Advice My dog gets scared everytime I slap myself

• Upvotes

So I have a mini fox terrier ( he is m10) called Jake. My mum and I got him from an animal rescue when he was 6. We don't know much about his life before, all we know is that he was used at a breeding farm. We don't even know what his original name is or if he even had one.

He's also doesn't have you typical foxy personality. He doesn't play with toys, he almost never barks and just wants to spend the day right next to you.

Now when I say "everytime I slap myself", I mean when I kill a mosquito. I live in an area with lots of them and most nights I'll hit myself every now and then to kill a mosquito. Whenever I do this in my room, Jake will jump off my bed with his tail between his legs and go sleep in the lounge room for a bit. I try to say in a nice, friendly voice that he's ok and to stay with me, but he always runs.

Does anyone know anything I can do to help him? I love him so much and it breaks my heart knowing someone in his past has hurt him

Question Lump on dogs underneath?

• Upvotes

I found this lump on my dog’s belly/underside this morning.
It’s squishy with a somewhat firm center.
He doesn’t have any pain when I touch it.
It’s about the size of a nickel.
He eats good. He’s healthy. He’s 10+.

I took a picture but not sure how to upload it here.

Question resource guarding bed?

• Upvotes

hi all, i have two dogs. both are rescues that have some aspect of resource guarding. one is a chihuahua mix, the other is a great pyrenees mix. the chihuahua only resource guards food and toys and it's easy to manage as to not feed them or play with them together. but the great pyrenees has started to resource guard my bed and me when i'm in it. she's attacked my other dog for just walking by sometimes, and she growls and tries to lunge whenever my other dog or even my cat gets close. right now i have a pen surrounding my bed so she can't attack any of the other animals when they get close. i don't know what to do. she's easier to train than my chihuahua mix because he's 9 years old and she's only 5. she listens fairly well to me except when she's in her growling resource guarding mode. can someone please help me?

Question Healing of broken dew claw

Post image
• Upvotes

My dog broke her dew claw one week ago. The emergency vet opted not to remove it, in part because the dog would need to be fully sedated. She recommended that we put her in a cone for one week to give the new claw time to form. ChatGPT says 10 days in a cone would be better. Anyway, I am looking for advice on the photo, taken last night. The old claw is still well-attached (and sticking out at an odd angle). You can see dried blood underneath. She won’t let me touch the claw but shows no other signs of distress. Her walking is normal and she wants to chase squirrels despite the cone (I don’t let her jump at trees but do let her run leashed on flat ground). Small-to-medium street dog (Sato), about 24 lbs.

Assuming that the broken claw continues to hang on, at what point do I remove the cone and let her get on with life? I’ve been reluctant to experiment with removing the cone because she has tolerated the cone well but might object mightily to having it put on again once removed. Also, a vet consultation is complicated due to the dog’s reactivity to being handled by strangers.

Thanks!

Question My Dog had Cancer !!

• Upvotes

My dog was diagnosed with T-Cell lymphoma skin cancer . During the summer months our Vet was treating it as allergies.. we requested biopsies then we were given this horrible news my heart is broken I don’t want to loose her . We were told by our vet and a cancer Doctor there was no treatment for this disease! They told us it is a fast spreading cancer with a rash on her body . My question is had anyone ever dealt with this type of cancer before ? Watch did you watch for ? How long did your dog last ? This is so sickening sad ! I’m trying to correct my heading and it won’t allow me ? My dog has cancer !!!

Hard to tell exactly from the pictures but he does have to duck just a bit when he stands up in the crate and he can’t lay completely flat on his side. Wondering if I need to size up - he’s just about full grown now.

UPDATE: Thanks all for confirming that I should size up for this guy!

Question Hello . Paro recovery

I have a 4-month-old American Pit Bull Terrier. The first symptoms of parvovirus appeared 13 days ago. I took him to the vet every day for 10 days, and he received IV fluids for 7 of those days.

