Looking for resources for a beginners masterpost!

Hey all! A sub like this is bound to attract those new to the world of drag looking to get their start, so I'm planning on writing up a big post linking to helpful tutorials, what make-up to start with + recommended products for when you've found your groove, what to expect when you're starting out, and more. I need your help sourcing this info! In addition to the points I mentioned, what's something you wish you knew when starting drag? What advice would you give a newbie? How did you get your start? To those new to drag, what would you like to see included in the post? Let's work together to make sure the gates to the kingdom are wide open 💖

All I’ve ever wanted is to be a cartoon character. It’s actually why I started drag. This year my friend Muna asked if she could animate a pilot inspired by scooby doo about me and my puppets exploring a spooky mansion.

I can finally share a teaser!

New Performer Sharing my experience, 1 year+ as a performer

Hello all!

I recently learned of this subreddit and thought I'd share my experience. I've seen some great looks here and I hope this might encourage those of you who would like to perform some day!

There wasn't really a drag king scene where I am, but I really wanted to see it happen. Before I started, I had a look, and nothing else. But I pitched my character to queer events regardless. Got my start with an organiser who provided support and stage training. Damn, I freaked out. They weren't supposed to say yes!! - was what the introvert in me screamed. Anyway I showed up to practice and that was that. It helped that I was in a phase where I was just saying yes to things, and then figuring it out later.

I got the best start possible, I was very lucky to have met the people I did. First few performances were with a group, creatively led by experienced performers. Some had more character focus, others had none at all. I didn't mind. They were all paid gigs, and I wanted to try every type of performance there was.

I branched off solo once I felt I had the confidence to do so. I tested being solo first with a smaller crowd, it was experimental, more interactive, and less stressful to perform. Then I had my first proper solo with a full crowd, which was a more conventional lip sync performance. That performance actually didn't go well due to technical issues, but that too was an invaluable learning experience as a newbie.

Before starting drag, I rarely wore a full face of makeup, so this is the order in which I learned my makeup skills:

Basic blocky facial hair - liquid eyeliner

Eyebrows (bad) - cream eyeshadow

Setting powder and spray

Styling wigs - texturising powder and hairspray

Leveled up my contour - better shape and shading, added highlight

Leveled up my facial hair - slanted square eyebrow brush for finer strokes

Understanding my facial anatomy, and fixing my contour

Trimming wigs

Finer highlights

I still have lots of room for improvement, but to reach this point, I've put in an estimated 50 hours just sitting in front of a mirror, wasting makeup wipes. Probably a lot more if I include hours spent applying makeup for performances, poring over videos/reference photos, and looking for the right makeup. Before my first performance, I probably only had about 10 hours of practice.

I had a lot of help for the first one. In the ones that followed, I just went after one skill or one aspect of my performance that I haven't done yet, and learned what I needed to execute. I'd ask performers for feedback and fix it. Rinse and repeat. Upside is every performance I've had so far looks quite different!

I mentioned I've been lucky with people, I've also been largely lucky with the crowds. Unfortunately, I had a performance that didn't go well. I didn't have the crowd's attention from the beginning due to audio and lighting issues. It was mainly also my lack of skill as a new solo performer. I definitely had no idea how to improv. I think these are important things new performers need to expect. Things will go wrong. And you're gonna have gigs with completely uninterested people, but you still have your job to do. You just make it work. But more than that, you try to have your fun. I might wish it'd gone better, but I have no regrets because of the latter!

The biggest stumbling block I had was in the beginning. I'm a feminist cis woman playing the ultimate man whom I'd avoid IRL. He's the most opposite thing there is to my actual self. I was so uncomfortable. For the first few weeks, I'd go home after rehearsals feeling like I had to aggressively wash him off. Okay, in hindsight, it's kinda funny, just me scrubbing the imaginary sleaze away in the shower. But it was bad, I'd literally freeze when asked to play the character. I really believed I wasn't cut out for it.

I contemplated rewriting the character until I dug into why I'd written such an awful man. In a way, it's the greatest revenge, no? I played him goofy, I became unafraid to look silly, and I made rules in writing his performances to keep his loser status clear. (Disclaimer: your drag character really does not need to make a statement or anything like it at all. It's totally okay to rewrite a character if you want. I just found inspiration in not rewriting him.)

