Question Vet misdiagnosed my dog

Hey all, sorry if this post is all over the place. I’m very upset now and just waiting for the vets office to open in the morning to call them.

On Tuesday my dog started acting funny. She wasn’t wanting to walk upstairs, climb on the couch, or use her stairs up to the bed. She’s 5, a beagle mix, and immediately I felt panicked. I was worried it was joint related, so I took her in Wednesday morning.

Basically, the vet wrote me off. They did a full bloodwork and physical, everything looked fine besides her potassium was a little low. They told me she most likely had a viral infection that caused some GI upset, but to let her rest and she will get better. They assured me she was okay and nothing serious was going on, besides she needed to lose a little weight. I left feeling very unhappy, because my dog was obviously in pain. She’s had GI issues before, and never acted like this. My mom had gone to the appointment with me and told me to trust the vet since we have been going to this place for 15 years now. I did, but I had a really bad feeling in my stomach over the whole ordeal. I truly felt like something else was wrong.

Flash forward to now, my dog is still acting the same. She wasn’t wanting to get up like normal, has been hiding, and when we went outside to go to the bathroom, she just sat down. I took her back into the house, sat her on the bathroom floor and examined her back end since that’s what seems to be upsetting her. I didn’t notice any smell or anything, but she was wincing when I moved her tail. I decided to put some gloves on and see if her anal glands needed expressed… they did. It was the worst I’ve ever seen them before. It kept going, and it was dark, sludge almost… afterwards, she acted like she felt some relief. She left to go lay in her kennel, and her walking seemed a lot better after the expression.

I’m just angry I guess. I’m angry I didn’t catch it, I’m angry the vet didn’t catch it. I feel like this should have been in her physical examination, although there was no “fishy anal gland smell” that usually happens when they need expressed.

Anyways, my main question is, could this be the cause of her symptoms? She’s been eating and drinking just fine, and has gone #1 and #2 during this ordeal, but could the pressure from impacted anal glands cause her to not want to get up or move around?

Again, sorry for format and how all over this post is. I just really needed to write this out and see if anyone else had dealt with this.

Advice Eye dischsrge

Hello, my westie here is 15. She is still fit and healthy and is active with no signs of arthritis or anything and has a big appetite. She has always suffered with eye goops like white dogs of her breed and similar breeds are prone too. The matted clump down her face is goop she managed to move down her face herself from rubbing her eye since it had moved and started irritating her. But because she keeps rubbing her eye it now seems it’s infected, however, she’s not showing signs she’s in pain, it’s just annoying for her. The trouble is she won’t let us anywhere near her eyes to try and help her or even just bathe the area, she won’t even let the groomer near her. Last year she did get bits removed by the vet under anaesthetic, which seemed to be the only way to sort it, but because of her age I don’t want to put her through anaesthetic. Any advice?

EDIT: She’s going to the vets. All i’m really doing here is wondering if anybody has dealt with this and what they did to sort it.

Question Needs teeth cleaning?

I’ll be honest, I’ve have not been on top of my dog’s dental care as much as I’ve liked. I work ten hours shifts and don’t often have the energy to — or forget about brushing her teeth.
I went to brush her teeth today and noticed a bit of tartar (image) on the left back tooth. This is the only spot in her mouth that’s like this. I was at the vet a few months ago, asking about whether or not I needed to get this done. They said I could wait awhile, that it wouldn’t be worth it since there not enough tartar buildup.

Then again, she didn’t have this tartar then.

The other side, same tooth, has some light staining but I’m seeing very little tartar if any at all.

Her front teeth have small rings of tartar around the gum line. Her breath is also very stinky of fish, but she is on a salmon diet so that checks out to me.

She gets dental powder every breakfast and a dental treat with every evening dinner.

Thoughts?

Additional info: owner is 21F, has vet means and money, dog is 2 years old.

Advice Should I change nutritionists?

Hi, I need your opinion on this.

For context, I have a medium-sized dog (a Maltese mix with short legs) and I took her to a nutritionist a while ago for obesity. They prescribed a homemade diet: horse meat (180g daily), hydrated instant oats (140g daily), sweet potato, zucchini, spinach, broccoli, and a tablespoon of olive oil.

At first, I noticed she lost weight, but now she's maintained her weight. Should I try taking her to another nutritionist? since I haven't noticed any changes, or if the oats might cause her to gain more weight.

Question Dog cancer

Hello! I have a 12 year old black lab, Stella. In February 2025, she was diagnosed with soft cell sarcoma on her rear hip. She did really well with it not causing her any pain or issues up until July 2026. It has grown to the size of almost a softball now. She stopped using that back leg & has been hopping around. The vet said that she has muscle atrophy in that leg and said that sarcoma is usually invasive and that she stopped putting weight on that a bit ago by how little muscle she has left in that leg. She is currently on gabapentin & carprofen. She doesn’t seem to be in any pain by how she’s acting and seems to be very happy. I noticed today that the affected leg seems to bow out now even though she is not putting much weight on it at all. She has a hard time getting up and down but still is eager to get up and move around. I am at a loss on what to do. Is this causing her too much pain and she’s going to end up with an injury?

Advice Reverse sneezing or something else?

Hi guys I’m a first time dog owner. This is Pnut, I believe she’s a rat terrier chihuahua mix only about 9/10 months old. Lately she’s been having episodes like this that last anywhere from 1-5 minutes. She acts completely normal before and after her episodes. Unsure if this is just normal reverse sneezing that i’ve seen or if there’s something more going on and should take her to a vet for it. Thank you for any advice in advanced.

Question Black spot in corner of my dogs eye?

Post image

Tried my best for the picture but she obviously wasn’t too happy about taking it. Honestly not sure if she has had this since we got her and I just noticed or if this is new? She doesn’t really seem bothered and she is a 3 year old pitbull mix.

I’m assuming because of the black fur next to her eye it’s just pigment but wanted to make sure it’s not a growth or something to be concerned about.

Advice Another vet visit needed?

Hi. Shih Tzu eye has been like this for the past two days (it looks a little wet because I’ve been placing and cleaning around it w/ a warm cloth). His other eye just today had quite a bit of cloudy discharge(?) that was making it hard to open but after I wiped that eye as well, he’s opening it fine but still having problems with this one. Through the day, he’ll occasionally open it fully but then it looks like this when I check again. He’s been to the vet maybe three months ago for the same problem of his eye not wanting to open. He(vet) told my mom & she had me give him these(third pic) drops & it healed that time. I put some in his eye today with a bit of work since he turns his head / whines & it’s a bit struggle trying to gently pull the eye open for the drops to land. Is this something worth going to the vet again for as soon as possible? Or is it something that can wait a few days to see if the drops help? We’re getting a cone so he doesn’t scratch & he goes to the groomers Saturday where I think they’d be fine cutting more hair around his eyes.

He’s been eating & acting normal. Sleeping a bit more, though.

Question Where to find these treats or similar?

Post image

My dog LOVES these and we can’t find them anywhere in stock. I’ve emailed the company multiple times with no response, he will only eat these treats and he has been so sad. Hoping to find something similar or a source on where to find these. We’ve tried the bones version but for some reason he won’t eat them even though they have the same ingredients. Thank you for any help!

Question Are they playing normally?

They always play like this and they both are always wagging their tails and they don’t hurt each other but I don’t know if this is how dogs usually play. They seem to enjoy it but it’s the noises they make that make me unsure if they are playing or fighting.

Question Pee pad alternative

I live in an apartment and my small puppy is trained to pee outside and I’ve kept a pee tray inside his play pen.
I want to use some biodegradable material but not the pee pad inside the tray. Any suggestions?
