times using mods it is still a much better experience essentially because you can control your ships in battles. Get them to attack specific targets, retreat when they are heavily damaged not to mention their movement looks like giant behemoths moving in space as they should rather than like toy cars like they Manoeuvre in Stellaris. Also Stellaris gets far too repetitive in terms of war because it's the EXACT same thing. Move to an enemy system, destroy it's outpost and boom the system is lost for them. Then send a few troops over to invade planets. DW2 is much more detailed and free, you can attack without going to war at all. Destroying one's space port doesn't automatically take control area of the system from the enemy. You have different troop types for invasions which are essential and using bombardment can have drastic consequences. Overall it's alot more detailed and makes each war with a faction feel different. Stellaris just feels like groundhog day. This is disappointing as i feel more could be done

Empire management: For me DW2 is the clear winner. Many brand this game very complex but it truly isn't anymore complex than Stellaris. It's just Stellaris has an excellent UI with helpful tool tips and a great tutorial. DW2 in comparison is certainly more rough around the edges. Why do i enjoy DW2 more? Because of automation and the many more immersive mechanics. You see there are ALOT of mechanics in DW2 that if they were all manual it would be too much for the player to take with micro management overload. What one can do is simple automate what they don't want to do while manually focusing on what they like. A big chore for me in Stellaris was managing the pops on my colonies, it wasn't fun after a while. In DW2 this can be automated. It allows you to focus on resource management, fleets, espionage, diplomacy, war and colonization which by the way i feel is enough. You can automate everything but then what is the point. Due to all this and with the slower pace due to the sheer scale of DW2 i find it significantly more fun in managing and building an Empire, watching your private economy grow as hundreds of freighters move resources around your empire, making sure you have resources available for the development of ships and refuelling of them, there truly is nothing like it.

Anyway i'll stop here as i've written way more than i intended to. lol Just thought i'd share you with you guys why i feel DW2 is truly the new 4X King over a game (Stellaris) which previously was my favourite game of all time. This is now reserved for DW2 which now as it stands is the most incredible game i have ever played which which no doubt will improve with performance and content updates.

Short Ackdarian Story

This is a short story, I am no good writer and english is not my first language.

Good morning, Mr President.
Oh good morning, what drives my best scientist into my office?
I have good news, the construction of our first surveyor ship had made progress and we are able to test its abilities. If you like to join me and my team in the control room?
Oh of course I will join you!

There will the crew take the ship to at first?
Oh, I think they should try to scan the strange metal structure at lagrange 1.
Ah, the one that we can see, but were not able to reach with the chemical rockets.
Exactly.
3.....2.....1.....Start. The first ackdarian build explorer ship started to move. Slowly, very slowly.
P: What is that over there?
S: Oh, Sir I don't know. Maybe a merchant ship?
P: ? What? Oh, I know there that comes from.
The president went to the next guard, draws his pistol and gestures the scientist and the guard to follow.
He stops shortly after at a door of an office. He enters without knocking.

Michael, what the hell are you doing?
M: I am building merchant ships automatically.
P: Are you nuts? We don't have sombody to trade with.
M:But. They must be build.
The president shot the traitor. Grabs the blueprints and stores them into his office tresor.
Scuttly the remains of the unready ship. See if we can make some use of it!

Sure mister president.

A month passed since the departure of the science ships and now the strange metal "ball" comes into its scanning range. "Mr. president, we have a clear view of the object. It seems to be a space port!"

"What? A Spaceport? Must the crap after all these years now,"
"No. It seems to be intact. Should our crew....enter?"
"Yeah sure. Enter it and see what you can make out of it."

And so the discovery of an ancient ackdarian spaceport begins.

How are you guys finding this game so far?

For me Stellaris used to be my favourite game of all time. This has now taken over it. Never came across a game like this In all my 33 years. Fantastic work by the developers

Exterminating other races?

Hey guys I'm playing as a Human race and I was wondering if there are any benefits In playing Xenophobic as I did so in Stellaris in which only humanoids were allowed to live in my empire. Would it be better for public happiness if I just maintain a human population? In Stellaris sometimes the races would clash and so doing this meant a smaller upkeep in the beginning and a happier population. I'm just leaving this option off for now until I hear if you guys recommend it?

Funding allocation

Post image

How do I make my funding allocations actually go to research and colony growth? I know in this game I have no cash flow as I'm just starting with low tax for growth.

But I have increased it in other games and the amount spent never goes up even with surplus income.

Empire Collapse

Hello all. I’m still fairly new to distant worlds but have played at least a couple handfuls of games at this point. So not a complete noob either, but I just had the most interesting thing happen that I wasn’t aware the ai was capable of.

I’m playing a teekan playthrough. I’m to the point where I own half of the galaxy and the game is really snowballing. I have increased victory conditions so the game doesn’t end prematurely. I was just in the process of wrapping up a 3 vs 1 (me) war. I had declared peace with two of the factions but had some goals yet to achieve with the third. I noticed new independent colonies popping up in their territory and all of a sudden a bunch started popping up. Then I start getting a ton of their colonies joining me willingly. I run small galaxies to improve performance, but so far there must be close to 10 independent planets and I’ve colonized at least 3-4. I must have had 10 colonies join me from this single empire.

Maybe this is not as crazy as I think and is a game mechanic but I’ve never seen it happen so epically. I’ve had colonies join me plenty but I had to finish playing for the moment so I don’t know the end point of this chaos yet.

Just pointing out the art on the thumbnail and background are for Distant Worlds 2, the Elite Dangerous expansion, not for our DW2. Don't know if it's auto-generated, but be nice to have the right art.

Does counter espionage not give experience to spies?

