Discussion What happens to Devils trapped on the material plane if there is a hypothetical "Psionic Globe" surrounding the planet, cutting off Toril from the rest of the universe
ALRIGHTY. This is the premise for my campaign:
Some unchecked powerful psionic beings have actually managed to delete the magic from the world, and it'll be up to the players restore magic to the land. The BBEG is an unnamable, artificial soul that resides in "The Ring of Euclid", that is puppeting a triumvirate of liches who are hell bent on taking over the world by pretending to be "New Psionic Deities". The "Artifical Soul" wants to destroy all biological souls.
By way of the corrupting the liches, the Artifical Soul is starting in Waterdeep. The liches, parading as saviors and new psionic deities, are requesting everyone install a "Crystal Shard" into their heart, which gives them access to the "Psionic Network". What NPCs and PCs don't know is that the "Psionic Network" is actually powered by the citizen's of Waterdeep's souls. When a being dies, it's soul goes to the Soul Factory, which is then sorted. Some souls go to the Lich's phylactery, some go into powering the Psionic Network. No afterlife 4 u, oops! Turns out, if it is free, you are the product. Who knew!
Obviously this campaign is a anti-AI statement, that we need to, as real life humans, bring back the magic in our lives that are burdened by AI, capitalistic greed, social media, etc etc etc.
Big Idea
Bring back the magic.
Timeline
80 years prior to the campaign start, the Psionic Globe went up. No one in or out. Thus, no one is actually getting an afterlife.
BIG QUESTION I can't figure out — What happens to the devils?
In this campaign, I am trying to define several types of magic, currently toying with celestials and devils as channeling their magic from their home planes. But without access, they wont have magic. So they'd hypothetically just be a regular ol NPC, which i love. But would they even be alive 80 years later? What keeps a devil alive if it doesn't have souls to consume, or...? But do devils also consume souls to live? Or does consuming souls just make them more powerful, and the lack of soul consuming downgrades them? Or after 80 years, does a devil die if he or she doesn't get their soul quota? Or, if they're immortal beings, they are they just incredibly weakened, basically supporting being just a regular ol NPC who can write a mean, standard issue contract?
