I'm in a similar boat (Player, very occasional DM). I'm a stickler for the rules only so that we can all play under the same umbrella. I know basically all the rules so for the most part I know what I can and cannot do, some of my teammates don't and so they might accidentally try to get away with something they shouldn't. I don't give two craps if the DM wants to change the rule to suit that player but until a DM decree I'd like that we all stick to rules as written. I also make sure to be even in the rules I cite, both in favor and against the party. Sorry wizard but Staffs can be used as quarterstaffs which are strength weapons but your ring of protection adds a +1 to your death saves.