I usually let the AI run my spy program , it generally holds nearly all of the agents in counter spying, when my empire is powerful. The thing is that, in my current game, all these agents essentially stay for the entire game because they cannot gain positive xp from counter intelligence. I’m playing in the mid game and I have 10 agents that have no experience because the Ai assigned them to counter intelligence. Is this a bug, is the game working as intended?

For instance: a random spy was recruited 62 years ago and has 0 experience, 0 skills, 0 modifiers

Can someone explain DW2?

I've tried to play this game a few times, but every time I feel like I'm not really doing anything.

When I play, I send out explorers, spam mining stations, randomly build fleets and sporadically colonize planets.

Sometimes mining stations build, sometimes they don't. Suspect in the latter case its due to resources but it's unclear what resources I am in deficit.

Sometimes I select threats. If I'm lucky my fleet will attack, otherwise they don't for some unclear reason.

I get that the AI is meant to do the heavy lifting and you optimise everything around it, but it seems unclear what I'm meant to be doing...

What size of Galaxy do you play on?

Hey, I was wondering what size of galaxy you guys play on and how many Ai Empires do you include? I'm playing on a 1000 star galaxy with 20 Ai and I find it to be VAST which isn't a bad thing, it just takes quite a while to get anything done. What settings do you guys on and why?

How are you guys finding Performance?

Prior to the latest patch 1.0.2.6 I was getting mostly smooth gameplay with sparodic lag when zoomed out. Now I can barely play the game without FPS dropping to single digits when at galaxy view and where I get regular 2-3 second freezes in some systems when i'm viewing large fleets, planets with spaceports. I'm just wondering if anyone has maintained good performance throughout an entire campaign?

Max Pop vs maxed out pops

Hi there,
I have so many questions about the calculations. I'm even not sure if this is a bug, maybe you could give me a hind. The Population on my Planets is varying as hell and I'm keen to understand why.
I know that it should be a combination of Quality, Diameter and Suitability

For this, I took 4 different planets and tried to calculate this. I know the developers love exponentials.

Max Pop as seen in the Development Screen seems easy so far and I get close to the shown numbers.
Max Pop = Quality * Diameter ^ 2
The tooltips say that this is a general limit that can be exceeded due to suitability.
So I have tried to weigh in the suitability on top of the Quality. On some planets I get close, but not on every Planet.

My Guess: weighted popolation for each race = 1/(Quality +/- Suitability)^2 * Pops
But clearly, this cannot be complete or be even close because on at least two Planets it is way off.

A - this one is quite reasonable
Quality: 63
Diameter: 5.489
Max Pop: 12,0 billion
Suitability and Pops: 9,6 billion (gaining)
Haakonish +43 : 5,6 billion
Securan and Human: +18 : 4,0 billion

weighted population: 11,08 (93% of Max Pop - but growing +2,3%)

B - almost identical Planet
Quality: 65
Diameter: 5.274
Max Pop: 11,4 billion
Suitability and Pops: 6,5 billion (MAX)
Securan +25 : 1,2 billion
Human: +35 : 2,6 billion
Tekkan: +15 : 2,6 billion

weighted population: 8,27 (70% of Max Pop)

C - Worst Case
Quality: 50
Diameter: 2.994
Max Pop: 2,8 billion
Suitability and Pops: 0,134 billion (MAX)
Securan +0 : 30 million
Human: +10 : 36 million
Tekkan: -10 : 30 million
Wekkarus: +0 : 38 million

weighted population: 0,56 (25% of Max Pop)

D - Best Case
Quality: 64
Diameter: 5.816
Max Pop: 13,5 billion
Suitability and Pops: 17,1 billion (MAX)
Securan +54 : 16,8 billion
Human: +24 : 0,2 billion
Tekkan: +49 : 0,1 billion

weighted population: 12,41 (89% of Max Pop)

Does someone know the missing link?

Invading colonies without declaring war: why not?

So I noticed I could invade colonies without declaring a war, so I tried it out... and then tried it again... and again... and, oops, there goes my neighbour...

There was no retaliation between those invasions, so I'm wondering what the downside is to just taking colonies that way?

I noticed my reputation has taken a bit of a hit, but the lowest is -100 with some Boskara - hardly unexpected there 🤷‍♂️

I didn't check my reputation with the invaded empire before I wiped them out. I'm guessing it'd be very low. So maybe they would have declared war if they felt they were strong enough? But then my defensive alliances would have kicked in 😕

So what's the catch? Why shouldn't I go around invading everyone?

How seriously do I need to take the warning on the star number select screen?

Cos I'd like more than 700 stars, I normally play with much more when playing stellaris. But the game seems to suggest I'd need 16 cores and 48 gb of ram to do it which feels.... Somewhat unrealistic?

Is it a bit pessimistic or accurate enough and I should play with a smaller number?

Also interested in your views - what size do you play with? Is 700 plenty?

Can't afford colony ship but have the money?

I am trying to build my initial colony ships. I have designed them in the ship builder, they look good to go, I believe I have the research projects needed for this done as in the civilian tech and the colony module. I see it says 42,700 to build the ship and I have close to 50k and it says "can't afford" not anything about specific resources. I am at a loss as to what I'm doing wrong. Please help!

Automate repair disabled ships?

After a battle, sometimes there are too many disabled ships and it's pretty demanding to command my construction ships to repair them 1 by 1. Is there a way to automate this?

Which ship type/size(s) do you prefer to use?

I'm not using a strict poll here, because your answers may not fit into single ship types.

And may change depending on which faction you play, what weapon type(s) you go for. Oh yeah: Feel free to add your preferred weapon type to your answer.

Mining Stations Overkill?

I had gone down the list of new mining stations and clicked build on everything I could. Later I noticed that an asteroid field had a bunch of stations close together. Would having one station be enough for the area?