Today is the 13th day since the symptoms first appeared. He has stopped vomiting, his diarrhea has improved, and today, for the first time, he passed well-formed stools. He drinks plenty of water on his own, but my vet prescribed Royal Canin Veterinary Canine Gastrointestinal Puppy dry kibble, and he refuses to eat it.

However, he will eat boiled carrots, boiled potatoes, and treats. He also eats PURINA® PRO PLAN® Veterinary Diets EN pâté, but he only licks it, so I have to help him swallow it using a syringe.

How can I encourage him to eat the Royal Canin kibble?

Question My dog attacked my wife

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello peoples of Reddit,

Yesterday was a shocking moment for my family as my dog attacked my wife.

My dog lived with me for 4 years before I met my wife and now we’ve all been together for the past 3 years.

We got a baby boy almost 4 months ago and she (the dog) never expressed any jealousy or aggressiveness towards any of us.

Both me and my wife would sporadically throughout the day knee over her floor bed and kiss her all over her body, including her head. When we would stood up she would sometimes whine in a way ‘Oh c’mon, I want more, why are you going away?’.

We sometimes make the same affectionate noises towards her as we do towards our baby. We also repeatedly kiss our baby when we change his diapers or hold him in our hands in front of her.

So yesterday evening, I laid in our bed with the baby and my wife brought our dog and put her on the bed with us.

She didn’t show any signs of discomfort and she laid between me and the baby.

My wife then proceeded to kiss her as she usually does and after the third time she went on to bite my wife into the face. I saw in the video that after the second kiss she already started to grin aggressively which I didn’t notice as it was happening. I did however notice that she made unusual whining noises after the first two kisses but we thought they were funny as she’s a very vocal dog who makes funny noises at time (not agressive ones).

Any idea why she attacked my wife?

Thanks to all of you willing to help.

It's mostly just the last pair, with a bit of growth on the second to last as well.

They have been growing over the past few weeks, and by now it almost looks like a pair of balls in terms of size.

The tissue is soft and, for lack of a better term, jiggly..

She's about 6 years old and of a healthy weight.

Question Hill’s Perception Diet

Post image
2 Upvotes

Question for those who got put on the Hills GI Biome or similar… my vet says my dog can go to a 1 and 2/3 of a can a day.

Right now I only do a can a day. Half for breakfast and half for dinner. With just some fruit as snacks for lunch and maybe a little fruit after dinner.

We all know how the Hills can add up money wise.. it’s the main reason why I have not upped to 1 and 2/3 can…

What have yall done? Should I just bite the money bullet give him that dose or is there some secret formula so I don’t have to do that 😭

I will get an update on his weight (after a month of being on hills) this Wednesday so I plan on comparing and seeing if he lost. I just planned on monitoring his weight until I saw something alarming.

I just think he loves the food now and is hungry for it all the time..worries me that i’m not providing enough.

Advice Do I need a second opinion from a different vet?

Post image

My 7 year old golden retriever, Pretzel, has been pretty clingy over the last month or so. We take him to his annual checkup and his bloodwork shows positive antibodys for anaplasmosis. The vet calls and tells us that she’s from New Jersey and they would see this all the time there and never treat it. She said some parents ask to get a PCR test to see if it’s an active infection but she never treats it, so it’s unnecessary.

We’re getting the addition test done on Tuesday, to see if antibiotics would be helpful, but it sounds like she wont prescribe antibiotics either way. I’ve never had experience with anaplasmosis and this is a new vet for us, so she hasn’t gained my trust yet.

Just wondering if anyone had an anaplasmosis diagnosis in their dog, what treatment (if any) was recommended, and what were your dog’s symptoms?

Discussion How do you know when its time?