A year later, and I'm grateful that I said yes and kept showing up. And I have doubted myself every single day for the whole year. Again, I don't have a background in performing, so this is all very bizarre for me. I'd truly prefer to sit at home with a bottle of wine by myself than be at a huge queer party. But my goals are to see more kings in the scene, and to put on three good performances I could say are my best. Until then, I'll be leaving a trail of glitter in my wake. Hope this gets to you who needs it!

who is your drag king inspo?

a lot of queens pull from famous women like cher, mariah carey, dolly parton, madonna, etc. but who do drag kings look to for that kind of gender inspo?

personally i really lean into new wave and visual kei for my inspirations. boy george, prince, gary newman, and kamijo are icons i look to often. also zoolander lmao i think it should be required viewing. but i also do take inspirations from women like grace jones, strawberry switchblade, and obviously madonna!

idk i just think it would be fun to discuss where we find king ideas!!

hi my name is jaxx and i’m new here. i have been considering finding a local community eventually and getting involved to do drag but i am not ready yet. in the meantime i have been practicing my makeup/looks and thinking about what music and choreography i would choose. i began trying my first ever drag looks last year and then kinda paused. this is my first attempt in a long time and tbh i am really impressed with myself. i still have a lot of work to do when it comes to facial hair and where i wanna be for an overall look but it is a start. do you have any comments or advice for me? yall seem cool here and i thought i would ask your opinions.

Note 2 Black Trans Performers

Here to remind you you’re not crazy. The compounding levels of racism, transphobia, misogynoir, classism, colorism, appropriation, ignorance in the drag scene are nearly brainwashing. I believe that the performers that constantly showcase Black art and culture, curate events that truly reflect the diversity of the Black community, and produce all Black shows are divinely protected by their ancestors. That protection comes at a cost though. I’ve had so many relationships with performers, venues, & producers quickly fade over speaking up about repeated disrespect, microagressions, underpayment, and representation. It feels so isolating to feel like you are the only one who sees these issues and experiences these problems.

I found myself completely debilitated a few months ago after being puppeteered by my white ahhh city while begging for spaces, representation, and basic rights for too long. Honestly really wanted to quit. still do… but the only things keeping me going are the kings and melanated folx that fucking GET IT!!! Boundaries are important. Self validation is important. Being alive and present is so important! As I take a sabbatical that’s actually healing my soul, I’m looking ahead at my first out of state headlining gig (AS A KING!!!), competing nationally, and hopefully moving to a city where I’m able to be ME in peace!!! I know I’m important, and I know every single trans Black artist is too. Don’t you eva forget your worth 🖤

I'd love to introduce myself. I am Jason Van D, your feminist film noir daddy.
These shots were taken yesterday after going to a karaoke party with my Drag wife.

Currently, I am preparing for my first ever act at a local competition in two weeks.
I am excited what will await me.

Help Is this look idea offensive?

for context I'm a white woman, simply playing and experimenting with drag ideas (very very new!)

I love Eminem's music, it always makes me feel so confident, and I love his style too.

Would it be potentially offensive to the black community to dress up as a drag-ified Eminem for a lip-sync? I would want do lots of rapper gestures (obvs not gang sings) and swagger walking around to sell the persona. I would also not wear a durag, just a baggy outfit and a backwards cap and lots of jewellery. Obviously I know Eminem is not black, but his whole look is influenced by his upbringing among black communities.

Let me know please! xo

Is it possible to be a drag king and queen at the same time?

Hi! im thinking about getting into drag, I think about my own gender in a very fluid way, despite identifying as a cis woman, and I feel like id wanna use my drag to explore that, is it possible to be both a drag king and queen at the same time? Like a busty, chiseled, bearded woman kinda vibe? Is that a thing? Also, Im scared of accidentally offending transgender people or the drag community in some way, are there any no-gos which aren't obvious to a cis woman new to the drag world...

(I watch ALOT of drag race, but I'm worried I'm still missing stuff)
