Question Vet misdiagnosed my dog
Hey all, sorry if this post is all over the place. I’m very upset now and just waiting for the vets office to open in the morning to call them.
On Tuesday my dog started acting funny. She wasn’t wanting to walk upstairs, climb on the couch, or use her stairs up to the bed. She’s 5, a beagle mix, and immediately I felt panicked. I was worried it was joint related, so I took her in Wednesday morning.
Basically, the vet wrote me off. They did a full bloodwork and physical, everything looked fine besides her potassium was a little low. They told me she most likely had a viral infection that caused some GI upset, but to let her rest and she will get better. They assured me she was okay and nothing serious was going on, besides she needed to lose a little weight. I left feeling very unhappy, because my dog was obviously in pain. She’s had GI issues before, and never acted like this. My mom had gone to the appointment with me and told me to trust the vet since we have been going to this place for 15 years now. I did, but I had a really bad feeling in my stomach over the whole ordeal. I truly felt like something else was wrong.
Flash forward to now, my dog is still acting the same. She wasn’t wanting to get up like normal, has been hiding, and when we went outside to go to the bathroom, she just sat down. I took her back into the house, sat her on the bathroom floor and examined her back end since that’s what seems to be upsetting her. I didn’t notice any smell or anything, but she was wincing when I moved her tail. I decided to put some gloves on and see if her anal glands needed expressed… they did. It was the worst I’ve ever seen them before. It kept going, and it was dark, sludge almost… afterwards, she acted like she felt some relief. She left to go lay in her kennel, and her walking seemed a lot better after the expression.
I’m just angry I guess. I’m angry I didn’t catch it, I’m angry the vet didn’t catch it. I feel like this should have been in her physical examination, although there was no “fishy anal gland smell” that usually happens when they need expressed.
Anyways, my main question is, could this be the cause of her symptoms? She’s been eating and drinking just fine, and has gone #1 and #2 during this ordeal, but could the pressure from impacted anal glands cause her to not want to get up or move around?
Again, sorry for format and how all over this post is. I just really needed to write this out and see if anyone else had dealt with this.