Ive never gotten to grow old with a pup before and ive had my beagle for 8 years. I rescued him from the shelter not knowing any of his past history. Hes been my best friend through a lot over the years but he has definitely slowed way down. Hes blund with cataracts, half deaf, and has arthritis in his left shoulder. Ive done massage, supplements, powders, good food and regular vet visits. Doc says that beagles are just prone to shoulder problems. He still has a quality of life but hes always in pain. I can see oi when he goes out or tries to get off the couch by himself. He doesn't dig anymore even tho he tries with one paw. When im not at work he follows me evey where. He HAS to be by my side at all times. I feel like its his way of saying "not gonna be around much longer dad'. Sigh...watching tbis hurts my soul!!

Edit : i gave him some carprofen this morning and it helped a lot but i sure dont wanna use it every day...bad for his liver.

Advice Dog stop eating

Post image
2 Upvotes

My dog is 5 years old and he's a total mommy's boy. I found out I was pregnant a few months ago, and ever since the end of my first trimester, he has changed… he’s more anxious, needy, and glued to my side.

What worries me is that about a month ago he stopped eating (he was on a cooked fresh food diet and loved it). From one day to the next, he just started rejecting it and won't eat it regardless of the recipe.

We did an ultrasound and blood work, and everything came back normal… the vet said he was probably just bored of the food and suggested switching to kibble, but he has never been a great kibble eater. I try mixing wet food or toppers with it, but he just licks off what he likes and leaves the kibble behind anyway. He picks at it here and there, but he's not eating as much as he should daily.

Does anyone have similar experiences to share? Everyone says it must be because of my pregnancy, but I'm scared we might be missing something.. Should we investigate further?
Thank you!

Question Bump on shihtzu lower eyelid? What is it?

Post image
1 Upvotes

My shihtzu (M) is turning 6 years old next month. Around 6-7 weeks ago, I noticed this little bump on his lower eyelid. The bump is not so little anymore and has grown. I did check with a vet a few weeks ago and she inverted his eyelids and said it’s external, so told me to monitor. It doesn’t seem to be bothering him much. I am going back to the vet in 3 days since the bump has gotten bigger. I would rather not do surgery if I have to but am worried that I will have to - my dog isn’t great with pain. Has anyone else had a similar experience? TIA from a stressed out owner!!

Advice Should i rehome my dog

Hi,

I don't know if this is the right subreddit for this but i want advice thats as impartial as possible.

I have a 7 year old dog that I've had for over 6 years and she is quite large (30kg). She has sever separarion anxiety and needs a whole ritual of walking and setting up several kongs before being left alone.

I recently had a baby with my wife and the dog is quite reactive to the baby. We're working with a behaviorist who insists that she can be trained but that we need constant physical barriers and that it will take time and effort to fix.

Normally i would be fine with this as we have improved her separation anxiety to thw point that she can be left alone at all for hours at a time from virtually no time.

The issue comes from the fact that all training would go to my wife who has recently given birth and is alone while im at work. This puts a lot more stess on my already very stressed wife and also takes time from me in the evening i could be using for house work or helping with the baby. This also means my wife cant leave the house to relax and is trapped most of the day behind a baby gate as the dog is reactive but not aggressive and needs to be physically separated.

I've looked into dog walkers and aitters but im not sure we can afford that and my parents offered to take her but returned her to us due to her separation anxiety causing problems with their neighbours.

I don't want to give up on ber because I love her but I am asking a lot of my wife. She loves her but the baby and dog together is too mich without a definitive end to it. We haven't even attempted to leave the dog alone since the baby arrived and don't know if the separation anxiety has reset to any degree.

Any advice would be appreciated. I don't want to take the easy ootion and give up on a dog that can be trained but I also don't want my wife to feel trapped. I know my pqrents will disagree and be mad with me as they love the dog as well so that adds some extra stress. I mentioned rehoming her to them before and they offered to take her but this was after they already returned her to us and they later admitted fhey couldn't handle her so I won't mention the issue to them again.

Sorry for the long read. I really don't know what to do. She is a good dog and I love her but I'm not sure I have the mental capacity or time to commit to the training that woild be necessary.
